Third-Party Developers

Besides thinking about becoming beta testers, some of us should be thinking about signing up as third-party developers. Jim has said that the concept behind Red is inclusive, not exclusive. He has built the ultimate modular camera and I think that means that other companies will be building some of the modules, and not just French flags, matte boxes, follow focus systems, and lenses.

I’m thinking about awesome third-party cages, storage systems, special mini jibs (that work with the modular design and cage system), etc. Some of these third-party add ons may help to keep the prices down for those who can’t afford much more than the main camera but need at least some cheep modules to be able to use it. And some of these third-party modules may cost as much as the camera. I hope this is one of the things Jim means when he says he wants Red to be inclusive.

I do believe the lens mount should be interchangeable on RED from what I understand so the first order of business should be a Nikon F-mount.

It sure does look promising; check out the front of the camera. It sure looks like the whole front is interchangable - or maybe the lens-mount itself can be detached?

Imagine a chrome finished mattebox. I hope Jim has one in the works... a black mattebox would clash style-wise. With that being said, a chrome red lens would have been cool.

Nikon F and Canon FD mount.

What I would really like to see, and you're all going to laugh... is a Guerilla35 or Micro35 hooked up to the RED when it's done for some comparison shooting in HD. Obviously they wouldn't be sharp enough for 2k or higher, but those little adapters offer more than just DOF and I would be curious to see if they would be a positive addition.

lol. yeah, and then MTV will have a "pimp my RED" hosted by Arnold Shwarznegger (however you spell it).

I think I need to get a platinum ice grill to coordinate with this camera.

huh? What for? Specular reflections in the lenses? More flares that the scene actually has? No thanks. I'll take my mattebox black, and while we're at it...

"Does the camera come in black?" :)

oops, didn't think about the reflections. I was too preoccupied by how dazzzling the RED camera looks. I change my comment to.. non reflective- finish that matches the RED.

imagine running through the street capturing footage... people would probably flee thinking you are some maniac about to shoot them with a photon beam.

hehehe, that's actually what I'm afraid of...

Someone will have to create non-weapon looking cages just to avoid this problem.

Yes, I am going to laugh. Why the !@#!%^ would you want to degrade the image with something like a Guerilla35 or Micro35 on a camera like this? That would be like taking one of those adapters and putting it on an Arri or Panavision. Why? What is the point? You've got all the DOF options you could want and I don't see how they could 'add' anything to the image aside from distortion. Sorry, I don't mean to be rude but that just seemed crazy to me.

You don't need a 35mm adapter for a camera that takes 35mm lenses and has a super-35 sized sensor.

Yeah in this solution RED makes already 35mm adapters work. Think about what gives You shDOF - large projection surface. Most 35mm adapters using 18x24 or 24x36. RED uses 24x36. So...
