The Panasonic G1HD | GH-1 Video Mode : A Real Video Mode

Wow... I'd love to see more of this. The GH-1 looks to be less contrasty out of the box than the 5Dll...and the picture is just as nice...at least more pleasing than the other cameras in these clips.

If the GH1 allows for more customization of the image in the camera menus then it might look even better.

wth any luck the GH1 will push canon to bring out something with a DX sized sensor and manual control. and 23.5p

23.776595p and 58.4p so that it is harder to figure out how much we have to incrementally speed up our footage to match 24p and 60p. They'll finally give us manual controls and no jello, but the camera will start to spew smoke and then explode after the SD card is full, just like the beginning of Mission Impossible. Oh, and the manual controls will only work in 20p mode.

Side by side: HVX200A (my favorite HVX200) gets decimated in 720 purely on image aesthetic. The technical nod (Chroma Sampling, Consistent Compression, DVCproHD in general) goes to the 200A.

But I absolutely abhor the HVX200 and HPX170 image.

This camera is a keeper. Regardless of the 1080, the 720 sells it all on it's own.

With the images I'm seeing like the 1080p frames. No HVX200 1080p mode on earth including the won I owned could do what I'm seeing. Geez a 960x540 pixel shift ccd vs 12MP large sensor. Hmm.. It's not just about res, it's also S/N ratio/Sensor design, and the HVX is a noisy beast while the GH1 is clean as glass compared to it. As well, put an adapter on a HVX and your now going down farther. While the GH1 does that look straight out since it's sensor is large from the capture.

Even Blooms 1080P short film piece, which the one we saw was generations from the original and who knows if his work flow is optimum yet; delivered an image quality that no HVX is capable. Your words also said it was an EX1 with a large sensor. Well the EX1 is way better than the HVX was. Your cool with me Kholi, and I appreciate all that your doing. However your opinions all over the place like a sugared up kid who can't stay in one spot. The first day you were comparing this to Red/EX1 now it's???? ( not good enough to film a brick wall. Those are very strong divergences. What's very frustrating, is there is a no constancy with your opinions, it's all over the place. Is there a chance you camera is defective?

I believe Kholi was very clear about his opinion, GREAT in 720p, not so great in 1080. Motion artifacts and codec breakdowns are not to be considered lightly.
Yes the resolution seems superior, but AVCHD is most certainly inferior to DVCPROHD, if we keep the HVX200 reference.
Just my 2 cents...

PappasArts, I think as Kholi has discovered more about this camera, his initial reactions were tempered with the fact that upon closer scrutiny, the GH1 has specific faults.

I'm not too worried though, I come from the land of HDV which for some folks is completely unacceptable compared to other cameras. I'm like a Hobbit that is facing a big mad Orc. Hey, the small form factor and size of a GH1 is perfect for a Hobbit.

Your not crazy, it's quite good.

Here is the 5dMII vs the GH1.... Very interesting.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jVkZfUax_yI&feature=channel
.

The 5D2 video seems to be a tad underexposed, the GH1 videos overexposed. The GH1 shows shadow detail but the highlights on the GH1 videos look pretty blown out.

Also, I wonder what the post process was like. If they were not careful the blacks and highlights easily crush when the 0-255 range is clipped to 16-235 by the codec and the NLE. Best way to go about it is using Cineform Neo Scene. This also avoids the strange quicktime gamma problem.

Would love to see a more controlled test with more information. The results in that video contradict previous controlled experiments so I'm taking this one with a grain of salt.

the true test for me is not youtube. Even though I'm loving the look of the panny. It still does not have the 5d beat in 1080p. If someone can compare them on vimeo one can make a better distinction. youtube is just to bad to tell the magic that the 5d produces.

Nope, my Opinions are spot on. The EX-1 is a clean image, something more video like than the HVX200 was. To my eyes, anyway. The 200A is my favorite Prosumer camera.

It's still like an EX-1 with interchangeable lenses, and I have not changed that opinion. The 1080/24P is inadequate for my tastes, but at 720P it's glorious. I keep saying this, haven't changed my opinion.

You're comparing a GH-1 to a full functional prosumer camera that's built for the task. You will not win this battle FUNCTIONALLY. no VDSLR is there yet as far as the robust functionality of a REAL VIDEO CAMERA. To think so is to admit naievity in my opinion.

No, you will not be shooting much with high detail in 1080 if you're crazy about image quality. For instance:

Check that GH-1 MKii comparison. Top right corner, the overhang (green in color). Does that look like a straight line to you or jagged to hell?

Check the rooftops and compare with the MKii image. Jagged as hell.

Check the bench seat and the wires. Jagged as hell

My opinion hasn't varied at all. The MKii kills the Gh-1 in 1080 shot for shot to MY eye. @ 720/60P Uprezzed I'm willing to bet money it's a different ballgame.

So once again, and it looks like at least someone here gets what I'm saying. Like Barry Green said something similar about the HMC150 and I believe about the HVX200 series camera: It's a 720P camera in all seriousness.

The GH-1, to me, is a 720P camera. And I can see all the flaws in the world EVEN in Phillip's footage, even in the stuff posted on YouTube. You won't see it until you decide to throw it up on a 42" screen and the blocky HDV-esque compression rears it's ugly yet obvious head, but you'll see it. Especially you, Pappas.

Go check Hunter's slow-mo footage. Right now it's by far the best example I've seen posted as far as image quality goes. Why?... Because Hunter's bad-ass and the footage originated in 720/60P.

I haven't changed my opinion one bit: the GH-1 is like an EX-1 with interchangeable lenses @ 720/60P.

I dunno how I couldn't have been more clear about how I'm seeing it, but I'm glad that someone understands this.

I'm also willing to accept, and hope, that I have a faulty camera. It's not like I lose anything if I do, I only stand to gain because right now I've never been more satisfied with a camera than the GH-1 in 720/60P.

Please, inquire with Barry Green and most people on these boards about my insatiability sub RED ONE.

I'm telling everyone right now, personally-- at the moment-- I really couldn't be more please with the GH-1 in 720/60P. I'm a happy camper and only sad because my GH-1 is with a friend and all I'm left with is the RED. =T

1080 for 1080 the MKii wins. Camera for Camera the GH-1 wins. While MKii owners are [mostly] happy waving their camera around and tricking it to get a proper image...

Gh-1 owners press a few buttons... just like they did with their Prosumer cameras.

Call me lazy.

Oh and you remember that basketball footage you shot with the HVX200 when you first got it?

I dare you to try that in 1080/24P on the GH-1. Let me know how the detail turns out.

yeah, i threw it up on my 42" 1080p tele and loved it. Loved all of the footage so far. And that's compressed for web, so I can only imagine how much better it could be if it were output for BD. But, to be fair, I can't compare it to an Ex1-RED-HVX. Hunter's looked great too, all but the pink breaking up. I'm totally satisfied with what the 1080p can do and probably will like the 720p just as much, if not more.

Indeed it will. I'm just letting Pappas know that he might be missing my point. Hope it sticks this time, but for me: I won't be using 1080/24P from this camera.

Just consider it's because of RED. If you come from an HV20 camp then you're probably more than happy with what you're seeing. And I'm not complaining, I've already made peace with the 1080/24P and you haven't ever read me say "This camera sucks because of this or that!"

I'm fine with the 720/60P. Repeat: Your mileage will probably vary.

This is why I'm sticking with my HVX200+Adapter combo. Not because the GH1 isn't better, but its just not THAT much better. We are definitely going to see revolutionary cameras coming up in the upcoming months- the Scarlet and Canon's Rumored Cmos based Prosumer camera, for example- so its just absurd to jump into somethingthat's full of compromises right now. Of course, absurd if you don't need a camera right now. I can see the GH1 being an excelent film school cam, for example.

Kholi,

Thanks for clarifying on my points that I was addressing in that post. It answers plenty.

Since it's a true 720/60P camera; Can you flag the 60P frames to 24fps?
