The Panasonic G1HD | GH-1 Video Mode : A Real Video Mode

Latterly, the only thing I can read is somthing about aliasing + stair stepping of the GH1. Hey Nikon, make it better with the D400... or whatever ;-)

Yeah, ydgmdlu, it's the video capabilities what I'm aiming for.
It just seems that Jello™. is gone with the GH1 and that is soooo attractive.

of course :P

Its pretty obvious the gh1 would be blown away by stills. but so far the HD video blows the other cams away.

Please someone tie me up :Drogar-Kriz(DBG):, I'm about to buy that D5000 but it seems that the gh1 is meant for better things...

I know this is not a help group like AA but hey... ever had that feeling I'm going through right now?

(Btw, joined a year ago and this is my very first post).

Cheers!

are you insane?

have you not read how we've struggled with the D90?

wanna buy my D90?

My observation from phillips downloaded clip. Image is incredible. very smooth organic. Not quite the image of the 5d, but the manual controls, filmic look, filmic motion, and the panasonic color mojo makes up for the smaller sensor. not crazy about the 17mb, but for this price range there is probably nnot a video camera that will have this look without a cumbersome 35mm adapter.

I truly believe the 35mm adapter salers sales may have just plumited, and they will be looking to congress for a bailout. but because this 35mm adapters are on life support no bailouts will be given.

So I say welcome to a great script, great lighting, composition, cheap indi tools, and a wave of indi filmakers who can finaly see there vision unfold at a fraction of what it cost just last year to get the quality you will now begin to see.

Guess what: I was at a Darty store in Les Halles and the salesman was so happy I was going to buy the D90 (1149,00 €) , then for I don't know what reason the card does not work, we tried several times and he finally asks, would you make a cheque ?
I say, sorry man I've left them home... all I can see is his frustration.

I go home... find some GH1 threads here, see some videos, I see Jello™ is not really an issue and boom! I'm suddenly thinking I shouldn't go anywhere near D5000/90

If that card had worked I'd be thinking hm... it is quite skewy/shaky isn't it? hmmmm....

Maybe the GH1 only uses the whole width of its sensor at the wide end? This would explain the more noticeable aliasing at the wide end.

Looking at the figures, 4352 x 2448 is a PITA to resample considering the 'native' 1920 x 2 resolution is not far off. Cropping the sensor to 3840 is equivalent to crop factor 2.1, most people would not notice it anyway, maybe only at the wide end. I could well imagine GH1 saves the processing power of resampling as soon as the crop factor 2.1 doesn't limit the FOV relative to the max width (corp factor 1.9).

Testing this would be easy, and the effective FOV needs to be verified anyway. Just take a grid paper (or any perfect grid pattern), fix the camera (tripod, table, etc) snap a still in 4:3, 16:9, grab a frame at 1080 and 720. Repeat this 14mm and say 100mm.

The other aspect is the doctoring the Venus engine does to stills. Vignetting correction didn't make it to video, but as others have suggested, maybe distortion correction did. If this aliasing turns up in any 3rd party lens, we'll know distortion correction is not the culprit.

Btw, IMHO if Kholi's samples shows this phenomenon at its worst, it's a non-issue for me. I'm far more interested in how the shadows can be lifted before being crushed by the encoding.

Solare, I wouldn't dismiss the still photo capabilites of the GH1 either. Not as nice as a D90/D5000 but nothing to sneeze at. Plus as is already well documented, you can use practically any lens you have that covers the 4/3 sensor with some adapter.

dadoboy I've sold my D80 recently, I hope I can get something as good, but right now I'm concentrating more on the video aspect of things.

So far what I've seen is that the D90, D5000 and T1i or EOS 500D or whatever they want to call it, suck as badly when it comes to wobbly video.

T1i AKA EOS 500D

For the price of a lens adapter this is gonna be one nice camera. Will it have its annoying little issues like the other cameras? Looks like it, so far for me the image i've seen can't touch the 5d...then again the 5d has a long lineage of being a great still camera which is what it is in the first place. I wasn't too impressed with stills I looked at on flickr from the last lumix slr incarnation so it made me wonder. So far i'm keeping my 5d and still grabbing the gh1. I've given up on perfection and just enjoy watching this technology unfold. I think Caro said that the age of adapters was coming to an end and I jumped all over him...guess who is relishing his plate of crow pie wit whip cream? These cams are sweet issues aside.

I will be doing the same thing...the GH1 will be a nice addition for my artistic short films...not a replacement for anything.

Gosh. Wish I had money to burn like that. I'm scraping to pull the resources for the GH1 only.
I remember scraping together loot for the DVX, your gonna have a camera that's thirty times better IMHO. And don't get me wrong it hurts when I purchase these cameras...but i'm and addict, I guess it's better than crack though :)

Lol. True. Enjoy your toys!

I'm awake I'm awake....

Okay, all things considered, while the aliasing gets my goat, when viewed straight out of my PStripla (PS3, Playstation 3) to a 42" 1080P Samsung HD LCD, I can't really see it.

That doesn't mean it doesn't exist, It just means it's not a MAJOR issue, but I'd like to see it corrected in the near future.

With that said, I still await my Contax and Nikon adapters arrival and I'll move on from this aliasing thing to wrap up my personal lessons with this camera.

Just got a few more things to figure out, namely ISO performance in Lowlight and Daylit atmospheres. Which ISO nets the most highlight retention in broad daylight and which one works the best for lowlight. How's it effected in post? Brigning up light levels in Color or vice versa.

Also, Which Color Gamma/Setting produces the best "range" in video mode, which one effects Aliasing the most and how's about sharpening in camera then a blur fix in post? I wouldn't mind doing that, as soft is okay with me. Just not extremely soft.

Also, I really got used to the Auto Focus abilities of this camera. This thing, with the kit lens or the 7-14, will really rock hardcore for Documentary Work, in addition to Narrative, Event, Music Video as well.

Hell, the damned thing has a setting to track ANIMALS, man.

The Auto Focus is so snappy and accurate, there's SEVERAL different ways to employ it, just wow.

I never really thought I'd be a fan of Auto Focusing at all but the facial recognition and tracking in video mode offers an entirely new and fun way to One-Man-Band a shoot. And it's pretty damned neat to see people's names popping up on the screen as the camera recognizes faces.

I'm re-sold yet again.

Hey all, I'm another one of the lurkers of this thread emerging from the shadows.

Quick question about the camera's facial recognition / focusing abilities: say you have two people programed into the GH1. One person is in the foreground, the second person walks into the background. Is there a way to have it switch focus from one to the other on demand?

THAT is a GREAT question. For reference, last night I tested myself and the girl and it picked up both of our faces. The cool thing is that you can rearrange the priority of saved faces, so that if you want someone else to take precedence over the other in the frame, it'll focus on that person FIRST.

However, I think that there may be a way to literally switch which one is important WHILE you're recording. Another thing that's cool is that if you adjust the frame and the first person isn't so predominant in the frame, it automatically moves to the second person in line.

There's a whole MESS of Auto Focus capabilities that I'm just now beginning to scratch. I'm sure an English Manual will unlock them all, I'm winging it here but gettin' the hang of it.

It doesnt' feel as "natural" as someone actually pulling focus, mostly because the camera continues to correct focus, so you can see it pulsate at times, but it will surely do the job if you need to employ it.
