The official "I got my AF100" thread

Ups just came knocking on the studio door… what a pleasant surprise. Client doesn't understand why we keep circling the box - crew seems to think that maybe we'll have a beer after wrap and fire this thing up.

Wicked! Let me know if you're up for an easy shoot next wednesday. I'll be looking for a second shooter with an AF100. The client wanted to go 5D but they said they would go Panasonic if I cold get a second camera.

I'm all ears!

Better charge up the battery then....and what time is beer time? I am on my way!

Patience is a virtue they say. Yours must have been sorely tested. Congrats and enjoy.

Bummer, my camera is the next town over in the UPS shipping facility and will not get here today because of adverse weather conditions....See you tomorrow af-100

Yeah, same here. My camera was actually on the FedEx delivery truck to be delivered today after being delayed by Wednesday's weather (understandable), then I got an e-mail at 8:30 PM saying there was a weather exception. Don't know why - perfectly clear today and the streets were clear and plowed, but whatever. Hopefully it'll make it early tomorrow so I don't waste another day waiting around the house. ::grumble::

I've officially joined the ranks of the new proud AF100 owners!

My Impressions: First two days.
*these are just my personal opinions

DSC_2658.jpg

with Nikkor 70-200 f2.8 VR, Novoflex Adapter, Redrock FF, Redrock Rig, Shoot35 Gears,

1) Took way too long to arrive -- 92 days.

2) Might not be very important but the packaging was sparse. Think opposite of Apple packaging.

3) It's very small and very light weight - This is 50%-75% lighter and smaller than the previous 35mm adapter rig.

4) Plasticky. Though it is built very well, many buttons and panelling felt and sounded a bit hollow.

5) Pretty much all manual controls. There are some auto features but they are invalid because how I set mine up. I say good riddance to auto controls!

6) Love the enormous top handle.

7) Love the look of the thing.

8) Built in Waveform monitor!

9) I was used to Variable WB on the Canon XHA1 and am very happy to find it here.

10) Under and Overcranking in full HD. Terrific.

11) Shutter speed and sensor sensitivity in Degrees and ISO in FILM mode. I like.

Still reading Barry's book. A terrific read! I'm also waiting for a memory card -- image testing to follow.

I found the packaging very impressive - we don't need to send endless packaging garbage to landfill, just to make us feel good about unboxing our purchase. REDUCE is the first 'R'

To me, the materials were typical. Also it was a box within a box within another box which I thought was a bit wasteful. There was a lot of room inside that they could have shunk down.

Now apples packaging, they are small and efficient at saving space. The materials are also good -- I always save their packaging, they never get to
Landfills.

Again, packaging is a mute topic when compared to the meat and potatoes.

Just arrived today having had Barry's book for two weeks so ready to go. First impression is that there seems to be so much for so little. Yes it's plastic etc but with the fact that we need to change formats so often compared to the old days and of course money is tight so it has to be the way to go. Will be using it mainly for SDOF interviews to start with. Nikon lenses + adaptor is the planned route although the 7-14 wide lens will be used for a regular production and save big hire and transport costs of Digibeta B4 very wide lens.

In between prepping for a shoot on Monday, I was able to play a little bit with the camera in the studio this afternoon. Didn't really shoot anything, I was just trying to figure out where to hang stuff…

I'll start shooting some tests tomorrow and Sunday, with the first paying gig for this camera just over a week away - a 5 day shoot that will make the af100 feel like a well worn glove.

Now if only the second one would show up...
