Thinking about moving to Austin, TX

i heard Austin smells funny, but i seriously entertained the idea of moving there, because for reasons relatively unknown, i feel drawn there. I've never even been to Texas.

good luck if you decide to move!

The lone dissenting voice. That *would* be me. Sigh...

I lived in Dallas for a long 18 months years ago. I wasn't happy, so I left. There were 3 million+ people in the area who stayed, if that helps put things in perspective. What I'm saying is, it's more about you personally than it is about the place.

I disliked a few odd things. First, most of Texas is really pretty flat; I learned I love mountains and hills. Most of Texas is devoid of trees (and no, a cottonwood isn't really a tree in my book -- more an overgrown bush); I learned I really missed my trees. Most of Texas is windy. All the damn time. A 20 mph wind is the norm, it goes up from there. And it's arid, unless you head for Houston and the coast.

Austin is perhaps the sweet spot of Texas. If I were going to live anywhere in Texas, it would perhaps be Austin. But I wouldn't go back; not my kind of place. But a lot of people love it.

Should you go? No one knows that but you. I'd spend a couple of long vacations there to check it out thoroughly before I committed, but that might just be me. In the end, it's your choice. Good luck with it.

So, Bruce, did you actually *live* in Austin?

No, I lived in Dallas, as I said. I visited Austin, and liked it considerably more than Dallas, but the bar was fairly low. I liked San Angelo too, but Austin has the music scene. I visited a lot of Texas -- why not if you are already there? Big state. Very big.

I've also lived in the Tidewater area of Virginia, where the OP is now. Virginia Beach and Austin are not at all alike. Not apples-to-oranges. More apples-to-okra. Which is why I said if it were me (and it's clearly not me) I'd spend some time visiting to making sure I liked it before I committed.

And I'm not saying "don't go" I'm saying "make sure it's for you".

Well, as someone who grew up in Texas and has spent 30+ years here, I wouldn't live anywhere in Texas other than Austin. (Okay, maybe Marfa or the Big Bend area.)

Houston and Dallas are just massive modern cities like any others, with small pockets of culture dominated by huge expanses of strip-malls and suburbs.

"I wouldn't live anywhere in Texas other than Austin." Agree. You can always split for a month or two in the summer (New Mexico, Bozeman, San Miguel de Allende my favs) but really the summers never bothered me that much. I've always lived near U.T. or downtown but plenty of other great places. I'm currently out of town but it is a great great place.

Actually, I'd say live just outside of Austin. Round Rock, Leander, even Georgetown. Why deal with a city on a 24/7 basis? I'm an hour away, and that's actually close enough for most purposes, although I could understand why someone might want to be a leetle closer. ;)

Adding my thoughts to the mix

Adding my thoughts to the mix

Well, having made a move to a brand spankin new location myself to pursue film (Toronto) several years ago, I have to say that I didn't regret the move one bit. Of course, it was scary and risky - but oh so worth it. Also, seeing as how I'm now in Virginia Beach (where local film support is surprisingly low) and knowing Chris's talent and potential, I'm fully supportive of the move.

On one hand, it would suck for me b/c I'd be losing such an awesome partner - but I'm on board 100% for new adventures and exploring ones self.

Pluuuuuus, when Chris get's a sweet gig, I'd love to go out there and hang out for a bit.. haha....

So I have pretty much committed to it at this point, talked to my family and my boss, now have to figure out the right way to do it, much to do in 5 months!

Pile all your crap on a truck, preferably a Ford Flatbed, with your granny perched on top in her rocking chair.

Extra points for tying everything together with rope.

That's how I'd do it.

Granny might try slicing my tires, best to keep her away from the truck. Grandparents less than excited!

Well, I guess it's official since I have told everyone at my job, going to doing it at the end of the year, holy s--t. Working on getting my place ready to sell, after that I'll get all my work together and start dealing with the whole having a job and being able to eat part of it.

Congrats - and good luck.
We'll be waiting for you.
