The EVF answer? TVLogic EVF035W-3G

While many people tend to avoid them, a review of the accompanying manual might provide answers to your queries. I have just received my EVF and found that the manual, although a tad too sketchy for my taste, appears to provide the answers in what I feel is a somewhat cryptic format. But, then again, others may take issue and find the manual totally adequate.

To the poster who stated that the F3's LCD is better, I will have to disagree. In fact, if the EVF, in addition to the numerous functions already included, had the ability to display a histogram or waveform, IMO, it would have rendered the LCD a useless appendage. The EVF's resolution is more than adequate for my old eyes to pull focus without FA ... try that with the LCD in daylight.

i would have said that while the manual is adequate in most ways, it appears to be written by someone for whom english is not their first language.

as for resolution, i can't make out individual pixels on the lcd. for me, it is more crisp than the evf, regardless of how it is shaded.

How long does it run with the battery?

i couldn't say how it runs on onboard batteries, i ran mine off a d-tap off the camera's battery. i just about filled a 64gig card over 11 or so hours and used two switronix exl96 batteries for camera and evf.

I assume that the above quote is referring to the F3's LCD, if not, the following may not apply. However, the LCD's image is not being viewed through a magnifier and that would necessarily make it appear "crisper." (blow up any image and see what happens to its apparent crispness). That said, the EVF has an aperture setting that allows one to make the image appear sharper if deemed necessary. Be that as it may, for my purposes, the LCD holds little allure given its position and lack of utility in daylight situations. Prior to the arrival of the Alphatron, I had been using a Zacuto EVF. Although not perfect, it was a quantum leap beyond the camera's rear mounted EVF. IMO, the Alphatron provides a much cleaner image than the Zacuto and offers more functionality. Not sure what you meant in re viewing individual pixels?

i think we can all agree on the limited usefulness of the flip-out lcd on the f3, given it's position and lack of... shroud. just about any evf that can be properly positioned for handheld use, and has some method of insuring focus, will be preferable. i suppose we could look at the numbers if we're measuring, but frequently i cannot be absolutely sure of focus in handheld conditions with just the alphatron screen, without focus assist. for me, with the alphatron, using its loupe, i can see beyond its resolution to the point where pixels are discernable.

we don't have to get pedantic about it, i'm just observing the limits of the device.

Carlos the Solid Cam EVF support for the Alphatron looks excellent.
With a locking mechanism on the arm it is perfect.
I'm saving up for it.

I am not a fan of apple and don't believe the retina hype. Seeing is believing and there are better screens for phones like Samoleds that have lower pixel counts. Pixel counts need to be considered in relation to viewing distance and we don't generally view our phones from 3" away. There are phone screens that are more vivid and higher contrast than the retina(and better for phones).

However, if you are going to magnify the screen, such as with the Alphatron, a high pixels/inch count becomes useful.
I believe the actual resolution of the retina display is 1000 TV lines.
Compare this to the highest quality and highly expensive HDVF-C35W for HDCAMs with a resolution of 500 TV lines and the Alphatron shines.

From Alister Chapman; "I've used the Sony C35W many, many times and although I couldn't compare the two
side by side, I would say that the Alphatron is just as good as the far more expensive C35W

Your emotional stance with Apple has no correlation to the actual facts. (which is 4x the previous generation). Of course, resolution is important across the board.
I've compared my Macbook Pro (last gen) to a new Retina model and the difference is VERY apparent, whether close-up or further away. The viewing angle is also increased.
There's no dispute that the Retina display is far and away better than previous models.

Thank you, I lost some of my remaining years getting a locking mechanism that did not impact the size of the arm.

My vision must really be impaired, since I cannot make out individual pixels with the loupe engaged.

I'm sorry to hear that Carlos, but appreciate your efforts.
It really does seem to be the best EVF support available, especially since there is a bracket customised for the Alphatron.

Received my Alphatron yesterday. Looks well built. I guess I'm going to put it on a Zacuto arm until the Solid Camera mount arrives- was told it was shipping this week, but not sure now. Interested to see if the Solid Camera mount could be adapted to fit on a DSLR via shoe mount or some other method...

They will ship this week, we are assembling as I write this (on Sunday). We are also brewing some options for DSLR and C300 as well as a generic 15mm iris rod mount. The design of the arm and EVF cradle were done completely from scratch which took a long time to shake down all the details. We wanted the device to have a confidence inspiring "feel", stability, ease of use, and never be a distraction from the task at hand. The design is based on one of our previous products from 2007 we did for the Sony F23 - it was very expensive and we only sold a few but we learned a lot about how to interface a creative human with a camera. The Alphatron EVF is a step up from what we have seen in 3rd party EVF's - it's ideal that the next generation of support is being launched at the same time.

The various mounts and EVF cradles are going much faster. We now have FS100, FS700, F3, F65, Epic, and Scarlet covered. That list will grow quickly.

What additional hardware will be required to attach the Solid Camera Alphatron mount to the F3? Could it attach to the Berkey top plate, or will I need another plate from Solid Camera to attach it to the camera?

I am interested in the Solid Camera EVF mount for an F3/Berkey top plate/Alphatron combination, but have not found this specific version on the company website. Could you provide ordering information for the aforementioned Solid Camera mount, along with pricing and availability. If this site does not permit the posting of such info, could you please provide a link for same. In the alternative, you could send an email to: ata@freefictiononline.com.
Thank you in advance.

We have a kit 08-108-K2 that is setup for F3's with Alphatron. It includes the GP dovetail mount that works with many cameras including the F3 with a Berkey System top plate. It also includes the cradle dedicated to the Alphatron EVF. You also have a choice to go with the GP Cradle that is intended to work with many different EVFs and LCDs, providing left/right slide at the expense of being bigger.

AbelCine is a dealer and should be receiving stock in a few days.

Carlos,

Great news that you're working on a solution for the C300!

Even though they are cheap and probably work fine, I certainly prefer to power the EVF from an external battery that is also powering everything else. Ive seen setups with four batteries to worry about which seems very cumbersome on a busy set. The Alphatron can be powered from the bottom or with a battery eliminator on the back so you have some options. At that point, the power consumption is less of a concern.
