The Great Camera Shootout 2010

All these DSLRs dont show the full latitude straight out of cam, there's quite some detail hidden in the highlights that has to be brought back in post first. I wonder if they did so or only adjusted colors before comparing.

My exact question. It's amazing even in their current usable state how much detail we can bring back out in highlights. I can imagine shooting RAW.

I've seen keys tried to be pulled from both 7D and 1D Mark IV footage.

It was not pretty. And this was in a professional green screen studio.

I work at a professional commercial studio and I can say that we've pulled keys pretty successfully from 5D footage. Now, if you can afford to get a nicer camera for green screen then I'd recommend it, but you can absolutely pull decent keys from properly lit DSLR footage.

I find it interesting that all of the camera mfgs were invited to observe the tests and only Canon sent one.... Methinks this may be why Canon is owning the market.

I watched an interview with the DP from 24 on Vimeo and he also talked about how Canon reps came to observe their shooting and took TONS of feedback notes. They may be "slow to respond" as someone else mentioned, but at least they are there and making an effort.

The Panasonic guy was there too.

Ya.. I'll find the exact time. It was right when they went to the theater and said "Canon and Panasonic were there" and they showed a gentleman with gray hair and a beard (I think). I'll watch and find the exact time.

Okay.. at 7:20... "There were people from every company there... Panasonic, Fuji....."

So, Panasonic was there to screen, but not help set up.

So, .. to the comment that:

wrong.. Panasonic was indeed there to screen.

I missed that, thanks...

I wonder what they said when Bloom told them about his troubles with GH1 settings. And interesting that there were no comments shows from the Canon or Panasonic reps.

I think it made more sense to not have comments from them.

Bottom line - Pannie sees the GH1 as a consumer cam and Canon sees the 5d and 7d as pro and so all three get treated exactly as their manufacturers want them to be treated.

Blame Pannie that our beloved GH1 gets treated the way it does. They have made it quite clear that they do not want a pro tag on the GH1.

Canon does NOT see the 7d or 5d as PRO video cams btw. Errr, maybe after this video ha ha ha ha

I believe his point was that if they were at the actual shoot out maybe so many people wouldn't be dissatisfied or should I say confused about the results of the GH1 because maybe they could have sent someone who would have made sure the camera was performing at it's peak. The screening is after the fact so it really meant nothing because they were as powerless as you and I to effect what has already taken place.

True, there should have been someone like Barry at the shootout to set up the GH1. I know P. Bloom could have tweaked it right had he been using it more than he has. Actually, I don't know of a GH1 "expert" that coulda done it.

From what the shootout video showed us the only one that was there during setup was Canon. But they had no hands on and didn't interfere....even when told that off-brand lens would be used.

And ChipG...I wanted to reply with the same thing you've stated. That is...Canon does not view their cameras (with video as an afterthought) as professional products. If we are talking stills...then yeah...most definitely. I believe however...with all the hype and enthusiam behind these cameras...and Canon being shocked with all the responses behind these cameras...there will be something much better in store for future DSLRs.
