The Panasonic G1HD | GH-1 Video Mode : A Real Video Mode

The download looks good to me. I won't go analizing it frame by frame though! I don't know about what anybody else thinks but this little camera looks great. Thanks Kholi for sharing. Is the end of the video GH1 too or is it Red?

All GH-1. Check out the compression break during the backflip.

John's question is funny, though (Kholi, he simply didn't completely get your oops).

RED will have some trouble for selling their upcoming stuff with these new toys. Just a guess.

Maybe not exactly with the GH1 but with the NanoFlash around and these small cameras?

Live HDMI out (on a large sensor size) is just a matter of time -- do not forget the full HD 1/3" is already out there. It won't be easy to compete.

Agreed. The world has certainly changed a lot since Scarlet was first announced. Things are about to get much more heated. Even so.. While compromised, I think RED will always have it's place. Maybe just not quite what they had in mind. My two cents :)

Hi Guy's, I'm new here.. but been lurking around the site for a few days now.. and coming from a 'stills' background, I'm completely new to video recording with anything... ever! I’ve been a still cam guy all my life with no interest in video what so ever.
But with the (near) introduction of the GH1, along with the posted videos from here and around the net, all has certainly peaked my curiosity and my interest.
From a stills guy & video newbies perspective I must say.., WoW!
.. I am Impressed!

I'm interested of course because I have the’G1’ since Dec 08, and am just now becoming comfortable enough with all its capabilities and ‘nuances’ to confidently achieve what I want from it. There’s lots to master about this little cam in order to capture a meaningful, thought provoking, emotional message in just a ‘single frame’. But now, after seeing some of the ‘better’ videos, a single picture just seems so inadequate to the task in conveying all the intended feelings, (or maybe I’m just looking for new challenges!)

As an example, the video below, although it may not be technically perfect from your collective experiences, but from the perspective of the ‘uninitiated’ (me), I found the dream like quality of this clip, a seemingly mundane, everyday event become an emotional and inspiring statement (of what ever you interpreted it to be).
Something else that ‘I’ve’ just discovered, - (should have been drop dead obvious), is the roll music plays in adding so much to that ambiance. (old hat for you guys).
I don’t know why I didn’t see all this before and gravitate to videography long ago.., though it has existed in front of me all this time!

In short, what I’m trying to say is, I’m inspired and excited by the power of this medium. I lay much of the blame for this on ‘the members of this site. “Your interest and dedication are infectious”. Besides, you guy’s are having just way to much fun all by yourselves.. so move over!..
..but I see there is a lot to learn before I get my feet wet, so I’ll step back and just listen, watch and learn something new from all of you for awhile.., then ask a lot of dumb questions later on.. (sorry!)

(possibly posted & seen here before.. but what is your opinion of it.. 'ala GH1 and its artistic value?)

Yep I saw that, but then again that kind of movement has to be avoided I guess. Could live HDMI out be hacked or firmwared? I was just looking at the nanoflash and it would fit perfectly with the GH1. It would be a killer combo.

No need for me personally. I did it on purpose to illustrate a point. The rest of my rehearsal I shot 720/60P and did a 23.98 timeline. Looked excellent, ESPECIALLY for action.

John, could you spot the 720/60P mixed into the footage I posted? I bet someone can, but if the majority can't I think it illustrates another point about just using the camera's different modes in the right areas.

I am not going to even try! It looks so good together that is very difficult to find any difference. That is excellent because in reality you only have basically seconds of each shot in a continuos sequence in narrative, and especially music videos, and there is virtually no time to even realize or analize the difference, especially for the general public. Is like when you mix footage from an HVX and a HPX 500 by example. If booth are shot well you have no problem doing it. I like the look of the final scene with the two guys. That is really what I will be looking for when I get mine. I want to experiment with couple of ideas in the vein of the CSI:New York look with a less shallow DOF to it. Clean and sharp with very neutral color.

On a similar tangent, it would have been interesting if you had dropped in a shot taken with the kit lens. :)

How "glaring" would the differences be in that case, given all other camera settings being the same?

hey Sip, welcome.

yeah when I saw that clip the first thing I thought was "I can slap an anamorphic lens on this sucker and make the film look like blade runner" which is exactly what I'm gonna do.

Thanks Squig I'd like to see that and how you did it!
I'll have my Panasonic popcorn maker loaded and ready to go for the Premiere - lol

it's all smoke and mirrors

erm except the GH1 doesn't have a mirror

well if all goes well maybe I'll be taking it to toronto next year.

Of course, they have it. RED's offer is a way further than just 1080p towards a higher digital cinema resolution. You have no 'so many' manufacturers to offer 3K or 4K (nowadays via RED ONE) or 5K or even 6K soon.

Red compromised? haha... You can't compare a GH1 to a scarlet... if you thought comparing HVX's and EX1's was hard because they are from different planets then Scarlet is from an other dimension.

Don't get me wrong, the GH1 is sick, but you can't compare it with a Scarlet. It is all about what you need, just look at the samples, or wait till Scarlet is out and then look at the samples. It is all about the content anyway.

You're right, a GH-1 can't compare with a Scarlet, even in Scarlets fictional form. LoL

And, yeah, whether you want to believe it or not, a lot of your Scarlet peers that are pining after the 2/3" version are going to move to MKii's and GH-1s before the Scarlet comes into fruition.

Mostly because they have something to shoot NOW... and not waiting for a camera.

That should be the end of this discussion in this thread. Please do not clutter it with Scarlet (Fictional camera) vs GH-1 (real camera) wars.

This is all very subjective, everybody has different needs.

I think RED's challenge will be convincing us that we need a RAW workflow.. resolutions up to 3K, 4K, etc. I'm not sure I do. And I have worked with them in the past.

Even today a lot of what we work on ends up on a DVD after all. There is a lot more to this than just a higher resolution. For example it becomes more expensive to produce such formats especially post production.

Red compromised? haha...

Sure. When Scarlet was first announced RED was unique. They offered us something nobody else at the time could. Now we can have full frame 1080p with interchangeable lenses and killer low light performance at under $3,500? This is just the beginning. Clearly, the game has changed.

I don't mean to hijack the thread. Who knows! RED has more revisions coming up for us. I hate to speculate, just very curious. Two more cents :)

no you can't compare a camera to a brochure

you must have not caught this.

Nobody is cluttering your thread Kohli, because it isn't. I was responding to the Red post... :sigh:

I don't have 2/3" scarlet peers, I am renting a Red One or Epic-X... if I was buying it would be a GH1 right now... Can you show me where the heck I said otherwise?!?!

Chill the f# out... Don't get so flustered boys... nobody is pissing on your fun, so stop being so defensive and misrepresenting my posts.

Have fun, see ya later... but don't pretend like I said something that I didn't.
