I don't think that's a problem of Japan #apple
Does anyone here really think limiting the C200 codec to 8bit 4:2:0 is an oversight and not a meticulously planned part of a diverse business strategy...?
It's not about making everybody happy, but about making an attractive enough product to appeal to a certain target group.
I understand the reflex of demanding more, but does anybody buy a VW Golf and starts a petition to make it an Audi RS8, just because the company "has the tech anyways"?
I think the problem with that analogy is that C200 has a better engine than Canon's other C Line cameras while the Golf is, well it's a Golf. An analogy that makes more sense to me would be if a Volkswagen released a new Golf in 2017 that had the engine of the 2019 RS8 before that new RS8 was announced. If VW put governors on that fancy new Golf limiting the cars performance when it wasn't on a racetrack (shooting RAW), Golf owners could rightly be annoyed when their new car wouldn't accelerate or handle as well as they knew it could. 4:2:0 recording on a camera that might be able to do 4:4:4 is a sick joke. It only adds insult to injury that the 2 year old XC10 that is roughly one quarter the price of the C200 has internal UHD 4:2:2 XF-AVC recording. Just because something isn't illegal or unethical doesn't mean it can't be very annoying.
I think when Canon and others artificially segment their cameras like this they create an opening for upstarts like Blackmagic Design in much the same way that Intel has with AMD. Intel only changed strategies when AMD picked up sales and I think the same rule will apply here. I expect Canon will care more about sales going to Panasonic, Sony and even Blackmagic than the grumbles of people making money with their C200's. If people who are the market for a new camera wait a couple of months and buy the EVA1 or even the rumored update for the FS5 it will put real pressure on Canon.
Having said that I might be the kind of weirdo the C200 was designed for. Most of what what I shoot is high end event work for digital delivery but I also shoot some short form narrative. In the latter case the C200 12 bit internal RAW is a clear winner over anything I have ever owned. I plan to rent one soon to see how the MP4 hold up and if possible I'll wait for the EVA1 to be released before making a decision. In the end I plan to make a rational decision about the camera is best for my shooting style even if the company the company who makes it occasionally annoys me.
