Instead of merely capturing the Scarlet and C300 market, perhaps Sony is aiming too, at the Alexa. With ARRI's impressive ability to record 12 bit ProRes4444 files to SxS pro cards perhaps Sony figured out a profitable way to do the same.
This would be incredibly appealing to me. And I wouldn't need 4K, I'd be very satisfied with scaling down from a 3.5K sensor to 2K.

Keep S-Log, add high speed, a competitive price point, and I'm in.

Super bonus: a 4:3 sensor that windows down to 16:9 so I can have the option to shoot with anamorphic lenses. And an optical viewfinder : )

C'mon, I was pretty close.

Nice work Sony: "The F5 excels, with an impressive 14 stops of exposure latitude, extraordinary low-light sensitivity and extremely low noise in the blacks. The result? Graceful rendering of scene contrast, even in searing sunlight."

[h=1]More than I hoped for:

Ultra wide color gamut[/h] Sony believes that your camera should not limit your color palette. That’s why the F55 incorporates the same advanced color filter array technology as used in Sony’s flagship F65, which is equipped with the industry’s only 8K sensor.* You get a color gamut that’s not only wider than other digital cameras. It’s even wider than motion picture print film.
* As of September 2012.

It's probably worth noting that not only are these cameras not slated to be available until February, but most of the bigger, higher-end features are noted as *expected as a future upgrade. Sony's FS700's 4k feature which was similarly noted at its announcement has still not materialized or even been mentioned since release, so who knows if or when some of those features may come about...

I will be a bit surprised if MSRP on either of these cameras is <$20k... And I'd be surprised if the F55 is priced lower than EPIC-X. Should be interesting.

Noah, where did you find the release dates?

As an Epic owner, sincerely, this announcement doesn't make me at all concerned or "envious" (Ok, a little bit on the low light). Raw needs an optional recorder, frame rates need "future updates" (where's the FS700 4K update?), in the case of the F5, the only "affordable", non PL mount is the FZ mount- as a canon still lens user, the Red Canon mount is just absolutely brilliant, even better than the one on the C300 in Functionality...

Add to that, the Red Workflow now works well, the system is proven. Lets see, competition is good, and this can only mean good things for the costumer in the future!

Actually, the AXS-R5 2K/4K RAW recorder for the F5/55 is also the 4K recorder for the FS700, via a new interface adapter, according to the Sony press release.

What's the interface adapter since the FS700 as I understand it only has a single 3G SDI link?

What about the global shutter?

But the thing is that the Sony's have all those rich flavors to record in. HD, 2k, q4k, 4k, raw2k, raw4k and and ND FILTER! You will be able to buy an F5 and just go HD, then get the recorder if you please and slap it on the back. I bet the camera will record 4k and HD422 8bit creating proxies on the fly. RED has their module, sure, but at a cost. How much again for a 1TB of RED cards? Sony just kicked RED in the balls!

Sony just kicked RED in the balls!

Sony has announced a couple of great sounding cameras - to be sure. Both of these sound like something I'd love to shoot with.
But until they release 5K raw on board in a package the size of an Epic at frame rates up to 96fps complete with swappable smart lens mounts, I don't think anyone has gotten kicked in the balls.

The market is definitely growing, competition is heating up a bit... and all of this is great for us (the users) - but I don't see a 'death blow' here.
(especially considering we don't know the pricepoint yet).
Just my 2 cents.
