The Canon 5D still shines

After what started out on reduser as a discussion of why this movie only could be shot on film and not Alexa and Epic the news came out that this was shot on a 5D(and 7D?), I don't know whether it is Mark II or III, but damn this fooled me, I was so sure of that this was shot on film.. The style really minds me of the new Malick movies, all so beautiful...

Where'd you get that info?
Camera: Arricam LT
Stock: Fuji Eterna
Lens: Zeiss T1.3 Super Speed Mk III

Curious indeed...

"For a director used to his own perfectionism, this was a different experience of filmmaking. When it was time to view the rushes, Cary freely admits that he was nervous. But seeing the footage, he knew that the project had worked, in his own words, ‘take a breath. Ok. There’s something there’."

Unless "rushes" can also relate to digital acquisition?

Also where did you get that information, I wouldn't hesitate to say it looks like a Fuji stock, but I feel fooled enough by this piece as is..

I'm not sure if this is where dtjohns1 got the info, but there seems to be a post by Ron S. Sevrinas on the Vimeo page that says this.
Now, unless Mr. Sevrinas was part of the production team, the question is where HE got the info from?

Seems like someone at some point in the chain here is starting rumors. It could go either way IMO.

I think that guy was guessing from a photo at indiewire ...but the pic for the article not from the Sleepwalking shoot....it's from the Jane Eyre shoot actually.

Mmm.. The BTS photos you posted serve as solid evidence, along with the colorist's own statement. More importantly, I just fell in love with the Kenyan light and climate, seriously the shots around dusk/dawn with the fog are crazy. It looks good even on the "not-so-good" camera used for the BTS photos

Looks good, but definitely not like film or Alexa. Curious about the steady underexposure, but looks good regardless.

Some things looks like it could be 5Dish, but others look way to good to be 5D. I would also really like to know what this was shot on.

BTS clearly show that they are 5D's........

Maybe they did what Act Of valor did, combination of both?

I see no reason why this couldn't be 5D. The shot at 52sec definitely feels that way for instance.
A heck of a lot of very bouncy wide angle/hand held kinda suggest it too. It also feels like a modded profile was used.

Nice and pretty, but anyone who thinks "no way is it a 5D" hasn't been following that camera for the last couple of years.
A lot of people have done a great deal of tweaking to get those levels of info and contrast. I think it is entirely plausible.

Firstly, LMFAO at the red fanboys for thinking this was film! So 5D looking.

I like the underexposure, it suits the narrative. The problem with underexposing on the 5D is you get a very flat image. Much better to expose correctly and pull it back in post. H.264 is a *****, you have to nail every shot or you're screwed.

I'm about to upload a teaser for a feature I'm shooting next year shot with a MKIII that looks quite filmic, it's controlled lighting and mostly tight shots which the MKIII excels at. All shot with Leica-r primes so sharpness is not an issue. The only thing that gives it away is some high ISO banding but I could probably fix that with a bit of post massaging.

Yeah I got that info from the vimeo page which is now deleted lol. I honestly couldn't believe it was 5D either basing it off the extreme contrast ranges in the shots but looking back on it a lot of the shots are really soft in comparison to film and theres that infamous 5d shallow dof hunting in some shots also. Anywho I stand corrected and I wish more people could make films like this so we could drop all these 5D vs GH2 vs GH3 vs... debates and really focus on true cinematography and filmmaking but this really shows the difference between amatuers like people on these boards and professionals with talented crews.

It looks like the cinematography section of this forum is a little underrated compared to the more gear-head oriented ones, hehe..

Some of the credits for the beautiful cinematography must go to Kenya itself though, it's funny how different the light is throughout various places on the globe.

Looks like a very flat scene file, perhaps the Technicolor scene file. Also looks a little soft, but that's being nit-picky.
It is very Malik-esque.

BTW, props to whoever designed the credit page, very nicely done.
