Now that the cameras are shipping I thought I'd start a thread here for us to discuss all things R5C; rigging, power, cables, all other accessories and menu set-up etc.

I picked mine up on Thursday and take it away with me this afternoon for it's first paid job alongside my C500MKII. I've already bought the wrong cables for timecode, everything else I've bought seems to work well.

I've decked mine out with the Smallrig cage which fits nicely while keeping a compact profile.

I'm powering with NPF batteries for an extended runtime via a Power Junkie from Blind spot. This is great for all codecs/frame rates except 8k50/60. Fine for me as I'll be shooting in XAVC, but it would be great to find a power solution that works in all formats/frame rates.

I'm looking for a decent stereo mic, small as pos to go on the camera for scratch audio, so if anyone has any experience to share with one they'd recommend post it below along with any other recommendations.

I'm also looking for a good 5 inch monitor and saw the below which seems a crazy price, anyone know if they are any good?

I'll probably get my camera on April 11th. Will be lazily reading along to see what you all come up with and what your experiences are.

I'll try the camera out and see how I feel. I have a nawing feeling the R3 would be a slightly better fit for me, but the R5c does have a few things going for it. Interstingly, 8K is not high on my "well, isn't that great-list".

My 1Dx mk2 is gone and in it's place sits a new CFexpress card reader, a couple of memory cards and the EF to RF VND adapter. We'll see how this goes.
 
I'm a big fan of my Desview R6 5.5", currently selling for $239 at B&H https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/produ...its.html/specs

the build quality isn't great, but I've been using it for a year and happy so far. the portkeys probably doesn't have better build quality

desview is 240g as compared to the 137g of the portkeys. but the portkeys is only 500 nits whereas the desview is 2800

my feeling is that all the cheaper monitors are pretty usable these days if you don't mind the build quality. I have a super lightweight liliput a5 (118g) which is also fine but it feels very dim at 400 nits and lacks touchscreen and all the exposure/framing aids of the desview and portkeys

one thing I really like about the desview is you just swipe up and down with one finger on the left side to adjust monitor brightness. it really helps with power conservation that I can turn it down so easily when I don't need it and have it back up in a split second

R5 C arrived yesterday. Unfortunately Nicerig cage sits over the Timecode port. Will return and pick up SmallRig.

Have been shooting both stills and video with 1DX II for the past few years so the cinema settings are completely new to me. Just wondering if anyone can point me towards information online other than the "Advance Video Manual" in order to learn how to understand and customise the camera?

Also, is there a histogram on the R5 C? for the life of me I can't find it.

If you watch any video on C500/300/70 you’ll get the gist if it as they are all basically the same. Then it’s just a case of setting up the buttons and My Menu the way you want it. When I get back from my shoot in Saudi I’ll post how I have mine set-up.

Have in mind that with most cheap monitors the waveform only displays what you see on the screen. If you have a LUT enabled the waveform shows the result of the LUT. I returned my OSEE / SWIT because of that reason and went for the Atomos Shinoby 7" instead. Unfortunately even the Ninjav/V+ doesn't allow you to switch between camera feed and LUT.

BM5III has that on/off feature. It is super bright 2200nits and has great colors but it's a bit pricey. (I have one from a trade in)
 
I believe my Desview R6 waveform only interprets the incoming feed. if you apply a LUT, the waveform doesn't change. i'm not sure if there's a way to switch it to showing you the results of the LUT

With my C500 I tend to use false colour on the external monitor and the WFM on the camera.
 
The desview r6 has both spectrum and arri false color, fwiw. But I think that a lot of the same features are available on similarly-priced monitors that were also released very recently
 
Got my R5c yesterday. FXLION Nano One seems to work, but I'm not so sure this is a good solution. Would be better with P-tap to regulated USB-C power cable I think. USB-C is soldiered to the main board, so there will be expensive breakage at some point.

I use a coiled cord and zip tie around a few of the loops, so when the battery falls, drops, it doesn't pull on the connector.

Smallrig has cable clamps for their R5C cage to help with that. I know I bought a mix of Smallrig and Lockcircle stuff for my A7S with its dinky HDMI connector and that's been going strong for years now.

I've been looking at the R5C from a distance, seems like a nice 8K solution but I'm waiting until NAB to see what might come out. Also, for monitors, Feelworld has been pretty good for me across several cameras and does 99% of anything I would want from an external monitor and with great pricing, they even have LUT enabled monitors now for about the same price as I bought my 7" 4K model a few years ago.
 
ok with an R6 im not a member of the clud.

Wht I do is use a dummy battery to Dtap cable.

Seems more robust that a usb sticking out the side.

Also I have .. bpu to dtap, vlock to dtap, car batt to dtap so I can select the correct power supply for the job all without having bought more toys apart from the dummy batt.
 
We've just run into a bit of an issue as we are trying to figure how a cage with top handle and 7 inch monitor will work while having the TASCAM CA-XLR2d-C mounted to the R5 C hotshoe.

Although a bit heavy, this would be the ultimate run and gun solution for us.

Would love to hear any suggestions
 
I dont want to seem too flip but it gets to a point wher a second budy might be simplest.

Ive got c200 and r6, I do shoot video broll on the R6 as well as stills but not proper sound
