The Dark Knight

80-100? Probably closer to 60-70. We already saw it was very front-heavy, with the pretty big fall from Friday to Saturday. It'll make big bucks, but I don't know if it has the staying power. Granted, it is the best film of the summer, and it is hitting a larger audience than I expected - wide array of demographics at both the Imax and standard theaters I saw it in. It'll probably get a little push with the people who didn't feel like braving the insanity of opening weekend, but still, I think 70 might even be pushing it.

Ain't that the truth? It's a damn shame. A real loss for all of us. Now we have this amazing, disturbing performance to always remember him by.

It's nice to see a good movie shatter records ($155M estimated take).

Man I couldn't agree more with this or Sliker's post that you quoted... I sat there thinking how great that relationship was...

Is this thread past spoiler warnings? If not then dark text below:

When the Joker says "you complete me" that was so funny and true and mind-fugging at the same time... it was perfect, especially after the Joker kept repeating "I want you to" when Batman previously had the opportunity to mow him down. I got chills at how beautiful the "suicidal" dialog suited the Joker... coming from Heath it was really buzzing my brain (sadly, in a satisfying yet unsatisfying way)... clearly THIS is how the Joker should have been played all along. Did you notice how the Joker was so ready to die, but only within the flow of chaotic events? He was constantly READY for it... willing to go at any time... I'll DEFINITELY see this on the big screen again.

I'm gay too, Mark. Call me gay.

After reading these posts, I'm fairly certain that Battuta thinks Batman is a real guy.

I'm just trying to keep the discourse civil. It's hard to tell when someone's joking sometimes when all you're looking at are words. Use an emoticon next time or something...fag.

I was going off of the swan dive that Spidey 3 took in it's second weekend and it still pulled in 60. I think word-of-mouth of how awesome it is, people who will go that didn't want the first weekend crowds, and repeat viewers will take it over 80.

Cause I mean, here's your choice next weekend. Hmm ... should i see TDK again, or X-files ... and enjoy some of X-zibit's acting.

You also have to remember that the friday number includes those thursday midnight friday 3 am/6 am screenings, the dip would be considerably less if you take those out.

so ... who's the next joker?

It did it! Beat SM3... YES!

I am seeing it again tomorrow night.

With regards to Wayne going in and Batman coming out... I assumed that he went in on the little Grumman Goose or whatever the seaplane was that picked him up from the boat. Could have been an entirely different flight crew from the one that picked him up.

Also, I didn't understand when Joker gave them the choice, why not just call the uptown precinct and tell them to get to her. I mean, in NYC there are -precincts like every 5 blocks. And even in LA Confidential, Exley could call in the Hollywood Sheriff to watch Lynn because they wouldn't get to her in time.

Anyway, I thought this was a kind of mediocre action movie. Nothing close the best of the genre, like a Die Hard. I don't fully understand why everyone is so excited about this.

Also found it a little weird that they used Chicago, since it is such a recognizable city and Gotham is NYC.

Wow, I didn't think there'd be anyone agreeing with me. This is shocking. I already breached the argument about "the choice", but lazily. I only later realized what you said. Just call someone. You're in a city, not the middle of a desert. This is a major character you're killing, as well as turning a major character into a villian. That logic should be airtight.

Let me ask you something, Mark Are you a batman comic book guy? I feel like there's some connection people have with that character through the comic book that is so strong it allows them to overlook the problems with this movie.

But anyway, I posted earlier that there was no way this movie would make 130 mil. So I'll eat crow on that. And I will say I am very happy that this movie holds the record over Spiderman 3, as that movie was maybe one of the worst I've ever seen. Still, the fact that Spiderman 3 even held the record in the first place pretty much proves that these records mean nothing.

Anybody know what the biggest opening of all time is taking into account inflation?

As of now it made 155 million. Surpassing spider man 3. It cost 180 million to make before marketing according to comingsoon.net. Nice! It was better than spiderman 3. But it will not best titanic. There is something like 200 million between number 1 and number on the highest grossing movie list. I think it will hit 400 mil but will not pass 600 mil. No way.

The only defense I can think of is that Gotham City is so corrupt, there might not be another precinct Gordon can trust.

Interesting enough, I HATE comic books, really.. don't have any use for them at all...and usually don't like comic book movies either... but I LOVED TDK.

That's why I gave the LA Confidential argument earlier, where they are in an LA where EVERYONE is corrupt in some way, some lower level guy at the Hollywood Sheriff owed Exley a favor so did it on that basis.

And in the LA Confidential screenplay, the sheriff actually says: "Okay Exley, now we're even."

I think it's fine to assume that Gotham is so corrupt, but what gave the LA Confidential situation that much more realism is that the sheriff was doing it for some political reason of his own. Nothing indicates he wasn't corrupt, but he might have been corrupt on Exley's side. Just a tiny tiny detail that helps make that movie perfect, and the authors of this movie should have thought through, IMO.

I mean, Dent goes out of his way to tell us how much he thinks Gordan's team is corrupt itself. Even though they are Gordan's men.

I was a fan of the 80s Dark Knight. I really, REALLY wish they would have made that instead. They took some elements in this, but that world has Superman working for Regan against the Russians and eventually ordered to bring in the Batman.

But that showed a Batman who was pushing 60, grey haired and waaaaaay over the hill and really a relic of some bygone superhero age.

The Joker in that is pretty awesome as well.

Well, not every movie can be L.A. Confidential (DAMN YOU TITANIC!). I really loved The Dark Knight, even if it isn't absolute perfection. Nolan's films always have a thematic integrity that elevates them above most stuff...and I haven't read any comics since I was 12, and back then I was a Marvel guy.
