The new Nikon D4

Some additional nice features, I think not mentioned yet:
  • Low-pass filter for video recording
  • Smooth aperture feature for video recording
Moiré-free and with smooth aperture? Wow...

It seems they did everything right. This is as much a video camera as a DSLR can be. Sure, somewhen will appear the weak points but...

Yup. Heres the PDF brochure, it mentions the OLPF for "reduced false color and moire"

It's looks like Nikon got sick and tired of people asking when are they going to release a camera that can compete with the big boys. With the Canon 1DX and the Nikon D4 having impressive video capabilities, I'm hoping it wont be long until we see a 5DMIII or D800 with similar video specs.

5d for sale : )

Better sell it fast. There could be a lot of them for sale.

I've been hanging for Nikon to get their act together ever since I got the D90. Nikon trounce Canon when it comes to skin tones, DR, filmic grain/high ISO. Their DSLR pictures just look more analog. HDMI out straight to prores, now we're talking. Bring on the D8000!

The D800 is rumoured to be 32 megapixels so it's unlikely to be amazing in low light and moire and aliasing could be an issue too.

Err, being a Nikon camera... Canon Glass wont work (I hope you went joking asking that question, or id feel pretty lame)
You could possibly find an adaptor that'll allow for other glass. But seriously, ive not heard much about people using Canon glass for Nikons. Its usually about adapting Nikon glass for Canons....

According to the UK press release sensor output is 1080i. Dan Cheung has a write up about this and says ..

At this stage all I know is that the signal is a 1080i one that supposedly outputs at 8 bit at 4:2:2. I do know that Nikon have demonstrated this working with an Atomos Ninja external HDMI recorder

No.. I didn't go joking. But I did go fishing:)

Sorry to make you feel lame, I would hate to make anyone fel like a horse with a bad leg :)

I wasn't joking... I have never owned Nikon anything, so I really don't know what they can take in the way of glass. I do know you can use Nikon glass on Canon, because I infact own a t3i.
In the future, I will think before asking such a stupid lame question. Sorry. In the meantime, you might want to get that leg checked out.:)

Hey, in case you missed it...the low pass filter is OPTICAL. Someone here had wondered if it was software. Looks like it's optical. Oooo....aaaaaahhhhh....looking good!

I don't expect Canon to ever include HDMI clean out on their cams. Nikon can do things Canon can't because they don't have some big video line to protect the interests of. Nikon can put all the bells and whistles on without fear. :P

Looking forward to seeing people get their hands on them!

I agree with one exception. (And this is a big "if"...)

If Nikon makes a "big splash" over the next 18 months or so with this feature in several of these cams and the market "buys into" Nikon DSLRs for video....Canon will have to ask themselves if it's more important to protect their high end video market, or protect their market "at large". (against a surging Nikon) Now....there are A LOT of "if's" in there....and it's WWAAAAAYYYYY to early to tell. But if Canon doesn't quit messing around with leaving features out, folks are going to "catch up"....and people like me are going to cross over.

The thing for us all to celebrate here is that Nikon is adding features that we've all wanted and needed and look forward to using and enjoying their evolution. (I'm not worried if this version is "perfect" or not.....they're on the right path and will eventually figure it out....) And all of this is BOUND to put pressure on the other manufacturers to step up or lose customers.

Cheers!

The 1DX is dead. Pull it, Canon and revamp it before you embarass yourself in the market place. I want to see the D4 track focus while recording before I get my hopes up. I've got alot of nice L glass. I really hope Canon gets their act together soon.

The upcoming Canon 4K cinema DSLR needs to be this and more. It should be quite something. Before anyone jumps on the D4 bandwagon, they should wait for Canon's cinema DSLR. If canon drops the ball on that, screw them.

No kidding. I've been with canon since I had a A1 and F1, and never once considered Nikon. I'm now considering Nikon. If canon is smart they'll just throw caution to the wind and and load up the T4i and completely suck the wind out of the sails of Nikon as far as video features are concerned.

Am I the only one who's a bit disappointed about D4's video image? Even though crappy youtube and probably some unfavorable in-camera settings I had somehow expected to see a different/better looking image, something like a hacked GH2 resolution with full frame and Nikon mojo and DR improvements.
It basically looks like D3s with slightly higher resolution, I honestly expected more.
I'll wait for some non pre-production camera, HDMI recorded, downloadable footage.

EDIT: On the other hand, they say that, at least in 2.7x crop mode, it records pixel by pixel 1920x1080. Compression (130MB for 7 min) plus stinky youtube must have really really washed away a lot of resolution and probably some other things too.
