The New F

Big fan is better, small fans have to run at high rpms and produce high noise to be half as useful...

Then again, no fan is best. Looks like the fan is only on the R5 RAW recorder.

No legit mention of prices yet? I wonder if Sony's gonna play this hardball -- no prices until tomorrow... think about it, Red already committed to announcing their prices tomorrow. So now Sony's announced their cameras, but do they HAVE to announce prices today? Maybe Sony can force Red to go through with their price reduction while not knowing ANYTHING about what Sony's actually going to price these at...

That would be kinda funny actually.

I don't think that's Sony's style. Same thing happened last year, Canon announced C300 with no pricing, Red announced Scarlet and a bunch of accessories with pre and post Xmas pricing.

Yup I was just thinking the same thing. They say in salary negotiations the first person to
say a number loses. Maybe Sony will want to make Red say a number first......

Supposedly the new Sony "PL" lenses only work on Sony cameras:

"I work at a rental house called Tamberelli Digital in Manhattan. We purchased a set of these lenses a few weeks ago with one of our PMW-F3 cameras because they seemed like a good solution for clients who can’t afford to rent more expensive glass. It turns out, however, that these Happy Meal lenses only work on Sony cameras, despite their claim as “PL mount” lenses. The ears on the PL mount are larger than those on an Ultra Prime, and so they wouldn’t fit on our Canon 7D with FGV PL modification, our AF100 with Hot Rod adapter, or our Alexas. They slide right onto our F35 though."

If true, the Sony history of proprietary parts continues.

It sounds quite clearly as if he's talking about the first gen lenses released with the Sony F3. It is a known issue that the flanges on those lenses have issue on some PL mounts. I think it's fair to think Sony may have addressed this in making this second gen set.

I don't think that's Sony's style.

Perhaps, but I would go so far as to say that making a camera that people actually want to buy, with all the stats people want, and actually listening to the customer and building what the customer wants, and pricing it competitively, sure haven't been Sony's style either! :D

As Jim says, "Everything is subject to change." Maybe (hopefully) they've changed for the better, in lots of ways.

Same thing happened last year, Canon announced C300 with no pricing
Well, they did actually announce "a" price, Canon announced it would be "under $20,000". So not quite the same thing.

I would wait if I were Sony. They have nothing to gain by having a price yet. Better wait until the day after Reds price announcement. That would put a laugh on my face atleast :0

This quote is out of context. I'm pretty sure that the glass they're referring to are the F3 Cinema Housed Primes which were made of plastic. Not the new Cooke Designed lenses, which are completely redesigned and PL standard.

The old lenses had a strange PL mount flange that didn't quite fit into any other PL mount, requiring things to be machined.

The new lenses? Not the case... by a long shot.

Where is everyone getting this Cooke thing? This rumor is a wildfire.

That quote is out of context. He is talking about the three primes released with the F3... the crappy ones where more focal lengths were promised but none delivered.

Everyone always wants to rumor Cooke. Remember when the original Red Pro lenses were rumored to be Cookes, until Cooke said "NO THEY ARE NOT."

I had also heard the original Sony lenses were supposed to be Zeiss, but that definitely wasn't the case.

I actually don't know if they're Cooke but I do know that they're a complete redesign and not based on the other trio.

All metal, etc.

Yep. My money is on the F55, unless it is exorbitantly priced.

I think people are underestimating how much fun 10bit, 300mbps 4K with SLOG2 will be... recorded in a fan-less package, presumably without great power consumption.

10bit DPX film scans offer AMAZING grading latitude if the source is good. And this should be pretty close.

Just hoping the skin tones are somehow as nice as film... nah, probably not going to happen :(

Yes. That is true. They (Sony) seemed to have taken a new direction.

However, as I've mentioned in previous threads regarding these lenses, I really doubt Cooke has a hand in it. They can barely full-fill their $50,000-$150,000 orders within 8 months, let alone devote time to mass produce lower cost lenses. Out of the major cine-lens manufacturers, Cooke is likely the smallest, most niche of them. They don't have the resources, manpower, or facilities to devote their time to mass production of anything, as far as I can tell. They can't keep up with the demand for S4's, Panchro/i's and 5/i's, not to mention a very big source has confirmed rumors of anamorphic primes on the way.

I'd be quite shocked if they are manufacturing cheap'ish' lenses. It seems the extra effort would be much better served toward catching up with Cooke's own demand.
