Dear friends.
Some say I've got great face for radio, some say it looks like a deleted scene from "men in black", but I hope you will find the "evolution of my VDSLR ENG/documentary style rig" video helpful.

Thank you!

Yeah i agree with you. That lens would hold a follow focus just fine and something like the new Jag 35 electronic follow focus would be great. I also worry about how your going to start and stop recording. A remote for that on the handle would be great as well.

Overall a very well put together video and a good looking rig. I just dont think it would suite my needs is all.

definitely needs a focus solution, other than that it looks great, I really like the look of that shoulder pad with counter-weight but that has to be very heavy rig.

Nice video! Leivant! looks very expensive, the camera is probably the cheaper part...and yes focus? thats the big question. How do you focus with both hands on the handles?

Friends, thank you for taking the time watching the video and commenting.
Coming from the documentary world I have never used a follow focus wile shooting (unlike during other types of work I also do).
The rig that now behaves like a "normal" shoulder mount camera is extremely well balanced, so the left hand is on the lens for adjusting focus and the right hand is holding the right handle.

I should have taken few seconds and show that kind of holding in the video...

Thank you!

Johnnie

P.S- The next video coming soon is about the Cineroid EVF

the camera is probably the cheaper part...

Dear timbook2

Cameras will come and go...most parts of the rig (if not all) can and will be used in the future with any modern VDSLR/video camera. Light, sound, EVF, rig, you name it, so the investment is not gone...

Thanks!

Johnnie

THANK YOU. I don't know when everyone decided that a follow focus is necessary for all types of shooting. I've never seen a professional documentary/news camera person ever use a follow focus in the field.

I've got an H4, not an H4n, but I was under the assumption that you can dial in gain on the H4n on a scale of 1-100. This is one of the main reasons I've thought about upgrading to one. is this untrue?

very nice vid. where can i get the EVF and how much was it. I see no pricing on the website..all i see is "sold out".

Dear Nick.

Unless I am terribly wrong, there is no way to adjust the mic sensitivity with the H4n. I've approached Zoom and requested a solution/update. The answer I got was that my request will be sent to the development group.... In any case the Tascam DR100 is a better device for not so much more money.

Thanks!

Johnnie

how much was it.

Dear Jambredz
There is a user named "Cineroid" here in dvxuser (http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/member.php?72608-cineroid)
I think he is the U.S distributer and might be able to help with answers. If I am not mistaken the U.S price is around $800, a bit steep but for me it is a good solution because of the following reasons:
-Many of the modern cameras have the VF located strangely (AF100, F3)
-Some have poor VF resolution.
-In the case of VDSLR's, It is now possible to judge focus and exposure in much accurate way. Also, the HDMI out might prove useful when working with anyone who needs to see a picture too.

Stay tune to my Cineroid short review coming soon.

Thanks!

Johnnie

thanks Johnnie. I was looking for a cheaper alternative to the zacuto evf but this seems to be about the same price and i already have my zfinder thats compatible with the zacuto EVF.

The problem with using these cameras is that the lenses are not designed to be focused manually for video, the throws are very short. I have a similar shoulder setup and shoot documentaries with my rig and I definitely love having the followfocus, of course to each his own but it simply works better ergonomically though i still need to pick up some counter-weights. There's always something else to buy.

Thank you cineroid and if you are in a direct contact with the Cineroid people in Korea please let them know they designed a fine product!

Unless my terminology is wrong, the H4n does not have that capability of adding gain. Yes, you can adjust the input levels between 1 and 100, but there' no gain on that. 100 is just the maximum amount you can record at. There IS however a +24 and +48 in the phantom power settings, though.
