The Dark Knight

You may not think Maggie is hot, but someone somewhere thinks that it just can't any better.

Blind people.

Matt makes some great points... and some weaker ones, but the point is that this is a MOVIE. In MOVIES, you dont cast an ugly chick because "looks shouldnt matter". Hollywood, films and TV are full of BEAUTIFUL people because that what sells. That's why you have Chalize Theron in ANY movie, not just one where she plays a supermodel (Celebrity). Because in HOLLYWOOD and FILMS, normal people are GORGEOUS. Now, you take this BILLIONAIRE and you cast someone that is butt ugly as the dream girl? Really?

And... I was willing to accept her if the ACTING was good. It was worse than Holmes. At least with Holmes we had a pretty girl. BUT.... there is no reason to cast someone UGLY just to get some acting talent. The aforementioned Charlize or MANY OTHERS can easily fit the bill.

As for this:

John C Lyons said:
Yeah, um, you gotta lay off Maggie Gyllenhaal here. The casting of these movies (overseen by John Papsidera who has done all of Nolan's movies as far as I know) is done based on acting talent.

Yeah, um, no I dont. I dont care WHO cast it, or why YOU THINK they did. It was a bad choice.

Billionaires don't have to make choices like that... there are plenty of high quality, high caliber women in the world... maybe not at your local starbucks... but there aren't many billionaires there either. It's a fallacy to think that men don't want hot women... look at who billionaires hook up with in real life. A pretty good barometer for simulating reality in MY world. In that respect I think Iron Man was more true to life. Why does he own a lambo? There are other cars that are just as fast and 10x more reliable... but the story is more interesting with the eye candy. I'm not talking "blond bimbo" here... but there's a pretty big gap between that and a chick that wouldn't turn my head at the produce counter... especially with lines like "and beautiful she is".

And frankly... if that's the case, then maybe they should give the average audience member some hidden reasons why she's so great.

Did you not see Batman Begins? Bruce and Rachel obviously have a childhood connection that far goes deeper than looks. She is probably the only woman he's ever loved because she's the only one that knows the real him. You guys are thinking with your dicks on this one.

Oops... my bad. Thanks for clearing that up. I guess if the beaver were my childhood friend I'd be cool with the Jerry Mathers Effect too.

If it were me I would have tried to make sure his childhood friend grew up into a significantly hotter chick. Do the google thing... it's interesting, if not valid.

But it's pointless, because Bruce Wayne is not just a billionaire playboy...HE'S EFFING BATMAN! That makes him a little more guarded about who he lets into his heart, if anybody. Rachel is the only one he's able to let in because she always has been...As for Harvey Dent, he's a DA, not a movie star. I'm sure most women who work for the district attorney's office look more like Maggie than Heidi Klum. You guys just think she's ugly, which isn't a valid criticism as looks are subjective. I can understand if she was SOOOOO ugly it defies credibility, but at worst she's average looking. Different strokes for different folks...And while I don't want to drag this down to a political discussion I get the feeling some of the attitude displayed toward Maggie is the result of her vocal political stances.

Well - different strokes I suppose.
I'm kind of surprised to hear so much disdain for Maggie Gylenhaal.
Personally I think she's gorgeous, on top of being a very talented actress.

But - to each his own.

Loved the movie but came back to this thread to express my disdain for the average looking girlfriend that not just one, but TWO incredible men can't get over. When Bruce says... what he says (no spoiler I guess)... I can't believe it. Why would a super-cool, super-good looking BILLIONAIRE want to spend the rest of his life with ugly betty? Not buying it.

Maggie Gyllenhall ugly? This proves it. You're gay. I don't think she was a great choice for the role, or even this kind of big budget hummer of a movie, but ugly? Come on.

i just got back from seeing this ... i really had to pee at the end, but i would have peed my pants to stay in the theater and not miss a minute. Holy Smokes.

I had my small gripes, but this movie kicked so much ass it doesn't matter. The relationship between the Joker and Batman was perfect. I was sad leaving the theater knowing that I'd never see it like that again.

If you guys want realism, you have to take the good with the bad, ie: realistic looking girlfriends, which if yours is like mine, she ain't no supermodel.

I'm only half-kidding, but which part?

Jeez, Mark. You didn't have to go there!...I'm not defending her because I think she's hot, I don't really, but I find it completely plausible in the context of the film that both men would have feelings for her, even if she's not the hottest women on the planet.

That was meant for Matt.

I saw this last night with Jack and Megan. I am a little surprised how crazy everyone is for this movie. I didn't care for it all that much. I thought the action scenes were all muddled and uninspired, all shot so close you couldn't tell who was hitting who. I'm not a fan of that stuff. I like to see spectacular fight scenes, esp if we are supposed to believe that the hero is some kind of bad-assed fighter.

I also wish just once Batman would solve something with his head instead of his checkbook.

I thought Ledger was good. Loved the opening bank robbery and the pencil bit and REALLY wish the rest of his killing had been half as creative and fun as the pencil bit. I mean, drums of gas might be effective, but not very fun to watch.

Also, I didn't understand when Joker gave them the choice, why not just call the uptown precinct and tell them to get to her. I mean, in NYC there are -precincts like every 5 blocks. And even in LA Confidential, Exley could call in the Hollywood Sheriff to watch Lynn because they wouldn't get to her in time.

Anyway, I thought this was a kind of mediocre action movie. Nothing close the best of the genre, like a Die Hard. I don't fully understand why everyone is so excited about this.

Also found it a little weird that they used Chicago, since it is such a recognizable city and Gotham is NYC.

I wonder how much this thing will take in? Spiderman 3 sucked and I really hope this movie surpasses that. I really hope they do a Spidey Re-boot with all new everything.

Mark, you're just further breaking my heart because we can't be together for more then one afternoon of hot weiners.

Hey I'm just having fun with the reactions... but w/o reading the entire backstory of the thread... I just think that Katie Holmes looked appropriate for Rachel Dawes and I didn't feel the same about this other girl... who happens to look very beautiful in some online photos I've seen... but didn't strike me as beautiful in this movie, and I think she should be for this role. As for as a political reason behind it? Man I have zero idea what that even means... I'm nowhere near that current on celebrity politics.

It beat Spidey's opening day and will be its opening weekend...and the hype and money spent on marketing is LOADS above Spidey 3's. If it doesn't beat it I'll be suprised...it'll be really really really close if it doesn't.

But isn't the Sam Raimey Spidey movies already a new reboot?

Oh yeah, in the Hong Kong segment, didn't the "Korean smugglers" kind of notice that they dropped off Wayne and picked up Batman? :) Reminds me of that SNL where Bill Murray leaves the apartment as Clarke Kent to get ice, and returns as Superman through the window with an "Ah Darn!" for blowing his own cover.

I'm gay too, Mark. Call me gay.

After reading these posts, I'm fairly certain that Battuta thinks Batman is a real guy.

Ain't that the truth? It's a damn shame. A real loss for all of us. Now we have this amazing, disturbing performance to always remember him by.

It's nice to see a good movie shatter records ($155M estimated take). SpiderMan 3 was garbage.
