The Dark Knight

I didn't have an immediate problem with his voice, but my girlfriend pointed it out constantly, and was literally laughing out loud for the first scene or two that batman is in.

Like someone else said, when you think of it as part of the disguise (so people wouldn't recognize his voice), it doesn't seem so bad.

That said, it was the exact same as the first film (the voice) and it seems like there was less hoopala about it.

I liked Burton's take on the overall style, sort of a cross between Art Deco and Gothic. His choice in picking Keeton didn't seem logical until after you saw his performance. Keeton does look like Joe Average.

I liked the voice because it fit Nolan's Batman, to me. Batman isnt some feel good superhero running around delivering one liners anymore (save for a couple...). He's a badass, angry man out to scare and beat the crap out of criminals with his new persona. If that voice didnt fit the bill, then I dont know what would. The voice is as much a part of batman as the suit is.

If Batman flew down at me and talked to me with that voice, I would just have to pause for a second, chuckle a little and offer him a throat lozenge.

There are plenty of bad@sses through both film history and life that didnt have to resort to sounding like they were coming down with a cold.

He buys hotels for impulse, he owns the best restaurants, he gets the whole Russian Ballet for him...And appears in a Chopper, with 2 gorgeous women, and throws a very intelligent speech about the DA? I mean it seems like Bruce Wayne actually OWNS Ghotam...He could run the damn place!

Wouldn't Dent not want to be associated with such a cocky, full of himself guy?

Bruce offered to throw him a fundraiser, and if you do believe that he could own Gotham, it wouldn't be very politcal of Dent to refuse it for fear of being associated with him, which isn't a bad thing. Wayne is a showoff, but hes not crooked.

I think his situation is cool because he acts so lavishly that nobody would suspect him. He is safe no matter what and has no selfish motive for protecting Gotham. An anti-social rich guy seems alot more likely then Wayne, although neither seems likely, IMO.

Agreed, Daryl. There was so much off in that quote above that I didnt know where to start. You nailed it perfectly.

I think the Batman voice didn't work because Bale was also talking in his Bruce voice throughout different parts in movie. Take joker, who had a sweet voice IMO, I think his voice worked on my imagination because I never heard his 'real' voice. If Health had acted normal in a scene or two and then went into joker mode and started talking different, it might have been a jolt to the imagination.

Im not sure what you mean by this. He spoke in his "Bruce voice" when he was Bruce Wayne, why wouldnt he? As someone pointed out earlier, its all part of the disguise. if Bruce Wayne and Batman had the same voices, dont you think it would be easy to recognize since he deals with the same people?

If Batman had a normal voice he wouldnt be very intimidating, in my opinion. Its the "theatricality" and making yourself more than just a regular man touched on in the first movie.

Maybe it could have been a little less harsh, whatever, but I liked the voice. So you can all go to hell! To hell i say!

I just saw it yesterday and really enjoyed it. The acting was good and the mood was produced in a phenomenal fashion, which created a very intense feeling throughout. Like Barry, however, if I had to pick one thing off the top of my head that bothered me or took me out it would be the voice. It seemed as though he was trying to hard, although after a while I just got used to it and it didn't bother me as much.

By the way, this whole film making thing is a disease, as you all know. I can't watch a movie without focusing on the little things like "did they remove every trace of the helicopter reflection in post?" meanwhile I am missing action because I am scanning the glass panels of the building. But it's a good disease...

Wayne's Batman voice

Wayne's Batman voice

So much talk about a dood making his tough guy voice. Geez! I guess you've got a damn good movie when the most things people are picking on is a voice and how an actress looks.

The voice doesn't bother me much anymore. There's a reason he's doing it, people just don't like Bale doing the gruff thing, oh well. Bale and Nolan are using their noggins, that's why he changes his voice, and what would you have him do otherwise - go Irish? Southern? Use Bale's natural Welsh? Write his message on cards and hand them to people? ASL?

The only thing I found odd was that he used his Batman voice when he talked to Lucius towards the end in the room with all the cell phone computer screens. Lucius knows who he is, but I guess Wayne can't resist when he's in the suit.

It was a fantastic movie, that is why my only real criticism was the voice. I mean sure, I had nitpicks here and there but nothing catastrophic. I guess I just felt that he was trying to hard. But honestly, I don't know what I would have done differently.

I dont think anyone is saying he shouldnt try to disguise his voice, the point is that it sounded ridiculous.

You may cast Don Cheadle in a film and he is an awesome actor and perfect for the role, but then the role is for a breakdancer and he is a horrible breakdancer and cant do it for sh*t and then all the blind Don Cheadle fans and all the fans of "Breakdancin' 4: Bringin It To Da Floor" get all upset saying "He's awesome. So he's not the best breakdancer, what is he supposed to do? He did what he was supposed to do. Sorry it isnt perfect."

Well.... get a dude that can breakdance.

And yes, my point IS that if Bale cant do the Batman voice, then recast him. It's that simple.

Which brings up the point that, for whatever reason, Nolan must like the Batman voice. :) (And I can't, personally, imagine why, but he's obviously a better director than me, so what do I know? :D ) I'm not a fan of the BV, personally, but there must be a reason for it, or Nolan wouldn't have left it in...

BTW, my last line was a joke. My point is, if something isnt working, you do something about it. The voice aint working.

...for whatever reason, Nolan must like the Batman voice.

Or they tried a handful of different things are ended up saying "ah....F it. Just do that sh*tty raspy thing. I cant think of anything better."

My theory on why his Batman voice was such an issue in this picture:

As previously stated his voice makes sense when viewed through the eyes of the character Bruce Wayne and in the first movie the Batman lines were very short declarative phrases or questions; I'm Batman, This is so-and-son, Where is so-and-so, What is so-and-so.

I would have to go and watch the first movie again but I believe he dropped the voice at the end when he had actual full sentence dialog in the suit while fighting Liam's character who knew who Batman was.

In this movie Batman takes on longer dialog that we actual expect to hear the words emoted instead of just declared, therefore the words seem fake without the any emotions, besides anger, behind them. We become aware that "acting" is going on even though it is supposedly the character Bruce that is acting.

My 2 cents
