The Panasonic G1HD | GH-1 Video Mode : A Real Video Mode

my standards may be little higher coming from RED footage on a shoot-to-shoot basis.

I swear you're coming off as bipolar. One minute its the greatest thing since sliced bread and the next you can't even shoot a brick wall! (No offense meant.)

But I'm just taking comfort that you're comparing it to RED. Lacking as compared to RED is great. I should think that you get better footage for paying 15 times as much!

What? I SAID 1080/24 is useless to me already. That hasnt' changed. It's a 720/60P camera and it's incredible at 720/60. My opinion surely has NOT changed. I'm sorry if me saying 1080/24P is crap on this camera is scaring the hell out of people but I'm not about to just post HAPPY MUSINGS ON CAMERA THINGS MUCH LIKING TO YOU.

It's useless for me to even report on my findings if I can't tell you what I see.

It pretty much IS the greatest thing since sliced bread... if you use it in 720/60P.

I'm not comparing it to ANYTHING at all, either. Here is exactly what I said:

But even then, I guess-- as it's been pointed out to me-- my standards may be little higher coming from RED footage on a shoot-to-shoot basis.
Translations: That means SOMEONE SAID I MIGHT BE TOO HOOKED INTO RED FOOTAGE AND IT'S AWESOMENESS and that I may be too hard on 1080/24P from this camera.

Stop taking my posts out of context and we'll all be fine.

EDIT HERE: And please remember, just because I think that 1080/24P isn't up to snuff on this camera, not even by HVX200 standards, doesn't mean other people won't love it to death. It's just what I've found. Give it a few weeks and you'll be able to decide for yoruself.

The General Public gets their hands on it:
"What the hell is wrong with this? Look at this -- this is awful. Look at this intolerable issue ("noise", "split screen", "jello", "skew", "rolling shutter", "vignetting", whatever). Canon/JVC/Panasonic/Red/Sony, HOW could you DO THIS to us? We should start a class-action lawsuit.

Hilarious. This "phase" reminds me of Veruca Salt from Willy Wonka: "Daddy, I want a golden ticket! Daddy, I want an Oompa Loompa! Daddy, I want a flying glass elevator!!!"

We're all a bunch of whinners!!!

I understood that you were saying I'm bipolar when I havent' changed my mind or feelings about anything. Either you took my post out of context, seeing as how you only quoted a portion of what I said, or you're misunderstanding something.

I haven't changed my mind on anything: the camera, to me, is a 720/60P camera. The 1080/24 can't handle much more than static shots and even static shots with high detail turn to mush to me.

That's me, that's from taking my time running it through the ringer, if you discover something different when you get the camera then that'll be awesome and I'll try what you did to see if I can make it work.

Right now, even 720/60P > 23.98 is even easier than dealing with pulldown in the 1080/24, which makes it that much more awesome to me. Mileage will vary.

Hi Kholi, I'm currently using an HVX201AE (the PAL equivalent to the 200A I believe) both for short fiction films and for events (including weddings).
For fiction, I usually end up using a Brevis and Nikon glass (but I don't like the added difficulty to focus using the lcd and it also hampers my mouvements).
Considering those parameters, would the GH1 be better, similar or worse ?
Could it replace my HVX, or would I be losing more than I gain?
My biggest fear are the codec issues (I really like DVCPROHD, a very solid codec thats reacts kindly to color grading/correction) - AVCHD looks a bit frightening to me...

Looking forward to seeing your test footage and awaiting your full review.

Hi, since you seem to have good knowledge of both cameras, i'd be interested in knowing your thoughts concerning my dilemma (I allways shoot 720p on the HVX anyway)
I'm asking, because it would seem the GH1 in 720p25 would be even better than my HVX (which I find hard to believe, but I WANT to believe...)

That´s a clear statement. I put it on my list :-)

Don't trade a full manual tool for one that isn't if your bread and butter relies on it.

Just buy one to go with the camera if you can afford it. As much as I love the GH-1 I'm not going to sell my HPX170 and Adapter Combo.

I believe that the best way to judge a camera is to take it in your very own hands and give it the good old tests drive. As to gain extra information I also like to see some actual footage done by knowledgable individuals and read the reviews. The ultimate descion on the usability of camera or not always lies on my final experience with it. You can't really live your life thru others.

Make sure you quote it as an opinion, not a fact. I noticed that you posted a lot of what looked like facts in another thread and they're completely non factual.

Just clearing that up.

Exactly. Once you guys get it in your hands I implore you to find out what it does for you.

I'm not a fan of being limited with a camera in my hands. I don't want to have to avoid trees because it might look bad. I'm also not a fan of having to lock down many shots, either.

But for others, this is probably just fine. Just my personal standpoint: if I can't move the camera or I have to avoid certain situations it's still too limiting for my personal tastes. It's a good thing the 720/60P is glorious.

I keep posting that it's my opinion and what I see. I keep saying mileage will vary. I don't know how else I can male it clear that this is my opinion but not fact.

Thats a pretty interesting assertion but again we will find out for ourselves when we shell out the $1500.00. One thing I don't think is very practical with any camera is to start whipping the camera left and right up and down like maniacs to prove anything, unless of course your expect your scripts to call for it, and thats not very often. Otherwise you pan or you track smoothly in a way your viewer can follow the action properly. Thats why I don't worry much about skew.

It looks a lot better but an instantHD test should confirm.

For straight 720 the aliasing definitely is more pallatable to me eyes when scrubbing frame by frame.

Ah ha. I tried those links off the re-post and they were dead. Off the original post I was able to download the train material.

I'm going to watch them on the big screen later and post my opinion on the "Straight from the Gh1 to your door" thread. It's true, 1080 vs 720 discussions in this omnibus thread are getting swallowed up and lost with everything else.

Wait so you have the camera or you're looking at raw footage from the camera that's been posted?

I know I keep saying soon but I'll have it all lumped into one solid post/article.

And look, if I'm freaking anyone out about the 1080/24 here please remember that I am just ONE person. I have different tastes, etc. I'm crazy, as well. My diet is like Orange Juice and Donuts so you can't trust me.

What I will say is that if my insane idea that 1080/24 Doesn't hold up well actually bleeds over into the US release, it's NOT a bad thing!

The 720/60P AVC-HD from this cam is outright GLORIOUS. The 720/30P MJPEG is really nice, much better than I had ever expected or had first glanced.

A Robust 720 is good enough to go anywhere, theatrical, web, DVD, Blu Ray, Broadcast. Everywhere.

If you were to happen to ever actually need more than 720 then you InstantHD the footage. InstantHD is incredible, does a great job.

I mean, the HVX200/A/HPX170 all shot 1080/24. It undoubtedly netted a bit more detail in high frequency situations. How many people actually use 1080/24P out of the HVX200???

Again, I'm probably wrong and I'm banking on something being changed in the US release. The 720/60P is still incredible and I'm still awed that 1500.00 gets you this kind of quality.

Well...so far it seems like out of the 4 people with the cam you are the hardest on the 24p/1080 footage. But you did say our mileage will vary so maybe Phillip, Hunter or our other friend in Japan has other opinions about it. It's all good.
