You got it EXACTLY right  That's what we were going for... but reading how most are confused I might have to make the hit and run more obvious for the viewer. Still contemplating though...
I liked it. There was a since of mystery, I didn't know what had happened to the girl, but it didn't matter. All that mattered was the fact that this guy was trying to save her. Good job and good luck!
This surprised me, I clicked through all the films I knew about before timefest started and have been working through the films I didn't notice before viewing started. This is the first one to really grab me as just an awesome film. Like others, I couldn't get the story, but just watching it I sensed a definite "professional" quality that made it very interesting. Choices in lenses, CC, editing and performance all really held my attention without even knowing what was going on. (Which I do mean as a compliment) Once you fix the sound issues and maybe clear up the story a bit, I think you'll have a really excellent film.
In the past few days, DVXusers Ben Sliker and Justin Kuhn sat down and chatted over AIM while simultaneously watching the same TIMEFEST films. We call them, "The AIM sessions". Here's their thoughts on "The Walk Back"
This is a 'special edition' of the AIM sessions, Assistant Director Brad Mate has tagged in for Justin from the crew of JAM. Please excuse the stupid out of order time stamps by iChat.

spesliker (12:53:57 PM): alright, walk back
spesliker (12:54:10 PM): ready?
TheBrad84 (12:54:28 PM): rdy
spesliker (12:54:45 PM): 3
spesliker (12:54:46 PM): 2
spesliker (12:54:46 PM): 1
spesliker (12:54:48 PM): go
TheBrad84 (12:54:46 PM): shaky
spesliker (12:55:05 PM): f*ck ... that had to hurt.
TheBrad84 (12:55:03 PM): for some reason i feel like i have to pee
spesliker (12:55:10 PM): aww ...I just wet my pants *goes to change pants*
spesliker (12:55:25 PM): she did an awesome job of crashing that bike
spesliker (12:55:44 PM): airplane
spesliker (12:55:59 PM): and why is this guy walking down here?
spesliker (12:56:16 PM): yeah .. a cigarette is going to go well with your bleeding spleen.
TheBrad84 (12:56:07 PM): lol
TheBrad84 (12:56:20 PM): stop trying to kill yourself while hes trying to save you!
spesliker (12:56:38 PM): lol
spesliker (12:56:52 PM): you don't know which one will kill you
spesliker (12:57:03 PM): seriously ... where did this guy come from?
spesliker (12:57:35 PM): i know i always walk down random ass roads for fun
spesliker (12:57:47 PM): oh, shi* ... he hit her
spesliker (12:57:49 PM): nice reveal there
TheBrad84 (12:57:42 PM): should have brought...the car back
spesliker (12:58:12 PM): lol ... then they couldn't have called it "the walk back", it would have been "the drive back"
spesliker (12:58:35 PM): what is he thinking about?
spesliker (12:58:47 PM): dude ... your fingerprints are all over her
spesliker (12:58:58 PM): i wouldn't leave her. They'll find you.
TheBrad84 (12:59:20 PM): yeah, he wants to smoke while hes carrying someone across the countryside
spesliker (12:59:34 PM): that's really gonna help how out of breath you are.
spesliker (12:59:52 PM): don't smoke the filter
spesliker (1:00:00 PM): always a bad idea.
spesliker (1:01:09 PM): WHY?
spesliker (1:01:30 PM): none of the decisions he made, made sense
spesliker (1:02:13 PM): not in a right and wrong sense either, it's like he deliberately changed his mind so that he would have to carry her longer until she died ... at least ... i think she died.
TheBrad84 (1:02:10 PM): lol
TheBrad84 (1:02:12 PM): yes
spesliker (1:02:30 PM): thoughts?
TheBrad84 (1:02:43 PM): its nice to see a film with some emotional weight, i think we've been missing that in some of the last films we've watched.
TheBrad84 (1:03:32 PM): would have liked a little more logical sense to the guys actions. would have liked to know more about her injuries as she seems strong enough to stand and hold on to him and talk
TheBrad84 (1:04:05 PM): she needs to be bruised or cut and at the very least dirtied
spesliker (1:04:30 PM): i didn't know why he was conflicted either
spesliker (1:05:49 PM): so .. he apparently runs her off the road, then parks his car miles away, walks all the way back, starts to carry her back to his car, then turns around to carry her back to where she was, then gives up and plops her in the center of the road ... none fo this helps him or her. Maybe I'm missing something.
TheBrad84 (1:06:01 PM): nope, sounds about right
spesliker (1:07:39 PM): i normally don't like the 35mm adapter look, but this time it seemed to work well for me
spesliker (1:08:07 PM): the shallow focus intensified the mood, instead of just being there for the sake of it.
spesliker (1:08:19 PM): and you are right, the emotional weight was nice.
TheBrad84 (1:09:56 PM): i liked the score. very simple but it filled in nicely and wasnt overpowering. liked the artsy shots of the stream, though the shots in the beginning with the sound of the stream were a bit much for me. i thought all the pieces of the film fit the mood that they were going for, just would have liked the actors, especially the injured one to be a little more dirtied because the setting and tone is gritty
spesliker (1:10:33 PM): we love dirty actors
TheBrad84 (1:10:24 PM): truth
spesliker (1:10:45 PM): next time john abbott is going to have mud all over his face, and come out of the water to kill people Kurt Russell style.
TheBrad84 (1:10:52 PM): i was thinking blood orgy
spesliker (1:11:11 PM): BLOOD ORGY!!
spesliker (1:11:14 PM): HAIL SATAN
TheBrad84 (1:11:15 PM): hail satan
(<-for those who didn't get the reference and think we're demon worshipers.)
we tend not to look back on other reviews, so I apologize if our gripes have been griped about already! The mixture of the images/sound/score in this film flowed very well, and was downright beautiful. Looking back on your thread now, I see you might put an image of a crashed car in there. Hell, no need for a car, buy a headlight, smash it up and throw it out in the field, do a closeup of it and stick it in the front next to the stream/watch shot. This would have cleared up like 99% of the issue I had with this film. There's nothing there to show that he's stranded as well.
Like we said, this film carried some emotional weight to it, which really draws the viewer in. Great job!
