tunnelmen i was planning on doing the same thing! so awesome dude. i have 3 super 8 cameras laying around that friends have just given me. but me and my girlfriend cannot get them to work for the life of us. im gonna check out pro8mm.com

question, how much roughly would it be to shoot and develop some film on a super 8? $300?
 
Pro8mm.com lists most filmstocks as $30 per 50 foot reel including processing. I believe a 50 foot reel gives just over 2 minutes at 24 fps. If your shooting ratio is say 5-1 (largish for film, smallish for video), that's 30 minutes of film, call it 15 reels, so lets call it $4-500 for film and development.

The big cost comes in scanning the film to the computer. I've seen prices from $0.10/foot up to several dollars per foot online, check around locally to see if you can get better prices. The price seems to depend on how much work you want the teleciners to do regarding colour matching and grading. If you just scan the raw stock and do all the colour work yourself in post, you're still looking at close to $1,000 in scanning costs, and it goes up from there.

If you cut the film yourself and then send in the final version you could concievably save some money that way (scanning 3 reels versus 15), but you would want to check with who is scanning it for you as I think the splices need to be pretty good to do this.

I was tempted to try this too, but I personally couldn't justify the costs. If someone else pulls it off though I am very curious to see the results.
 
whoah thats expensive. i would not shoot a whole short on it. but i'd shoot an extra camera POV and splice in some extra footage the way oliver stone does. it's the developing thats expensive huh? im going to look into labs around me here in LA.

I shot "Developed" entirely on Super 8mm for LossFest.

When I heard of this fest my mind went right for this format. I don't know if your set on a place to buy/develop/telecine but check out these guys:

Scroll to the bottom. You can get 6 rolls of your choice, plus develop, and telecine for $359. They do an awesome job and you can tell they really love the format. If you only lived in Southern California I would be totally down to help you out. I have a Canon 1014xls that wants to be shot more often. Haha :)
 
Bout being punked...I thought that I had made it clear that the Super 8 thing wasn't really a possibility, but no one seemed to catch on...then, I started to think that maybe it was funny to ignore...but theeennnnnnnnn, I realized that I'm not that important.

Anyway, HEY ZAZA!

Doesn't look like I'm gonna make it in this time guys. Been working on something, but I'm really upset that I haven't made any progress for this fest....
