The Music Licensing Chickens Have Come Home to Roost in Wedding and Event Videography

I see so many linked videos here from vimeo and youtube as well with unlicensed music beds.

A friend paid over $8k on the belief that no one will notice.

It isn't worth it, and it is appropriating some one else's artistic creation.

Thanks for the link.

Would that the USA had more modern copyright laws and licensing practices.
In some other countries, it is almost as trivial and inexpensive to acquire a sync license as it is here in the US to get a mechanical license.

I've seen this on many forums today - I just can't believe a professional wedding organisation really thought they could get away with downloading domestic music and sticking it on a website - it's illegal streaming. I love the way these type of organisations go mad when somebody copies their website style, yet see no problems with lifting a bit of music. No sympathy at all. Some of us deal honestly with copyright - some don't! No need ti feel sorry for these people at all!

FWIW, I'm the author of the blog post listed. The interview I did is a with a videographer who fully accepts responsibility for what he did and is not asking for anyone to feel sorry for him. Nor is he yelling and screaming about the record companies. I just wanted to state that for the record.

Second, copying somebody's work is not a good analogy to using music illegally. Other than they're both ethically wrong. When a videographer uses a song, they're not trying to copy the musician. They're trying to add emotion to their film. They should do it legally, for sure. But the analogy of copying isn't really the same. That's all.

Bladeronner, glad you popped into this convo. Helps to get some perspective.

Copyright Infringement is a nasty subject. Especially here. I personally am glad you spoke up about the individual in question, and headed off any argument about his motive/response.

I compose music for multimedia and I often supply music from my library for wedding videos, and I offer it very inexpensively. So there's no need for these videographers to not play it safe and hire guys like me.
