The Panasonic GH3

To those who defend me on this thread, thanks and I mean that. To those who offer nothing constructive just hatred, well I'm afraid that is part of the parcel of putting yourself out there. Everyone gets it be it Philip Bloom, Vincent Laforet, even goddamn Spielberg gets hate. Having an opinion is enough. Having an opinion on the internet is even more provocative, and people lack the social barrier to being personal and insulting online. You will get that. It is unavoidable. What surprises me is the sheer persistence of some people. What is the agenda?

About rumours - they're a bit of fun but 50% of the time they're genuine leaks. It is difficult to keep things under wraps when so many people are involved, to develop a product involving thousands of people and keep it secret in the age of the internet for 2 years solid, is hard. Rumours exist for that reason. How many times has 43rumors been first to the new camera announcements whilst everyone else is under NDA? I only post info that comes from a good source. I've written for DPReview, UK printed press (Sound on Sound) and both Gizmodo and Engadget have picked up on my stuff so I don't need any additional hits from forums. If I wanted that I'd post a complete lie on the site and watch the hit counter go 10% for 1 day, fall back to normal for the rest of the year. Doesn't seem like a good move to me, the risks outweigh the gains.

I'm a filmmaker and I wanted a platform to put my work out on. If people are interested in the site, that's great and a lot are. But if just one person sees my work and likes it that is even better. Why would I want to jeopardise both aspects of my life to post something completely made up, purely to chase the attention of people who aren't interested in my work as a cinematographer, only the rumour mill?

Yes I can be better at labelling my opinion as an opinion, but when I so strongly believe in something, it comes across as me talking factually, logically, honestly. That is an aspect of my personality. I hate fluffy statements and constant disclaimers. Take the whole blog as my personal opinion, my view on the world, the information I absorb from others, the filmmaker just trying to shoot.

Shooting and sharing... It all comes down to that.

If any of the haters can give me a reason why that is wrong, I'd love to hear it.

I've got two boys...15 and 12. When the 15 year old picks on the 12 year old, I always remind him ...be careful and that one day his younger brother might be bigger !

Andrew ...I read your site a couple of times a week . Very informative . Anyone who knows ...online ...if you have an opinion ... a real opinion , at least 50% of the readers will be negative. thanks and keep up the good work.

Hi everyone,

I am really sorry to find this thread with it´s nice and short title: "Panasonic GH3" taking a totaly wrong direction with attackin´Andrew or in general, Sources who share rumors about upcoming hardware.
When it comes to Andrew - as far as I can remember: "I think he was the FIRST to post the correct rumor about the FS700, that it will have revolutionary features for it´s pricerange and will shake the independent filmmakers world - that turned out to be correct!

Since then, at least for me, eoshd.com turned out to be a valid source for rumors, that give reason for hope, to get high quality for a reasonable price in the near future - as not everybody here or in the world of independent filmmaking can buy what he/she would like to use or own.

For that and exactly that reason we like to speculate about what camera X will or should be like and the rumor-sites are so popular.

Now - let´s start with the more interesting stuff: The upcoming Panasonic GH3...

Once, I started a thread which was adressed to Panasonic but went down in the waves of threads here on dvxuser....if you want to take a look and participate:

http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthread.php?272955-Dear-Panasonic-please-read-and-realize-you-have-to-be-REALLY-innovative!&highlight=

Let´s start with the ergonomics:

Do you remember these pictures?

attachment.php

...just a bit more in the direction of a Hasselblad - THAT would really R.O.C.K !!!

hasselblad-h4d200ms.jpg

U know what I mean? Just ad a Top-Handle and a bunch of mounting-points....dream-over ;-)

Now to the most important part: THE TECHNICAL SPECS - wishlist or speculations:

1. improved codec or post/video-processing for the same or better resolution & natural sharpness as the GH2 with an option for high bitrate recording

2. Better lowlight & dynamic range (hopefully not just a small portion of it!)

3. 1080p60 or 50p with ALL the options beginning from 24p to 60p Pal and NTSC like the Canon DSLR (even though I personally don´t need any interlaced or 30p framerates)

4. Headphonejack (this should be a must, as the 5D and D800 have it)

5. 1080p120 or 100fps slow-motion mode would be a KILLER argument for the Cam (I would prefer this feature over the high bitrate with closed eyes!)
But to be honest: I would lower my expectations for a clean 1080p slowmotion-mode on the GH3 as 720p 100/120fps would be more realistic as Panasonic would save these features for their higher-end models like the AF100 processor.

6. Better Viewfinder/LCD-Monitor

7. Hopefully a weathersealed body

8. Hopefully a more professional and rigid mounting option (Camcorder-Like), so that the camera doesn´t slide away by using a follow focus

9. Digital or mechanical ND´s would be nice but....hmmm....I don´t think this will come true for the GH3....let´s see.

10. And last but not least...as the GH2 had the possibility to record 40fps in over 4K I think, the GH3 should top that and maybe include a 3K/4K recording mode, restricted to more than 40fps like maybe 1,2,3,4 or 5 Minutes....that would be a really nice addition.

With all the mentioned features (if implemented - okay let´s add the 4:2:2, 10bit, HDSDI ;-)

Joke aside - with the list implemented and the GH3 in the pricerange of maybe a maximum of 2000€ incl kitlens or maybe 2500€ with the 12-35mm - I would buy two!!! as there would be simply nothing to compete with the versatility of such a camera in that pricerange.

Okay - NOW - Dream OVER!

I am not the biggest fan of Andrew Reid opinions, but at least he has one. He is a bit on the sensosialism side of new repoting sometime. IT might be a markineting strategy or his personality. But I preffer that to the Mr clean guys, those sponsored bloggers that are selling us snake oil as the latest Canon 5d mark 3.

Such a lame camera, with such low resolution in the 1080p to 4k world we are living in. I am not until now in the 4k bandwagon, but please the 5d3 is closer to SD than HD. More so than in its vaunted, yes vaunted low light quality, where everything is smeared to SD resolution by aggressive in camera noise reduction. But some people will tell you that it will take well sharpening. Sharpen some human being faces to the level that they tell you and look at the result. And I can give numerous other example like the light craft ND, that softens a lot above 50 mm. People are still referring to some bloggers supposed reviews vaunting it. When you take the Canon cameras add in this Vari ND you are effectively shooting in SD definition.

I think it is clear from the Zacuto test how soft and lack of detail the Canon Dslr 7d was. Now you have to pony $ 3500 for even softer image. That was the gift to Canon to have put it where it was with money from their pocket. But guest what no one of those expert would say so.

For me what is the most exciting of the rumors about the gh3 is the claimed wide dynamic range sensor from the 43rumors site. A better DR of at least 12 stop in video mode with a good flat picture profile would be big big big. This is the last straw into the filmic look. Many people don't understand the importance of dynamic range. We already got the dof, resolution, frame rate, whats left is the DR. That is why you see the alexa as highly regarded even compared to the higher rez Red and now black magic is emphasizing on it.

Everyone gets it be it Philip Bloom, Vincent Laforet, even goddamn Spielberg gets hate.

You shouldn't be surprised you get the negative stuff. Stating opinion as fact, calling people idiots for the choices they make. That's classless. Calling yourself a cinematographer and filmmaker, when what you do overwhelmingly is put shots to music. Nothing wrong with that, and it can be a good watch. But those that call themselves cinematographers also set up, augment and modify light. Your skills are closer to Bloom's than Laforet's...but putting yourself in the same sentence as Spielberg? Really?

That said, I visit your site regularly and will continue too. The good stuff outweighs the stuff above.

HA. HA. HA. hilarious. The hatred comes from your tabloid style journalism. Its a different kind of hate from what you describe. Philip, vincent or spielberg have class and dignity. And please stop flattering yourself. Let your work speak for itself.

Remember when you had to make a fake dvxuser account just to praise your own video? Pathetic. Read this post you just made. Full of gloating and self glorification.

i dont question your talent skills or knowledge, but i can see through intentions.
Try having some class in journalism or atleast have a disclaimer if the article is an opinion or real news.

Dont post "Canon 5d mk 3 is a failure!" Then the article is complete utter BS. Sensationalism.
If you reply with 'thats who i am' or to 'make your post attractive', then I rest my case.

anywaythis will be the last post ill make about this.

posts a eoshd.com article on DVX = drama

For those of you wondering why here is a good place to start.

There is more on this board if you go searching, a lot of older members here do not like Andrew. Its been a few years at this point. I just ignore him for the most part.

As far as the rumor is concerned we will see both sites have made big mistakes in the past- ( i hope its true )

I don't know anything about Andrew Reid, but I quite like EOSHD and find the accuracy of his advice to be supported by my own experiences.

As for the GH3, weather-sealing, dynamic range, and AF are my top 3 priorities. Not that I'll be buying it for a while anyway - quite happy with my hacked GH2.

I like EOSHD & I like DVXUser.
I don't like all this negativity, it makes DVXUser a less enjoyable place to be.
I think this thread should be closed.
Re starting a new GH3 thread minus the negativity, might be a good idea.

Come on guys. Opinions are like ????? We all have them. But Andrew. Your stock would raise if you just showed some class like say Mr. Bloom. I go to your site here and there. Mostly read it on the John though my iPhone. Yes, you put yourself out there. It just when you defend yourself to comments made on your site harshly by calling them dimwits or other names. I've even seen curse words from you to comments and have been on the tail end of it a year or so ago.
Just try not to get so BUTTHURT when people call you out, for any reason. Learn from Bloom how to handle trolls.

To the rest of us. If you don't like it, change the channel or go get a Chick-fil-A sandwich. There is plenty of other sites where you can get NEWS, not just copy paste headlines.

I'm sorry, but Andrew Reid lacks any form of self-respect or class. He flames down people who disagree with him and 'supports' his arguments with his own twisted, made up facts.
Just look at his posts on his 5DMK3 video and Sony's EA50 video.

I am perfectly fine if he just kept his opinions to himself and not assert them as if they are facts and hopelessly insult anyone who has a different view. To be honest, Andrew deserves all the disrespect he is garnering. And please people, stop comparing him to Sir Bloom. Andrew's not even worthy of that. Just read why Andrew was banned from this forum in the first place. Just dishonesty and underhanded attacks are simply uncalled for and simply cannot be condoned.

Kind of like you reap what you sow, right?

I started this thread with the intention of generating discussion about the GH3, and hoping people shared what information and thoughts they had about the GH3.

The thread has obviously deviated way off course. If any mods feel that this thread has lost its way, please do not hesitate to delete it. Perhaps we can begin a new GH3 thread once the camera is officially unveiled by Panasonic.

mediaplexx, those photos look really cool - they remind me of my Panasonic GS400! Perhaps Panasonic will release the GH3's sensor in a "handycam" body similar to the Sony VG20? I saw something similar regarding that a few weeks back here: http://www.43rumors.com/ft5-dont-ex...big-oly-announcement-is-coming-mid-september/

Good call. Please do.

The only problem i have with the (hacked) GH2 is the dynamic range. If they improve that, even to 5DII levels, it will be a good improvement. If the GH3 can push towards 12 stops, it will be a huge hit.

Ive said my stuff so im proceeding to the gh3 rumor.

The 70-80 mbps codec is quite far fetched although i would love to have it, i have doubts panasonic would actually do this.
weather sealed body, possible based on 12-35mm 2.8
120fps slowmo - @720p, very possible. @1080p, unlikely but possible.

@donald lol ill buy you a drink if i ever visit sg i the future hhaha

I hope he does not go on the other extreme from an opinionated guy to the other extreme you are suggesting. I prefer a controversial bad guy who is going to get me some facts (even if you have to take a lot of info and emotion) than the nice guy, who never has to say a bad word about anything, more so from certain manufacturers. Bloggers are killing proper journalism because they can live only from referral and advertising. Perhaps the only guy that I found to be credible is dan chung from dslr news shooters. Look at his interview of Canon boss at NAB about the softness of 5d3, you will see how proper critical journalism is needed to be. I know a lot of followers of some dslr world guru won't like that.
