The Vintage Lens Thread

In bold: When I put a medium format 50mm lens on a 7D will I get the same FOV as from a EF 50mm lens?

I'm going to go out on a limb here and say YES even though I have never done it and have no experience with medium format lenses!

Here's why I think so. The number 50mm does not have anything to do with the size of the image circle. It has to do with the focal length.
For example, when comparing on the same sensor ...
an EF-S lens with a smaller image circle at a 50mm focal length is the same field of view (fov) as
an EF lens with a larger image circle at 50mm focal length. Therefore,
a medium format lens with an even larger image circle at 50mm focal length would also give the same fov.

Once again, I have never done it, never used a medium format lens, this is just my intuitive guess.

Here is a lens comparson I posted a while ago.

http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showpost.php?p=1343099&postcount=5

The first is a Zeiss Jena 50/3,8 medium format prime and the last picture is a Nikon 50/1,4 35mm format prime.

As you can see, exactly the same.

Difference is, if I would replace my sensor by a bigger one, I would have more FOV - that´s why in medium format world a 50mm is rated as wide.

Just shot my first wedding using some vintage glass and I have to say I'm loving the "character" of some of the old lenses. Color me amazed. I'll post a trailer soon.

I just found a New FD 50mm f2 lens that was being sold for 20 bucks. Supposedly it's a very very rare lens?

Anyone know how much it is worth?

Don't know about it's rarity but I don't think you'll be able to use it without sacrificing light sensitivity and/or infinity if you plan on adapting it to Canon EOS. Still that's a great price.

Today, I picked up a 28 2.8 Telesar M42 mount lens. Anyone know anything about it? I tried googling it and nothing really shows up. Anyway, with the little testing I've done with the lens it looks pretty good and has intermittent "swirly bokeh". Not as pronounced as a Helios but interesting none the less.

Speaking of Russian glass, anyone shoot with them? I'm seriously looking at lenses from Mir and Volna but would love to see some vids shot with them if they're out there. Thanks in advance!

Thanks so much for posting that. Great work! I'm really digging the look of the Russian lenses. What are your thoughts on the Mir 24M?

i got one labelled Mir-24H from one friendly ebay seller from kiev (Mir-24M, the 35mm f2 in M42 mount) great value for money. i love the soviet lenses very much for their muted colors and excellent bokeh rendition.
shooting neutral with tamed contrast and sharpness really makes a very nice filmic look with happy accidents regarding flare and out of focus elements. if you like a little vintage character, those are really great.
i suggest checking out this french guy website for more info on the russian offering. he's done an awesome documentation work and even tested for 5D mirror incompatibilities...

Hi all. I'm interested in trying out some [FONT=Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif]Minolta Rokkors lenses. However, the eos adapters have a glass element in them. Would this glass affect image quality in any way?

I highly reccommend Leica R lenses with photodiox adapters. Pricey, but build quality is amazing and focus throw is super long and smooth. You need to find a good source though as they tend to go for $4-600 each on eBay.

I agree, the Leica R lenses are what I would buy if I were HUNTING lenses to buy.

I am not crazy about Zeiss like everyone else, to me they are too soft wide open and if you shoot closed, you get morie. They do take nice STILLS at F8 though.
Unfortunately I need a lens that offers more than just f8.

Back in the day we joked about a friend of ours who only shot at f8 for everything. :Drogar-BigGrin(DBG)

Of all the vintage lens', which are the best deals and still give good image for video?

I just ordered the Helios 44 for $35.

Any other for under $100?

This thread is amazing. A wonderful source of info. I see a lot of different prime lenses... are there any good zooms that anyone knows of? I wanted to research alternatives to the Canon 17-55 f2.8.

The Helios is unbeatable as far as price to quality goes so it's sort of downhill from there. If you're willing to go up to $200 though, you can get a Mir 24M for a little over $100 and it's a 35mm f/2 already. The imagery is super sharp and it has that Russian Mojo going for it. Another that I just ordered looks promising as well. It's a Pentacon Six mount (medium format) Volna-3 80mm 2.8. Not the fastest lens, but holy s**t the images look amazing taken with that lens. Like Technicolor.

Of course you have the Mir 1 and Jupiter-9 as well that are sub $100 from the right places. Hope this helps!
