i dont really know how to start this off correctly and truth be told i am prob pretty late in the game for it... But i figured better late then never!. I just wanted to share my story.....

To start this thread accurately, it is only right that i tell you guys the back story of creating, making, and post of the film's progression.

Let me first say that i am writer at heart. Always have been and prob. always will be. I have been writing movie scripts since i was 12 (for better or worse.) This particular script was close to my heart the entire process of writing it. For some reason or another, this thing connected with me on deep levels. Now , Im not saying that Im the 2nd coming of some great screenwriter and that i am super talented, far from it, but on a personal level this script was significant to me, more so than anything I had ever written before. To me, it is important to follow that feeling. To take the emotion to the next step..

On the day I completely finished "The Fiction" script, i called my agent and emailed her the PDF. Of course, it took her 12 days to call me back. But when she did, it was clear that this script was special. She was seeing $ signs, I was excited that finally, finally my work would be noticed and i can inspire someone.

So agents do what they do..... she shopped, didnt call me back, shopped, didnt call me back and shopped more... finally she called me to her office and presented the offers. They were 5x larger than anything i ever made before. With deals with words like grossing, residuals and back end options...... Now I've never been quoted as "smart", but i knew this was a major crossroads in my life and needed to make the right decision to shape myself for my future and for the betterment of myself.

So let me FF abit for you guys.... After going home from that meeting and doing some serious soul searching..... I decided to turn down all offers, and film the script myself. I felt if this thing is as good as everyone is saying it is, then why do i need to hand it off to someone who will rip it apart (and they will) and film how they believe it should be told. This script has huge heart & a helpful message in it, and I wanted to be the one to accurately portray it.

Now thats all well and good, but as learned quickly. It takes a lot more than "wanting" to make a film, to actually MAKE your film.... Well if any first-time filmmakers are reading this (or if you remember your first film experience), then you must know what i was feeling. I had no clue what direction to go to. I had some money to play around with. But that really means nothing if you have no experience of film budgeting. I mean i had no clue where to start..... I remember driving to B and H one day and bought my dvx100b and thought thats all i needed lol. Crazy. I mean i was lost. I knew i wanted to make this great film and had all the energy to....but i didnt know where to begin..... So what do i do now? How do I take this script to the next level accurately and tastefully??

Thats when this site came into play... This site was my saving grace. And let me just make a side note here, jumping into a new industry can be a scary thing. I didnt know what to expect. I was scared to death that i would get laughed at because no one would believe in me. But what i found was exactly the opposite. Everyone one I encountered (so far) on this process have been truly inspiring to me. So generous. So helpful. I just think its awesome to feel comfortable in a totally new world and be welcomed as i did.. So props to all of you who are like that. That comforted me greatly. And allowed me to work efficiently.

I found mostly my enitre crew on this site. Two of the greatest people in the world. Mike Hechanova (arrik7) and Aram Bauman (beattakashi) for Camera work. Then i hired the amazingly talented Justin Durban for original music and Sound Design... Obviously there is more to making a film than just these crew member, but for the sake of legnth, i would encourage, if any are interested in my locations, actors, props, really anything at all, just to ask in the thread.....

Some of you may all ready be familiar with this film because of the thread Aram started in the DP forums...

For someone who didnt know anything about filmmaking besides just believing in a story, it has been a long 3 years lol... Currently we are in the color correction process of the film. And shipping it off to sundance next month to kick off the festival year. But dont mistake the point of this thread. I wrote this to inspire new filmmakers. Sometimes you wanna make your movie so bad that you dont, or your scared or unsure about your talents. My advice to all of you guys is just follow your dreams and do it! And if nothing else, you will learn a bunch about yourself... The past 3 years have changed my life forever. I acquired so much self growth & confidence.

The most common ? i get about this movie from friends, family and everyone is "do you think it will be succssesful?" It's a shame that no matter what happens with this film $ wise, people cant see that acting on and living your dream and pushing yourself as far as you can go is automatic success. Nothing else matters but the fact that I completed my dream @ 24 years old. And to me, thats enough.

I hope everyone enjoys this thread... any ?s you guys have please let me know. i would be very happy to answer or just talk about film....

Heres a little info about the film...

SYNOPSIS:

In the midst of creating his newest masterpiece, Werther Oaks, an established author, develops writer's block. His current novel is at a dead end, which is a challenge Werther has never had to face. After trying old methods and tricks, they all fail. He slowly falls into a thick, dark depression.

Werther begins questioning his surroundings and motives of his once loved ones. With the walls starting to close in on him, he starts seeing things. Things he can't quite understand. Werther quickly discovers that his eyes are trying to tell him something. Something more than he can grasp.

Is he losing his mind, or is his mind simply telling the story? Writer's block, it's a writer's worst fear, or hallucination.

UPDATED 8/11

Recieved a call from NeoClassic Films. Interested in purchasing final DVD for distrabution. This would mean no festival circuit. Not sure what to do here.... but i will e thinking about the options.. the $ matches my budget oddly enough....

Congratulations on nearly hitting the finish line.

As a writer, I don't know that I would have taken this option.

I actually do both, sell scripts (or do work-for-hire) as well as make my own films, and I like having both going on at once like I was able to do in 2009.

The advantage for me is that I'll have two features out later this year. Battle which I wrote and am producing (we're in final sound mixing stage in post) as well as Immigration Tango which I wrote and didn't produce (well, I got a minor producer credit for my extra work helping the main producer) myself and was fortunate enough to find it directed by a veteran director who did a nice job (the film won Best Picture at the recent Boston International Film Festival) with it.

It would really have to be THE ONE script for me to pass up my biggest payday to date (or rather 5x like you mention above) and take on the risk myself. I'd have to take into account that experienced producers with more $$ than I have access to have a better chance to attract name talent which will in turn enhance the chances of larger festivals and eventially a wider film release. In fact, I'd likely want to save THE ONE for the bigger deal if I could to ensure it's done the best way possible to help the film find its audience.

Not that I lack confidence in my own abilities...believe me, I'm very happy with Battle and expect a lot from it. I just realize that even if I do a great job, the resources limit me still.

So Kudos to you for taking it on yourself.

The still look nice, good luck with it. If the offer matches your budget...Take it! :)

Congratulations.

thanks for the advice polfilm... im just a little nervous about selling myself short at this point. I mean i dont know much about how to handle the festival route other than shipping it out there w/ withoutabox.. But i dont wanna feel like 10 years down the line i regret not getting this film out there in festivels. For me this may be the only film i make, i wanna give it the chance it deserves. Anyhow i will keep you guys updated on what transpires in the next days.... I also didnt help that i fired my agent while shopping this script, and to this date have not found another to take me on......

@Martay.. i def hear ya... as a writer it was very untraveled waters for me. I am big on comfort in my life lol...the last 3 years have been anything but.... i can say that it has been so worth it, regardless of the quality of my film. Just doing it has been worth it...

I def feel what you mean about "name actors." Very smart to think this way.. Even if they are there for a 2 day shoot and small role. You still attatch thier name on it ---> publicity. On "The One" i hear ya... this was that to me, again not quality wise, but heartwise.... Butkudos to you for making waves in the screenwriting end of the world.. that is a tough world....

p.s. cpngrats on having two fils being made! that is an unbelieable achievement...

Go for the festival circuit, if you've got one offer already, and this is really your baby - you may find another/better one down the line...but it sounds like that's not really the point for you, from reading your blog it seems like a direct to dvd release would be a sort of underwhelming end to something that you really put your heart into, seems like you deserve a chance to see the film in a real theater in a real festival...

thisisapcalypse...thank you for the advice...what you said is pretty much how i feel deep down.... At this point though i really wanna do whats best for the movie and try not to let me emotions get in the way... seeing in a theatre would be a unbelievable thing for me.. btw "For The Love Of God" looks like a cool project... joined as a fan on fb,,

UPDATE: 8/14/2010

Hey guys.... i just wanted to update you on my current situations... turns out the DVD distrabution deal was very one sided... basically at the end of the day i am taking a one time compensation and thats it.. nothing else.. I decided to turn it down and go the festival route... I am a little worried because i feel i am very unprepared but in 30day the film will be finished and here i go! thanks for looking and keeping posted guys! i appreciate and ANY festival advice would be GREATLY appreciated... thanks

Hey, found your thread through the screenwriting forum.

Good job tackling a feature, man. The question your family and friends posed: is it going to be successful?

I hear you on "it's already successful for me, because it's finished." I think they're asking "Will people see this? Will people like this? Will it make back its money and then some?"

It's a major question to ask yourself, once you're done feeling accomplished.

As I set out to helm my first feature, although it's going to be nice to say "I did this", it'll be better to say:

- Got Theatrical Distribution (limited is fine)
- Cost X to produce and Netted Y
- Talent has moved on to larger productions
- Have the money to produce another feature.

Those are primary goals, with a lot of secondaries which do not exclude paying back crew, etc afterward.

Always something to keep in mind.

Good goals.

The theatrical one is a very tricky matter even limited. I'll speak more on my own projects as soon as dust settles but it sounds logical on paper to mount a limited theatrical release but it's more complicated I'm finding.

Otherwise, we're still shooting for those type of goals as well (and truthfully the theatrical is still in the mix though less a no brainer than I'd initially expected).

i appreciate your thoughts guys.... a theatrical run would be a dream come true. At this point, it just is not realistic. I have only a limited amount of funds left for marketing and festival fees. So as far as my situation goes, the festival route is my last hope for anything to happen with this film publicly, or maybe i missed a step lol? idk.... honestly man, after flming and a rough post effort... you do yourself alot of justice to take 2 months off to prepare for the festival side of things....

btw Martay, best of luck on your films...

Just met a guy that knows the president of Lakeshore Entertainment. Says to give him the movie before shooting it out to festivals. Oh ya and he wants 25% of whatever Lakeshore possibly gives me lol. Amazing how these people come out of the wood work lol.

It's all about... you. Seriously.

1) Congratulations on deciding to do this film - you have guts and vision. Great.

Take the money and run? Or go to the festivals and throw this baby out into the big world, sink or swim?

2) Depends on the movie. If it's great, go for the festivals - you can get picked up for distribution that way. And if it's great, odds are very high it'll get picked up.

Which leads to this: it's about you. How good is this film in your judgment? Is the film so good that you cannot possibly doubt it? Then there's your answer - festivals. What if you are wrong? Well, then you just learned a valuable lesson about yourself... see, it is about you. And if you are right? You just learned a valuable lesson about yourself.

Go with your gut. That way, you can make it clean - you'll have only yourself and nobody else to blame or be happy with. Either way, it benefits you in the future.

And again - congratulations. It is good you had the confidence to make a film yourself. You have already learned a lot about the industry, the craft and yourself, and there's more learning ahead - that will make you a better professional in every way, including a writer!

OldCorpse, thank you for your thoughts... As far as it is up to me... the festival route is def the right direction, i think in choosing any other option i would feel i cut my self short. Even if nothing happens with it, i will know i tried all outlets. Currently i am trying to se up a local premiere with press and all... It is a nightmare here in CT to try to organize something like this....

First off, congrats, bigtime! I would say look at your situation and decide what you want out of your film. If you already have an offer, that's a good sign. However, if you do the film festival market, I think you would need to plan on at least a year to see what may come of it. Plus, you will be spending extra money for the cost of submitting and something may or may not come of it. If you're not hurting for money right now, you might continue to explore your options a little further.

Thanks Marlon, I figured that the festival route would run about a year... and i dont know about making waves in the screenwriting world, but at least doing some minor splashing for the time being lol....

Also i have a question for anyone who would like to answer... ... Recently I have been attempting to put together a "premiere" for my film (friends and family) and the thought of selling DVDs struck my mind.........how do you guys feel about selling DVDs of the film? Do festivals look down on this? I'm wondering if they catch wind of me distributing my own DVDs it will alter their decisions of carrying my film... thanks for reading guys...

UPDATE #3
12/27/2010

well slamdance has passed without me on the bill. Well and good. But at this point i am getting the feeling my film wont be in those tier 1 festivals. So i at this point i must make a decision if i am game for DVD distribution options or if i am going to to 2nd tier festivals. As i first time filmmaker, what do you guys recommend, I am kind of at a loss at this point. I mean all 2nd tier festivals will do for me at this point is prize money (if that) or a possible DVD distribution deal. which i already have on the table.... any advice would be very helpful. Thanks guys
