The Great Camera Shootout 2010

LOL that was hilarious, of course film is going to kick dslr ass but its going to be a fun test
way to go zacuto !

Film kicked ass but the DSLR exceeded expectations. 7D hit 11 stops out of 13. Crazy good. In 2 years DSLR and better technology will meet and they will rule unless camcorder manufactures step there game up.

Very nice. Thank you Zacuto.

Looking forward to see the resolution test, and the key should surprise many since nobody bothers to shoot green screen on them.

I've seen keys tried to be pulled from both 7D and 1D Mark IV footage.

It was not pretty. And this was in a professional green screen studio.

Guys, I am a GH1 fan too, but this is not my understanding of the situation. I believe Bloom feels that it cannot be tweaked sufficiently for his tastes. Whether he dialed down the settings at all for this test or not, I'm not sure, but I know he believes the settings can not be dialed down enough, no matter what.

EDIT: not sure why the quote function isn't giving me what want, but this is replying to Ben and Mad HMC re: what Bloom said about the GH1 settings.

That was our initial thoughts not having had a response from bloom yet. Seems he did do a little tweaking.... Its like all these cameras went to trial, and the GH1 didnt have a lawyer with proper representation :) Barry Green should have been invited !

I have never seen green screen done with a 7/5D, but I've tried to grade with keys and it is very limiting to say the lease and be kind. However, I bet it does a great job at 540p and lower, and it might be at least very decent at 720p.

What’s apparent to me is that these DSLRs each have their own strengths. For example…film holds its details no matter what…but in those light bulb shots (other than film) the 7D’s glow looked the most pleasant. More so than the 5D. How did that happen? But the 5D held on to details in the bricks better during the bathtub scene.

I always said that the GH-1, “out of the box”, has a sharp image but a lot of that is in-camera sharpening and more contrast. The Canons are able to get a much duller (flat) image at its lowest setting than the GH-1 (which is why some folks call if…dull looking when comparing it to the GH-1). But the GH-1, like one of the DP’s said, has a more “baked-in” look (in regards to its colors). That’s the Panasonic mojo that makes many of their cams look more filmic…but it’s not good for everything. And like Mr. Bloom suggested he was unable to tweak it to its full potential. I was thinking the GH-1 would have done better in the latitude dept., but I think its results had a lot to do with its codec. Still…that camera looked good and faired well in this test. I think they all did.

Also, in regards to the 7D’s latitude….wow. They got 11 stops without using Highlight Priority. After watching this last night I tested Highlight Priority once again. What I’ve found is that when using the cleaner “in-between” ISO (I had it on ISO 320)…it gave me one stop more of highlight detail without adding any noise. I’ve used it before with the native ISO’s and noticed (like some others) that it introduced noise but not when I shot it on ISO320 last night. The whites didn’t tend to look overly bright like they sometimes do without using it. Anyone else have this experience?

I just knew this thread would dissolve into a RED debate

+1

For the life of me I don't get the whole RED vs DSLR's debate. The Red ONE Body retails for $17,500. There are thousands of people who could never justify or afford this camera who can spend a little money on a DSLR. So it makes no difference to most of us if the RED is better or not. I could care less! In regards to the "Shootout" whats most important to me is that pro DP's, get a chance to see PROJECTED dslr footage and giving an honest opinion. The bottom line being that if I use this affordable tool properly it will look nice on the big screen.

Try RED Scarlet at $4750 projected price with fixed lens, RAW video, audio with phantom power, and high latitude. That is real competition to $2700 5D body, plus another $2000 in lenses, adn do not forget the external audio kit you need and the synching of sound and video required in post. Granted the the Canon has shallower DOF, and known low light capability, and most movies already use dual sound recording. However, most people are very excited about RAW editing. I have just played with it and it is startling how much more control you get of the image in post.

Here are the three problems I have:

I can't buy a Scarlet right now.
Yeah it comes with a lens built in, but what if I want to use Zeiss or Nikon?
DSLR will probably have more filmic look than a 2/3 Scarlet.

First off if you can afford 5 grand and if the RED Scarlett is available then be my guest. We went the 7D route with Nikon AI Primes total approx 2,000 dollars. I like to shoot with double system sound anyway so I already have a Sennhieser 416 and we recently purchased a Zoom H4n to replace our Fostex DAT. As far as shooting in RAW, I understand the benefits but its not worth the price that it would currently take to shoot that way.

Its nice that we have so many choices and if we can't go top of the line we can still shoot great images.

may I point out that technically the GH1 is not a DSLR as it is missing its 'reflex', however it is one from a marketing point of view.

To answer Boulder, the scarlet is not on sale yet.

lol you guys talking about item thats not available at the moment (maybe more than year)
also why didnt they include RED ONE in this contest?
