The Panasonic G1HD | GH-1 Video Mode : A Real Video Mode

wide angle and crop factor

wide angle and crop factor

if the crop factor in creative movie mode is bigger than 2x it will be hard to get wide angle shots...

1/50, 250ISO, 50/1.4... I'm overexposed by a good two stops... indoors with available light.

It's strange.

crop factor

I am reading the pdf manual and i found a setting called REC AREA. when recording movies in manual exposure the camera sets the REC AREA to MOVIE and this REC AREA is different from the still picture area. What I am thinking is: is this movie REC AREA using all the sensor keeping the 2x crop factor or this movie REC AREA uses a small amount of the sensor increasing the crop factor? this is important because we need to know the crop factor in manual movie mode to know about the use of the old prime lenses...

It seems that it does not make sense panasonic reduce the amount of sensor area to shot movies. it seems this REC AREA setting is just to show the 16:9 aspect ratio of the movie recording and it does not affect the sensor area, so the crop factor for creative movie recording is the same for still = 2x but i am not sure about that because i do not have the gh1 in my hands

We're all wondering what that does? Is it a blowup of the stream or use smaller real estate on the sensor...
Ps. where did you find the manual?
It's described briefly only once in the manual, on page 129. This feature is apparently available in the GH1's Custom Menu. See attached.

Oh good...I have that same Super Takumar 50mm f 1.4 lens collecting dust (not on the lens of course).

I just scored a minolta rokkor mc 50mm f/1.4 mint for $60 on ebay. much nicer bokeh than the nikon and very sharp. those super taks are nice too.

Is this info regarding some footage uploaded somewhere? I'm not online that much right now but I've been trying to keep up.
Thanks

Edited: Sorry, now I think maybe you're just referring to the low light capabilities and are basically saying that shooting at 250asa, 1/50th indoors with available light would be possible at an f-2.8 (aka, 2 stops over at an f-1.4). I thought that you were giving info about some footage where there was something strange showing up while shooting indoors, 2-stops overexposed.

According to Watch Impress Review the Motion jPeg is around 30Mbps.

Edit: And looking at their sample videos I think 60p is just incredible. In their camea tilts you see absolutely no degredation in image quality. Matter of fact...between the 1920x1080 and the 720/60p...I can't tell the difference in resolution. What Imean is...it's just as sharp. I think someone needs to do a resolution test. But blown back up to 1920 I think the 720p is a perfect resolution to shoot in with theis camera. You can see where the 1080/24p breaks up in their tilt example.

Well, yeah. If you think about it, it's kinda strange that SOMETHING is showing up.

Lmfao. I love this camera. So much.

Audio

Audio

it seems there is no way to monitoring the audio while recording, so how can we trust in the audio recording when using a shotgun or lavelier mic?

I think this is the only bad issue that really matters in this camera.

There will not be a DSLR with real audio controls, XLRs, meters, level controls and phantom for a long time, if ever. Photo camera engineers know nothing about audio, less than video camera engineers and they know nothing about audio.

Double system sound is the way to go if you care about your audio quality. The cheapie Zoom H4N has sound quality that blows the RED One and the HPX3700 out of the water. And it is only a $349.00 recorder. Audio quality has not been and I doubt if it ever will be a priority for any camera.

Do we know yet if the audio comes out of the audio out port live like the composite video?

If so, a headphone could be adapted to that..

I'm trying to log and transfer sonics AVCHD folder in fcp and I'm getting an error msg-

"AVCHD" contains unsupported media or has an invalid directory structure. Please choose a folder whose directory structure matches supported media.

I didn't have any trouble with Barry's AVCHD folder. Anyone got any ideas?
