The EOS 60D has been announced

Hoodman offers/has a small crane swing away solution to the loupe. Can an external monitor be in use with the onboard monitor while recording on the 60D?

Canon did all that they could in current situation.

You wanted video oriented screen - done. AGC - done. HDMI out - done.
Yes, line skipping is here and moire and softness. But...
They had this LSI and this sensor and they did their best.

Look at the Sony. They had all that is required to be winners. Yet screen is much worse for video (try to look through tripod head :-) ), AGC, pellice mirrors artefacts soon start to appear on all blogs.

Canon is like tortoise. Yes, it is slow, but at least it is going in right direction.

Last thing to assume. Almost all presented system cameras have big margin in their price to allow price reductions if necessary.

If Canon is a tortoise what is Nikon?

The "Hair".

As in...an in-grown hair on planet Earth's *ss!

I agree Sony is worse...they have NO excuse for their lack of presence here (DSLR), geez, at least Nikon got 24P. But...they've been in the DSLR longer than all other players...and they basically surrendered it to Canon without discussion. All they had to do was add Manual control and MANY people would have stuck with them because their sensor image processing rocks.....but...yes....Nikon is the "Hair".

Heey, don't mock Nikon. They are the Dark Horse. They have the bestest best 720p 24p manual control piece of awesome best dynamic range best colour depth best low light comparable to medium format DSLR out there.

Anyone know if another new version of the 7D or 5D that'll come out soon?
Because if this has come out replacing the T2i I figure the other two will have replacements too.
Or another DSLR that is even better for video?
My budget is under $3,000.

While I agree with everything you just said... and I've been a really big fan of Nikon for it's color and native image... it's a sad state of affairs. I've lost faith in Nikon to be a long-term competitor in the video side of DSLR... and how about the 5D, let alone the 5DmkII?

I don't know man... I don't know. With the cost of good glass I just don't feel comfortable investing in a company that seems to be in love with second place. Honestly I just don't think they have the money to stay out front... they're destined to be a few generations behind, with the occasional burst forward. Maybe they should start making office machines, projectors, and all the other crap that keeps the R&D going strong.

Nikon has the D95 to switch things around. If not I will be making the move to Canon.

Love the Nikon ergonomics, hate their lack of commitment to video.

Common sense should tell you that the future does not lie with DSLR's. It's only a matter
of time before DSLR's sensors show up in camcorders complete with XLR inputs, external batteries
and interchangeable mounts for DSLR lenses.

Once you accept this inevitability, you can see clearly which companies are already set up to move in these arena.

the 60D is NOT a replacement for the T2i.

the 60D is a replacement for the 50D.

But isn't that telling, that this is the perception... and the conversation?

Of course we can't judge the entire world of DSLR consumers by what goes on here, but one might hazard a guess that there will be more T2i users and 7D users moving to the 60D, than those migrating to it from the 50D.

Frankly, the 60D seems very enticing. Same batteries as the 7D/5D, compatibility with the EF-S system. manual audio control, SDXC support, and articulating LCD.

I'm tempted to upgrade.

I think they have just made a camera below the 50d and are positioning the 7d as something in between. In my opinion, if they had just released a "better" 50d, it would have taken away from the 7d. This seems like a good intermediate between the two.

It has way more "consumer" features, such as the various shooting modes, which are absent from the more pro cameras. It is probably better built than the t2i, but it seems less pro like than the other xxD cameras.

Which features specifically? People used to bash the Minolta 9 SLR because it had a pop up flash and -NO- pro SLR had a pop up flash.

The past month or so I have been looking at the 7D, I want to get it, its just a matter of being able to afford it at the moment, I am 19 and trying to start my own business making sports highlight films for athletes of all kinds. Just saw that the 60d came out for much less. Would it be fine to go with the 60D? I kept thinking that I would like the 7D much more if it had a flip-out screen. Is the quality the same on the 60D compared to the 7D?

video quality seems to be the same

the body is a bit smaller than the 7D, but still bigger than that of the 550D; and it is non-metal: 60D is consumer-grade (plasticky), similar to 550D; 7D is pro-grade magnessium alloy; it does have some weather sealing, but probably worse than that of the 7D

plus you may miss some features for stills (I don't know much about that, I'm not really interested in stills, a 500D would be more than enough for me on that front)

If you do videos you should have been looking at the T2i over the 7D, IMO. The video quality is pretty much identical. The only difference is the 1/3rds ISO stops the 7D has. With the extra money you would have saved you could put it towards a really great zoom lens and/or some great fast prime lenses.

However, now that the 60D is on the way I'd say go for it hand down unless you are really on a budget. It will almost certainly be identical to the 7D in video quality and pretty much identical with the T2i as well. The flip out LCD is the main reason why I'm now considering returning my T2i to Wal-Mart. The 1/3rd ISO stops are a plus as well, but that flip out LCD would help out SO much!
