This may sound odd... but i finally got an HDTV... GLORY.

My Blu-Rays look a thousand times better than my DVD's, and I have a fairly old LCD rear projection HDTV. Some DVD's look damn good, no question, but it's not close to a good Blu Ray. Resolution is better, contrast is better, color is better. My sony blu-ray player is hooked up via HDMI.

I wonder how much of this is player-dependent.

The Samsung 1500 was a top-rated unit when I got it; is it possible that Samsung's Blu-fu is *that* much better than their competitors'...?

I finally got an HDTV recently, too, while we were waiting for way too long for our furniture to show up.... But, it's a piece of crap. it was a good deal, until we saw two inches of backlight spilling in from all sides of the screen.

Maybe one day, I'll be able to get a nice one.... I'd love a 1080p projector actually. but, in the meantime, this laptop has a 1080p screen on it and it looks good too.

Sounds like grounds for a warranty replacement. Unless you got one of those silly screens that's designed to spill light onto the wall in all directions...

projectors are a pain, you need to be in a theatre dark room for it to look good..

my apartment has crazy amounts of sunlight...

so even the plasma can look washed out when its full bore sun blasting in through the window onto the screen and bouncing off the walls........

I think it's just a crappy t.v. :)

My verbage wasn't the best, but meaning to say the light spills in towards the center of the screen from the edges, not spills onto the wall....

Some screens are actually side-lit rather than back-lit. Cheaper to manufacture but makes a difference in quality.

Any way to disable those backlights? (I'm talking physically, not something in the menu) More annoying than doing any good. I think the light is spilling on our screen as well.

Mine is a Vizio and if you actually bring the brightness down past 90% it produces an annoying hum.

no. my sharp aquos has separate controls in the menu for backlight and brightness. does yours just have brightness?

I think it just has brightness. What a crappy cosmetic function. I tried slowly bringing the backlight down to zero and the picture gets better and clearer as the light decreases. (Watching Godfather 2 Blu Ray, which is perfect for a test of black levels)

Even when it at zero and completely off, I get a hum.

LOL @ "snipping wires". I'm ready to give it a try. :Drogar-Dum(DBG):

Which is why I went LCD, hardly notice even direct sunlight if at all.

Ive got a bravia in the lounge room and one on my edit station. To me theyre rock solid.

Anyone change their opinion of a movie because of the blu-ray? I watched Rambo: First Blood Part II, and while I always enjoyed the film on a low brow action level, I've kind of dismissed it over the years as an 80's relic. Watching the blu-ray I was surprised by how well shot it was. It really is a well put together film and top notch action flick. Who knows, with the advances in film transferring, it might never have looked this good, even when in theaters.

It's not only a visual upgrade with Blu Ray. Predator for example, the SOUND is fantastic. I think they put a lot of work into the updated version with the audio mastering. (5.1 or whatever it is) I love a film where the explosions are coming from all around the room.

i watched 5th element.... Whole new film... the art direction is insane.....

"No country" looked better on my TV than it did in the theatre....

"Full metal jacket" is a whole new experince when you can see the faces of every soldier in Kubricks famous Wide shots....

Amazing technology.

I love Blu-ray, high def and what it brings to the movie watching experience. But I would argue that sometimes it actually takes me out of the story.

I've had my High Def tv for 13 months now and I am STILL critiquing the image or saying things like "honey get in here.......check out that...now THAT is some serious High Def".

Having said that, I am still in love with it and am certainly glad I have my Blu-ray and 1080p tv.
