General Think I made the wrong camera choice...

Okay, on the subject of things looking "artistic". I'm sat there watching that episode of House and laughing, I'm laughing because I'm thinking to myself "hahaha hey look guys, that happens when I film with this thing too"

Are you talking about focus issues?
Just curious - I actually haven't seen the episode myself.

A while ago an old filmmaker said to me "listen kid high quality isn't everything" and I ignored him because I'm younger and hungrier than him. Now I'm realising that he was right all along.

Now that's something we can agree on.

What the DSLR revolution is about in my observations is about size, about sensitivity, and about S35 sized sensors that smaller handycams don't have.
Yes, but based on all that, I do agree with TraumaBunny that the current foray by experienced cinematographers into using DSLRs will indeed be a temporary phase. As soon as a professional video camera is introduced that does the things they're craving about DSLRs (interchangeable lenses, big sensor, tiny form factor) there's no reason in the world for them to continue to put up with the DSLR's inconveniences (aliasing, moire, no decent audio recording, no audio monitoring, etc.)

This debate comes up all the time, about equipment quality and what's "good enough." And for some reason, people new to the game think that anyone who's been doing it for any length of time must be, therefore, clueless. It's really puzzling, but the attitude comes back again and again. It's like experience is somehow "bad" now.

TraumaBunny is kind of living that out for us right now. He started out with no experience, and has now gone through enough trial and error that he has experience. But if we were to follow his path, that would mean that anybody new should therefore not listen to him because -- he has experience! Such reasoning boggles the mind.

Look, here's the simple fact: "good judgement comes from experience. Experience comes from bad judgement." If you're buying gear and equipment because you think somehow that having some equipment is the missing link between you and greatness -- well, you're about to get some experience.

Someone's success in this industry will never, ever, ever, ever, ever be attributed to, or prohibited by, what equipment they bought! It will always be determined by WHAT YOU DID, regardless of (yes, I said REGARDLESS OF) what you did it WITH.

If image quality "matters" Paranormal Activity wouldn't have been a box-office hit.

If image quality "matters" we wouldn't have youtube celebrities.

It's a gimmick, nothing more.

One of those pampered suits from Zacuto should come hang with me someday, they'll learn a new thing or two.

When I release my films everyone will be copying and emulating me. Everyone will be on my dick and pestering me for advice, everyone will want to learn from me and the pro's will be watching in the corner and crying like menstruating girls.
TraumaBunny, this type of arrogant, belligerent, belittling, antagonistic attitude is what's going to get you shown the door. Just stop it, and you might find that you can fit in here.

I am doing things which are new and exciting, you'll assume I'm being an arrogant, snotty little prick right now but you'll soon see.
Well, maybe that's what needs to happen. Maybe you should just show us some of this new and exciting work, instead of throwing firebombs in our forum.

Dude go watch it and see for yourself. You'll be laughing and laughing. It's not just the focus issues, it's FILLED with issues. What... I'm supposed to let 'em slide because I love DSLR's? I dont think so.

If I had that attitude I would've purchased the St Anger album!

I physically sat there laughing, it was so reassuring. It confirmed to me 100% that my way is the right way.

Dont tell yourself they're being "artistic", they're not. You know it and I know it too, it's an unwanted side effect of filming with a DSLR.

Hmm... who know's maybe... just maybe they were being artistic? maybe... they were being political... yes! YES! it was a SIGN!... a sign that us cheapskates dont need faux-indie-equipment from Zacuto to get the job done. We can use the cheaper alternatives instead.

AHahahAHahAH etc,etc,etc

Quality is not a gimmick. I never said quality was the only factor, but it is part of the equation. Bringing up examples like Paranormal Activity is baseless as the whole POINT o the movie is that it is shot on a specific camera as PART OF THE STORY. Same as Blair Witch, same as Cloverfield, they want the image quality as IT IS A GIMMICK of the story.

A good example of a film without the best cameras to me is Primer. I really liked it.

Youtube Celebrities? This argument makes no sense. Some things are enjoyable no matter what quality you bring to the table. Some things are not. Would I have enjoyed seeing Pandora at 320x200 resolution blown up to IMAX size? No. No one would. The beauty of the scenes would have been lost. The point being, quality does matter in certain contexts. If I am going to spend all this time shooting something I wrote, I am going to want it to be as excellent looking as possible. I overcome not having a huge budget ALL THE TIME. But I have to draw lines and sometimes wait for the right gear. When I track people running in a hallway, running beside them, holding my 7D by itself and following them in unacceptable to me. The skew is so bad and the shaking, it would make people nauseous if it were shown on a large display. I saved up and bought a Blackbird stabalizer and now my shots look great.

Aesthetics are important. Distract people with crappy quality and crappy camera work and you just detract from your story in MY opinion.

There should be a show-then-tell policy. Show your work, then tell us how things work.

This isn't a forum built primarily of audience members, it's a forum of tech-heads and wanna-be, some-of-us-are, "filmmakers". Before anyone starts preaching and teaching, they should have their work on display to back up any claims.

Half of what Trauma is saying is right, then the other half is like someone else grabbed the keyboard. Put it all to rest with your work.

Oh... my... God...

You didn't read the "I was kidding" part, did you? (hint: I was kidding)

Are you guys being over-sensitive on purpose or what? Is this an "age difference" thing? lol is this... some kind of initiation ritual because... I'm new here???

I'm still waiting for the "we were just kidding" part...

Dont put a silly tone of voice to my words on the screen and then with the power of your creative imagination manufacture offensive characters out of them. I'm not here to hurt you or anyone else

I promise

You're pretty obnoxious and presumptuous. Age difference? Do you think you're the only young shooter around here?

... One more for board quality going down the drain swiftly...

That's assuming that DSLRs don't get updated as well with these features. The problem I see is that the difference between a still and motion camera is blurring quickly. The EPIC form factor is not so wholly different than a DSLR in terms of handling it in your hand. DSMC/DSLR, what matters is that DSLR is driving change as to expectations of future gear. People seem to like the smaller size as well and the amount of complaining about ergonomic issues will surely drive R&D.

I contend that DSMC is going to be the new wave, cameras designed for motion but with still characteristics as well. It's a great time to be involved with filmmaking.

Listen, listen. It's cool. I forgot to mention, I'm on drugs. Like, bad drugs... duuuude

No wait, I'm a paranoid schizophrenic with a personality disorder...

and I've just escaped from the local psychiatric hospital... (I was being treated for abducting kittens)

I'm really a tech from Panasonic, I'm on a covert mission to rattle cages and turn people away from DSLR's. Dont tell anyone though... by the way, I've composed every word on my keyboard with a half-eaten banana while a Russian dwarf hamster (specially trained) is doing the cha-cha on my head.

*Evil Dead voice* join us...

I'll show you guys my films once things calm down. If I fired 'em up now, everyone I pissed off will get catty and pre-menstrual, like an angry 13 year old girl who hates the other girl for having prettier shoes than her.

They'll attack me for no other reason than to "bring me down a peg or two"

You know how it is bro. Obviously, I have reasons for being so confident in talking this way.

Is this an "age difference" thing?

Hey, what's your gripe with "old people" (for lack of a better term)

And how old are you exactly? Cuz the term "thrash metal" is right out of the 80's, along with Rust In Piece & Steve Vai. Something tells me you're not that young.....

Let us know when you've got projects up. Show us what you mean, you've talked plenty.

Dude, you can't hear my voice. You've can't even physically see me moving around either. All you have is your imagination and what it's telling you.

Aren't you impressed? You physically chose to read a bunch of words on a computer screen and *ta daa* this is what your mind produces, I can't wait to see your work you must be very talented (I didn't type that in a sarcastic tone of voice)

You could convince yourself that I'm green and get upset about it. You could put a Homer Simpson like tone of voice to every word I've typed and laugh about it.

How on earth can I compete with your imagination? I'm a complete stranger to you. There is no possible way, whatsoever, that I can "prove you wrong"

So put me on ignore and take care. Being a creative person is fun, isn't it?

You're new here. You apparently don't know how things work here. This forum is grounded in polite, respectful discussion. Bragging, arrogance, belittling, smacktalking, and all the rest -- don't fly here.

You want to share your findings and teach people what you've learned? Great, do that. You want to call people names, cast aspersions on them, ridicule them, etc? That won't happen here. It doesn't matter how great your work is, if you can't participate in a compatible way you won't be welcome here.

Put away the testosterone, settle down, and see what we have to offer. Right now you're running around like a madman shouting "fire" in a crowded theater. That kind of thing doesn't fly here.

And no, there won't be any "we're just kidding" follow-up. We're not kidding. Maintaining the usefulness and functionality of the forum is our prime directive, and nobody gets to disrupt that apple cart.

?? You really can't be that ignorant... You've constantly bandied about this "age difference" and "older pros" concept. If you're this frightfully oblivious to the concept of context you may be beyond the brink of salvaging.

Again, less talk, more work.

lol I dont have ANY PROBLEMS with people who are older than me. There's teens out there who act "old", do they have any friends? no.

People choose to get old and once they do, boy do they suck. If you act old you suck, you're boring. Fact.

I'm in my twenties, 2010 sucks for music. The 80's is better for guitar stuff. Ooh are you guys gonna play "internet detective" now? This game is always fun, let's do it!

Let's make assumptions about each other.

You're... you're orange aren't you, dont lie. I can tell by the way you type. You're orange and you like moisturising eyebrows with saliva... yes, yes I can tell by the way you've structured your sentences on the screen. Your choice of profile picture also suggests that you like stale grapes dipped in vinegar...

Ooh I'm so clever, ooh I love pandering to my intellectual vanity, ooh

We could do this all day. Why bother? It's gay.

Dude, for your own sake put me on ignore NOW we wont get along.

Take care bro, I hope you have a good week \m/\m/
