Thinking about selling 5D and lenses and buying 60D

No only the pointless ones such as this..... I have never met one professional videographer wanting to switch his camera for a lesser one. Especially when something like this is so cheap. It's like you deciding on what Home to buy or something? If you properly know how to use a 5d and shoot great footage then why would you ever want anything else that would not be as good or better?

I've known a fair number of videographers who have decided to switch to a "lower end" version of their camera to save a little cash and perhaps get some more supporting gear. No different than people who went from the HVX to the HMC so as not to keep dealing with the frustration of shooting on P2. I'm not saying I know what the "right" choice is but, for videography, I certainly understand his delema. I personally wasn't ready to take the plunge to HDSLR territory until we cameras like the 60D with articulated LCD screens and manual audio control came out. I don't know what I would do if I already had a 5Dii like the TC does. However, if I had a spare $3,000 to blow on whatever I wanted; I'd get a 60D with a bunch of great prime lenses instead of a 5Dii with a cheap kit.

The 60D is not less in every area. Articulating screen which helps control overheating It shoots 50p / 60p for slow motion even though 720p is a great feature. I've shot with the 5D, 7D, 550D, and 60D and the 60D has caused the least amount of trouble so far. All but the 60D overheated continuously. I have yet to see the overheating warning once, and I shoot on the equator, it's hot here.
I do like the image of the 5D overall the best by a small margin, but in some critical focus it has issues where the 60D sensor is closer to 35mm film in terms of focal length and focus.
I don't think this thread is a waste of time at all, because the OP is looking for opinions and I would encourage him to sell his 5D soon before the bottom falls out of his resale. When the MKIII hits he will loose a few hundred more.
I sold my 550D in Dec. and 3 months later I could buy a new one for the same money I got for my used camera. That's how fast they loose value.
I say shoot the $hit out of em, then trade em up.

You both bring up Valid points, but I believe there are also others. Many people who own a t2i, 60d, etc. would love to have a 5d. You can get any cheap camera if all you want to do is slow motion shots, that would look a lot sharper than these Canons 720 60P. The Only point I would see an advantage is the articulating screen, but for that I guess you can have some kind of external monitor. Ultimately though this is only my opinion and I truly don't understand the point of this thread. He wants one camera and has another, I mean if I owned a 5d I seriously doubt I would switch it for a 60d ( which is the camera I currently own)

So what has the original poster concluded? Maybe that could end this thread.
Two options that I'm thinking. First is to get 60D and 17-55/2.8 IS, test it out for few weeks and either keep it and keep the 5D or sell the 5D. Then sell both for 5D MKIII if it has those two important updates. Second option is to get 24-105/4 IS and wait for the 5D MKIII that might have flip screen and 720p/60p. The sensor size isn't really that much of an issue since you can do everything with FF you can do with crop.

Don't lock the thread, there is useful info in here and it was fun to read through.

The squabbling has been very civil and shows some good back and forth of different videographer's needs and shooting styles.

The OP just wanted to hear other perspectives, despite whether they may be relevant to his needs or not, so keep them coming, if your perspective doesn't help the OP it may help another reader.

I at the moment have a 5D, EX1, AF100, and a gopro. they are all 100% different and optimized for different situations

i brought my 5d to shoot this event, and it's the only camera in my bag that i would do it with: http://vimeo.com/25473323
That was shot almost entirely with the 50 1.8, with a gopro shot or two in there when it started to rain. i knew i would need lots of low light, so i left the 50 on there and got closer or farther to adjust for my lack of focal variety.

then there's a batmitzah i just did(and i hate when i get asked to do them) where i brought my ex1 and 5d. the ex1 mostly stayed on sticks for the usual happenings and wireless audio. while the 5d was the runaround cam to get all my b-roll and insane low light shots

the af100 is my go to cam for narrative work, for instance this weekend we're doing a short dark script, which will have proper gaffing, ac-ing, slider, minijib, etc... i COULD use the 5d or ex1 and get great results. i'm choosing the use the af100 for it's lack of moire and alaising over the 5d, and shallower(but not too shallow!) of depth of field over the ex1. i could shoot it all with the gopro... and guess what, i WILL be shooting with the gopro, just mounted on the af100's shoe :). that's what i love the gopro for. a behind the scenes/second throwaway angle cam.

now, i obviously realize this thread is about a single cam choice. i am actually going to be selling my ex1, because i just don't use it that often. so that's the choice for my needs. and if i had to choose between the af100 and the 5D.... i'd compromise and sell the 5D and get a 60D. 900 bucks isn't a huge investment for most these days, and you can at least use the lenses in some capacity on both cameras.

the swivel screen of the 60d locks it in for me as the choice. make up for that lost stop of sensitivity by picking up a z96 light. throw the diffuser on there and dial it down to half brightness. i just really hope that they be smart and release firmware updates for all of their cameras to enable the cropped shooting mode. 5D especially, because that would mean we could then use cropped lenses on it ;)

oh and yes i highly recommend picking up a gopro, 300 bucks was never more well spent. it's a backup camera, get that wide alternate shot. clamp it to anywhere, your HEAD even. it'll capture that action that your A cam misses. and if your A cam quits on your, the gopro shots are better than no shots. i wrapped it around an oar when i went rafting, and poked it at a snake to get it to strike the cam. fun stuff :)

cheers

Had first real shootings on bright sun light and had to use DIY sunhood for the back LCD on 5D. It made the 5D pretty hard to handle because I had to be in a very low position to see the LCD because the sunhood blocked the normal viewing angle. If I had screen that I could have tilted upwards a bit I wouldn't have had the problems to watch the LCD with sunhood on. So 5D + 24-105/4 IS only is not an option. If I decide to keep the 5D and get the IS lens, I will have to probably get the Smallhd DP6 monitor since besides being maybe the best monitor for dslr's out there it will display the 5D's picture correctly after you hit record. It costs 899$ (992$ bundle) though so that gives something to think about.

So options for now are (including the differences that would happen on my bank account):

Buy 60D + Canon 17-55/2.8 IS + Tokina 11-16/2.8 + Sigma 30/1.4 and sell the 5D, Canon 16-35/2.8 II and Canon 50/1.4.

+550€ (790$)

Buy 60D + Canon 17-55/2.8 IS and keep the 5D and all lenses I own.

-1650€ (2360$)

Buy 24-105/4 IS + SmallHD DP6 (or DP4) and sell Canon 85/1.8.

-1520€ (2175$) DP6 being 1000€ after shipping, vat and taxes (or -1100€ (1580$) if bought DP4 instead that costs 580€).

If the money wasn't and issue I would probably go with the 3rd option since DP6 is very good and handy monitor and of course better than the smaller 60D monitor. Also if choosing to go with 3rd option I would have all the options available in the future after the 5D MKIII announce etc. If I choose the 1st option I think I'm not going to be buying the 5D MKIII and the 16-35/2.8 II again no matter how good the MKIII is. So I would be crop user for quite some time.

This needs some more thinking :D

edit: at this point the 3rd option with DP4 monitor is my favourite one. That monitor will be a bit largers and offer so much more features and placements than 60D's monitor.

Few more thoughts about the price differences. If I go with the 1st option, I will save 1650€ vs 3rd option (with DP4 monitor) and I can use that money to update my crop FOUR times to new model even if I only get 50% of the money back when selling 60D and its successors on the same price range. If I go with the 3rd option and get the 5D MKIII if it comes next year, I will have to spend another 1500€ after selling my 5D MKII to get it (if the body is 3000€). Of course if it has flip screen I could sell the DP4 and if I got 450€ from it I would have to pay 1050€ for the MKIII. There's always "risk" that 5D MKIII will have some superior video features that crop bodies will never get, though I don't believe that's the case since crop bodies already have way better features than 5D MKII. 3rd option is more "future proof" than the 1st option since I could make the jump to crop bodies next year if I want in case for example if the 5D MKIII doesn't offer anything special vs the cheap crop bodies. If I go with the 3rd option, MKIII fails to deliver and I make the jump to crops next year, I would probably loose around 500€ when selling the 5D, 16-35/2.8 II, 24-105/4 IS and DP4 monitor vs if I make the jump to crops now.
