The Panasonic G1HD | GH-1 Video Mode : A Real Video Mode

There is really no need to compare the GH1 with the 5D Mark ll, the Scarlet (in rendering mode) or whatever else is and isn't out there. This camera is happening now and it has its unique features and good looking output. It is a great step forward. If you want to get one fine if you don't want it good for you because is your very own choice. I can't wait to get mine.

Yeah...it's inevitable that it gets compared to the Red One -- but I can buy a GH1 and a healthy set of accessories/support equipment for the cost of renting the Red One for e week.

It's tempting to compare to the Scarlet, but the scarlet is nothing more than a set of specifications. We may as well compare the GH1 to the GH2 which will eventually be it's successor.

I am actually pleased with the AVCHD workflow though. As I mentioned somewhere else, may have even been in this thread, I just got back from a project where I was a 1-man crew. I had to haul a HVX-200 and support equipment (big bulky video-tripod, external hard drives, an old PowerBook to read P2 cards, etc...) across the country. It was a lot of work.

If I could have taken a GH1, a fistful of SDHC cards, and my $8 Monoprice.com SDHC card reader, life would have been a lot different -- and I'm not necessarily convinced that the final product would have looked that much different. Ok, maybe different, but not necessarily in a negative way.

I couldn't agree more. I haven't been to the Scarlet forum for many months. Simply because I came to the conclusion that, for me, it was a waste of time nothing but renders, fanboys and speculation. But with the GH1 out on the market I thought I would check in to see if anything was happening. Nothing.

SPARTA is better :)

I prefer "The Mars Volta" over "Sparta"
Ha, ha - Don't worry about what I just said :)

I've been reading the GH1 forum on here from day 1 & I’m wanting the camera more each day.

I've got a question for Kholi. (Or whoever knows the answer) - Hey man, did you colour grade your Vimeo GH1 clips,
or is that footage untouched & right out of the camera? They all have that nice highlight tint to them. If it is out the
camera, what settings are responsible for that? And are you using your Polarizer filter in the thrift store vid too?
'Cos the dynamic range is looking pretty nice on your clips. I noticed that the cat clip SonicStates posted has a similar warm highlight tone.

My Internet connection is bandwidth limited to 1G a month - Damn South Africa's internet is expensive.
So I haven't downloaded the raw files, & have only viewed them on Vimeo & hence my above grading question.

100% thanks to all you guys experimenting with the GH1's for us, we all highly appreciate it.

:dankk2:Keep up the good work!

No grading on this last one and no polarizer either. Just naked lens. No ND's either, as a matter of fact.

Olympus lenses w/AF for Gh1

Olympus lenses w/AF for Gh1

Quick question, will AF work with other Non Micro third lenses?

Here's a listing off of the Panasonic page that details the updates with the limitations and functionality on a lot of the 4/3 gear.
http://panasonic.jp/support/global/cs/dsc/connect/g1.html

Also: recommend updates for..

ZUIKO DIGITAL 25mm F2.8 Firmware version 1.2
ZUIKO DIGITAL 35mm F3.5 Macro Firmware version 1.2
ZUIKO DIGITAL ED 14-42mm F3.5-5.6 Firmware version 1.3
ZUIKO DIGITAL ED 35-100mm F2.0 Firmware version 1.2
ZUIKO DIGITAL ED 40-150mm F4.0-5.6 Firmware version 1.3

Also note that other than the Panasonic lenses, nothing else available will/can support Pana's in-lens IS.

Alright! Good to know, so what's responsible for the silky smooth/tinted highlights? I really like that organic look you're getting.
I've used an HV30 and I never got highlights like that from the camera. (At least not that I remember)

"Thrift Store", Around 00:45 & 02:13
"Shaky Hands" 00:33
and on this video: http://vimeo.com/4468275

Exposure and the larger sensor's Range. Hunter placed grey right in the center which is pretty great, and exposing by eye, what looks right to me or what's a good ratio.

Also, tuning contrast and the rest has helped immensely.

Did you record the HV30 to HDV or capture the HDMI to Cineform or uncompressed?
