The Official "Next Fest" Idea Submission Thread

I think that its probably going to wind up being either Revenge/Forgive or Crime (just because they seem the most popular)... between those two, I'd probably have to go with Crime.... however, I don't know if the idea I currently have for it actually fits. I mean, for crime, technically, if you have a guy J-walk in the beginning of the film, and then goes on and finishes whatever the story is, it is technically still crime-related. If its broad, the idea I have for it already will probably fit.

I think we should go back to crimefest. that was popular when we were voting between that and questfest and it can get popular again and that it can fit the horror since halloween will be coming along. And I don't know if I can do a two-theme revenge/forgive but I can do crime so I change my vote to crime.

Disasterfest could be fun.

The fests seem to run in 3 major genres. Jan, charatcer driven. Summer, action and Winter, Horror/supernatural. So I would probably be suprised to see crimefest or revengefest this time round.

Maybe we're running out of broad strokes for the fests and they might end up becoming too specific which Im sure the mods dont want. Maybe the Oct fest should just be called HalloweenFest, ActionFest for the summer and SomethingElseABitMoreCharacterDrivenFest for Jan.

But then again it is fun to speculate. So... I prefer Disasterfest simply because it doesnt dictate the content, only the scenario. Something like revenge/forgivenessfest is more specific about how the story is structured which isnt traditionally what they've done.

Agree with this post ^^

I think that revenge/forgiveness allows the filmmaker to make one of two movies... because if you think about it, revenge and forgiveness basically dictate the major plot points of a film.

Revenge:
Key incident: Someone does something to the protagonist
Plot point 1: Protagonist decides to do something about it.
Struggle: Protagonist works out how they will get even.
Plot point 2: Protagonist fails in attempt but then gives it another shot or tries differently.
Climax/End: Revenge works or backfires

Forgiveness
Key incident: Someone does something to the protagonist
Plot point 1: Protagonist decides to do something about it.
Struggle: Protagonist works out how they will get even.
Plot point 2: Protagonist either fails in attempt or sees the antagonist in a different light.
Climax/End: Protagonist turns new leaf and forgives the antagonist.

Of course, antagonist and protagonist can be flipped in either of those and you pretty much wind up with 4 spines for every single entry. That's my main buff with the revenge/forgiveness idea... or anything dealing with either of them. Things like TimeFest, HeroFest, QuestFest, HallowsFest, etc. had nothing do with structure of the story. I mean, Questfest was insanely broad-- the requirement is described as "Your protagonist wants something and has to endure challenges to get it." -- which is the basic description of developing any character for any movie ever made. I think we need to be thinking of themes that involve a greater spectrum of plot possibilities-- even CrimeFest (while I like the idea) is a bit tight and probably most of the ideas for it could be placed in other broader fest themes.

edit:
Some other ideas which are broader (trying to fit fall themes here):

FEARfest: Anything dealing with phobias, or something that incites fear...etc.

MONSTERfest: Anything dealing with a beast, monster, or creature. Could range from a sci-fi where a man slowly transforms into a fly creature after a teleportation accident -- to a horror about something lurking in the woods -- to a drama about a man who has become a "monster" over years of cruel behavior -- to a comedy about a household appliance gone wild. Obviously this could deal with famous monsters too... vampires, werewolves, zombies, ghosts, etc.

I sure hope that we see a poll pretty soon.... it seems like there is less enthusiasm about next fest than there usually is. There isn't even a thread devoted to it in the current fest forum. Maybe its just me. Anyway, I had to miss out on this most recent one because of other obligations but I'm itching to be a part of this one.

Unfortunately I might have to miss it because I have two projects I'm starting at the moment and I don't know if I will have the time. :(

Because it would be around Halloween time I'm digging:

Revenge/ForgivnessFest or RetributionFest
FearFest
and yes MonsterFest sounds cool (could be tough to do right though)

All though... Christmas/Holidays are also around then... Could be fun to do Christmas movies...

Monsterfest is a pretty good one! I guess that could include ghosts, zombies, boogeymen, whatever... I like it.

As for the interest in the next fest. I'm not sure, traditionally the fall fest has been really popular.... I havent counted but the turnout of Questfest seems to be a bit lower than what we've had before. I wonder if that's due to either people just sitting out this time, or whether the whole pitch idea put some people off from entering? For me, it was just resources. Everyone has been too busy to help.

I really want to enter the next one, but my biggest problem im crap at writing 6 min shorts, everything I structure seems to have 3 reversals and becomes too big.. waaaa

Hey darkline, if your interested in directing someone elses writing-- I could lend you my services for whatever this next fest is. I have a pretty quick turn around time for scripts and, without bragging, I'd have to say that I'm a pretty decent writer. Anyway, I'm guessing that I won't be able to direct a project for this upcoming fest (due to other obligations) but I'd love to write something and after seeing your work on Broadcast, I'm sure it would be in great hands. Let me know if you want to work something out (I write for free haha... send me a PM). :Drogar-BigGrin(DBG)

Cheers KOHR,

I thought Paired was very well written! Well, I have maybe 3 ideas for the next fest depending on what suits best. I may try to hack them and get them down to 6 minutes (Ive just done another screenwriting class so Im eager to put what I've learnt into action), but I for sure would be happy to take any advice you had on my drafts, if willing... drop me a PM and we'll chat.

anyway, back to Monsterfest or Disasterfest. :-D

I guess we wont have a teaser vote this time. Shame as it would allow us to put our thinking hats on a few days early.

Well, if we aren't going to have an official vote... I'm saying MonsterFest is my pick overall. Its definitely broad enough and doesn't dictate the genre or structure of any entry. It fits the seasonal theme.... and I think it demands creative output for people to either avoid the trite monster stories or to put a surprising twist on them to make them more interesting.

MonsterFest:
1
Bad guys: 0

Monsterfest is definitely the most intimidating to me, but also the most appealing and exciting, and the one that I would most like to see 50 or so variations on, just to see where people go with it. Let's make it happen!

I have a feeling MonsterFest would attract a lot of viewers and not so much people willing to actually create a short. It seems almost too restricted.
