we should make a desire-listed here and send these on panasonic.
I wish myself:

- free attitude WA with the wheel from 2.800 to 6.000 Kelvin + Chroma Phase
- a marking-function for cinemascope (2.35:1)
- a matting-funtcion (black-bars) for cinemascope (2.35:1)

Yes. In fact I'm shooting today with a Sony camera that has it's 3200k preset set at 3400K. It looks better that way.

For me on a run and gun situation I'll have the a/b whites somewhere in the 3800-4600 range for mixed lighting, the 3200K for straight tungsten, and 5600 for when the producer says lets go outside and grab that shot!

Just got done doing a major sports franchise promos. We had the players for ten minutes each. No time to be changing anything!

On the film set of course you have time to shoot for perfection, but even when you don't have time you've got to give the client what they want. A lot of things are shot and taken away not edited by me so color timing everything is not possible.
It only takes one time for a new producer to look at your footage and not like the color to make them not use you again. Or an editor complain about how long it took cc your footage and you're toast with that client.

After shooting for 25 years I know this business will roll you up and smoke you if you're not careful.

Hope they fix this.

Cheers

Jan: I recommend that you or someone else do what I did.. set a 500 next to a 200, chose the 5600d factory preset, and shoot a comparison... apples and apples... (well, 2/3" apples and 1/3" apples, but still the same fruit).

Interestingly, I wrote about this cyan color the day after I received my HPX500, one of the first shipments, because as a documentary filmmaker I rely on factory WB presets a lot... There hasn't been much about it since, but now suddenly lots of people are chiming in and recognizing a problem.

Whether this color shift can be altered with firmware is something I don't know... if it doesn't have gears and sprockets I don't totally understand it... but it obviously is a problem that needs to be adressed in some form...

presets

presets

I've been servicing most of my cameras and VTR's for 25 years. I buy all the service manuals when I buy new equipment. Even my washing machine...

Now, presets are usually tweaked on a camera to camera basis at the factory. Most of the broadcast cams I buy have pretty good presets, but sometimes are
a little bit off. So, just like the tech at the factory, I put up my graystep card and
use my waveform and vectorscope to tweak the presets. It's an internal pot adjustment on the motherboard. On the newer cameras I believe some of the
tweaks can be made in a menue, but one might need the service codes to enter that menue.

So that might be the reason that cameras have different white balances.

I agree with everyone who says that the preset is worthless. All the menus on this camera mimic the HVX200 so you can use the two models together, so there's no use justifying the difference in the 5600k preset. The HVX is right and the HPX is wrong.

Also, I find setting the manual white balance on the HPX to be less reliable than the HVX. On some occasions when I know the white balance should be up around 6200k, I get a reading around 4300k. I can usually reset until I get what I want, but that is never and issue with the HVX.

Other than that, I love the camera.

I agree. Jan, Please give us an update. I don't want to see this issue fade away. There are a lot of "wishes" for this camera, but the WB issue is not "Optional" . It's essential the factory presets be correct if we are to have complete confidence in our tools. I'm also curious to see how Panasonic handles this type of issue.

I don't know if this problem is persistent throughout all HPX500s or only present in the first batch?

The good news is that Panasonic has acknowledged the problem and we are sending our camera in to be re-calibrated. Apparently, it was caused by faulty lights in the testing facility that caused them to incorrectly shift the 5600k preset to a greenish setting. That's just what the rep told me, I don't know if it's the actual truth?

Please report back when once you get the camera serviced. If it works, I'll send mine off as well.

Thanks,
Brad

This is great news. Please post the results, the process, time, etc. I was beginning to think we were being ignored. Thank you in advance, Jan.

You know I was just pondering the fact that a video camera company could have a lighting problem in their test facility...and not notice it.

Pardon me while I avert my eyes from the emperor.
It also makes me wonder what other corners were cut.

Have you sent you camera in yet?

Yeah Im interested to hear if people are sending them in etc and what Pana is doing. Though I havent used the presets ever anyway.

They are still working on this one. They are close, when there is a solution I will post it here.

Thanks for your patience.

I just got my HPX 500 back from Panasonic

I just got my HPX 500 back from Panasonic

It was sent in to correct the green shift in the preset... and re-start some 'stuck' pixels.

Guess what...?

Preset is still green. Pixels are un-'stuck' but the preset is still green...

I guess they're still working on it...
