Is anyone as excited as me? I've filled brackets for like twelve different pools of friends, co-workers, and online buddies. My fridge is stocked with cases of beer that'll last for weeks. And of course, I'm dressing up as a minute-man for the USA vs. England match. Come on DVXuser soccer fans, show your support for this great tournament!

ive noticed an influx of info re: this soccer event...websites have themes, the news is talking about it....is there really "soccer fever" going on in the US? if so, i don't notice...and i do try to pay attention. if you're into it, cool. the guys I work with are frenzied over the NBA right now.
I for one cant wait for football season...American Football.

Yeah, the US is no Soccer nation. But it is the biggest sport in the world, so there still is lots of excitement. Germany however is a big soccer nation. Everybody is watching! Not sure how good the german team is this year. Lost quite a few good players due to injuries. We'll see.

But I can tell you one thing: The beer is running continuously :D

Haha good news Simone. Australia play Germany first. I hope they dont make me cry too much.

Meh, second time you call me Simone... maybe I should upload a new avatar where I've got shorter hair :D

Well, even though a few good players are missing it should be no problem to make you cry. :crybaby: :D

Yeah, the US is no Soccer nation.

We're getting there... I freelance for the Seattle Sounders FC and the crowd is usually a sellout (and nuts).

Then I watch the away games with some of the stadiums half empty and I want to cry :crybaby:

Awesome

I have to miss USA vs England tomorrow because of a friend's wedding. I told him I hope he understood how good a friend I am to be doing that :)

We're getting there...

I respect anyone's fervent fan-ship for a particular sport. Soccer, Lacrosse, Women's Basketball, curling, whatever. Go you. The thing I don't appreciate about Soccer is the incessant marketing. They have been trying to get the U.S. hooked on Soccer more blatantly than a drug dealer tries to hook a young rich teen. It's been going on for DECADES now. And, it borders on obnoxious.

I'm no fan of the NFL's current way of doing things. International games, overpriced season tickets, corporate audiences at Super Bowls etc. But all that is a product of the success that evolved from the natural love this country has for the sport. Sure, there was some marketing back in the day. But primarily, it has always been about great coaches, historic games, championship match-ups, heroes/players and about the 1 and done nature of the playoffs. But, I've never felt spoon fed the sport. Or felt like it has been shoved down my throat.

Again, if you love soccer, more power to ya. I just wish they'd back off with the in-your-face-marketing. Anyone else feel me on this?

I don't think anyone is fooling themselves... soccer is never going to replace (American) football or baseball in this country, or even come close. Like I said, some of the stadiums are half empty when I watch the away games on TV. I think average MLS attendance is something like 18,000 per game. BUT, MLS seems to be able to justify adding another two teams next year in Portland and Vancouver B.C., and folks in both those cities seem to be pretty excited about it.

No big deal though, not interested? Don't watch it.
There may have been a lot of advertising lately due to the World Cup but it's no different than basketball or American football finals. The amount of crap that's on TV leading up to the Super Bowl is ridiculous. Now just imagine if you don't care for it. :)

I played all through school...GREAT sport to play....lame one to watch (thus the beer!).
I hate to say it, but even curling is a more exciting watch IMHO.

Don't watch it? How can you not when it's plastered all over the TV? All I'm saying is that they are trying too hard to build a soccer culture here. This isn't about the sport. It's about the $. And, I agree that the other more popular sports chase the dollars as well but they have been around for decades here and their evolution of popularity had more humble beginnings. Thinking about the campaign to get soccer to stick, and with all the money surrounding it it eventually will, reminds me of the other thread regarding Disney's talent to market their product and the Justin Beibers of the world. They are going to get their audience one way or the other.

My point isn't about liking soccer or not liking soccer. I can sympathize with the non-football fans out there. Because I see the ridiculous build up and coverage it gets throughout the entire year, not just the season. I mean, NFL has turned into a pimp. I love the game. I love my team but the modern day marketing? Not so much. The Monday Night opening song with all the CGI and explosives is downright embarrassing and corny. And, if I'm annoyed by soccer's coverage when its about 1/10th of 1/10th of the NFL's, I feel for ya...

Exactly my point.

I'm about to disconnect the DTV, they are all the time talking about futbol (as it is called in Spain, which obviously comes from football). Media is crazy about this world cup because they think Spain will win.... millions of merchandising objects are out in the market, and people are buying them like crazy, even newspapers are giving away scarves with their publications.....
Spain is a really soccerized country, in tv news when the sports section starts it always starts with soccer.........

And I don't like soccer.....

The USA isn't yet a footballing nation (by football I mean soccer, of course) but it is rapidly growing. There are twice as many fully dedicated soccer stadiums in the USA today than there were five or seven years ago, and more and more athletes are taking an interest in soccer competitively at the high school level. MLS is a far cry from the NBA or the NFL, but it's enjoying an ever-growing niche market of fans.

The USA has a good team this year. The thing that separates the Americans from the rest of the world is their scrappy, physical, and extremely fast style of play. If the Americans try to play "beautiful football" like the Spaniards, or the Brazilians, we'll lose because everyone else is better at that. I'm really hoping for an upset against England, but to me, England and Brazil are the two best teams in the competition this time around so it'll be tough.

And of course I'm biased, I've played the beautiful game since I was four years old all the way through college - but I really think that there is a reason that the entire world stops for this tournament and soon enough the USA will be one of the countries that loves this game like everyone else.

In the Netherlands soccer/voetbal is like in germany: the whole country is colorcorrected into orange. People even get to watch it at work in some companies.

I'm am no fan of the sport, but I am a poor lonesome uninterested guy here :). Don't hate it either.

I once heard that if an American kid finds a rock, he'll throw it away (baseball) and if a Dutch boy finds the same rock he'll kick it. (This may be the same for the German kid, the Spannish kid and so forth.)

I hope everyone who's into it has a great time watching. Maybe I'll join some friends for one game, like I usualy do. After that nice evening (I realy put effort in joining the thing than) I am unable to repeat that. Even if Holland would enter the finals and win (beat Germany or something -a lifelong compattitor in soccer for 'us')...

Isn't that a crime in Spain? :)

:lipsrseal or they'll get me........

No seriously, Usually if you are from a region you are supposed to defend that team. Sometimes when you are on vacations (inside Spain) and a tourist guide asks you where are you from. I say that I live near Bilbao and they answer, Ohh so you are from the "athletic de Bilbao"( the soccer team from Bilbao)....As if I had to like soccer... But I suppose that it also happens with other sports over there.

Now going to another topic... I always asked myself which are the differences between Rugby and american football.....

What the hell is that noise in the stadium? It sounds like a million angry bees. It's annoying enough that it made me change the channel.

LOL :) I was just laying on the couch watching and wondering the same thing.

It's uncool when you have a headache.
