This could be very useful for Red...

It's a continously variable ND filter from 2-8 stops.
Designed for high MP count DSLRs like the D2x and 1DsMII it would allow us Red shooters a very useful tool in controlling exposure while maintaining DOF and other attributes in bright conditions.

Cool huh?

I suspect it's just two polarizers, given that at the bottom of the page they say "The Vari-ND can be used with most other Singh-Ray filters except Polarizers or Polarizers PLUS"

I think that's exactly what it is. Which means it could be thought of as another iris, but one that doesn't affect DOF. However, it appears that it would affect the image in the same way a polarizer would, so you'd need to be careful when shooting outdoors or your skies won't match.

I would think your skies would match if you kept it on all the time. I just did a test, holding up two polarizers and rotating one. It appeared that the polarizing effect of the first one was not altered as the second rotated. Reflection cancellation, and cloud contrast remained the same.

I think if you pan across the sky, the colors would change because the light would be coming from different angles (assuming the sun is not directly overhead).

According to the literature you only get color shifts past the effective 8 stop range.

surely I'm not at the cinematographer side but.. you know..

me would like to know.. will it work being coupled to the regular (36x24mm full frame size) still lenses (non DSLR) too?
