The BIGGEST question of all....HVX200A

that would mean 128gb P2 cards may happen in 2006! Probably not until 2007, I would guess, but the potential at least exists!

And I will bet that single 1TB Hard disks for Internal storage will hit $400 at that point too, making it much easier to have 4 TB storage on a raid stripe inside a standard tower chassis. That will give maximum creativity and archiving capacity for people steadily shooting HD on a budget.

How about this ----> Could a 1GB USB2 Flash drive be used as a 3rd capture device for the HVX?

I'm guessing no, but I thought I’d ask!

You can't capture using USB, but you can download what you've already captured. If you're looking for the cheapest way to capture, I'd say just go with a firewire cable to your laptop. You've already got both of them, right?

Cool camera either way. I guess it's kind of silly, or even dumb, of me to ask now, but can SD footage be recorded to P2 as well? Or is it just HD?

to never have to purchase a real deck again will make the P2 revolution the only real revolution on the recording side if you ask me. (we may still have to go to a dupe house for the master to whatever tape stock needed) but with it being accepted at quite a few stations and networks there should be a day coming when you can just send use your smaller cards to use as masters and send those off to stations if you are in broadcast and they just send it back after offloading to their server for playback through the least expensive deck they own which is a P2 deck with massive storage and external opions. no tape shipping problems, or handling problems with weather or whatever, no worries about sending out for more tape at 35.00 each or more. of course i see the day soon when we who do broadcast stuff can just upload our finished programs and the stations will just download them to their master servers. tape will die just like it has in the audio industry. remember audio, because of smaller recording size has kind of always been a foreshadow for the video world. just some random thoughs on this stuff though, i could be wrong. food for discussion though.

Tape's days are most definitely numbered. With the HVX, if you're talking about mastering and delivering a high-def program, there's no need to send anybody a P2 card; the more likely workflow would be that you'd master to a broadcastable stream such as an MPEG-2 or MPEG-4 (DirecTV uses MPEG-4, don't they?) and deliver that. Well, that can be mastered and delivered on a 50-cent DVD-ROM, on your existing $60 DVD burner! Forget needing a $25,000 deck, forget $45 tapes and dupe houses and all that stuff. And yes, eventually you'll just upload the broadcast stream straight to their server.

Speaking of where to put the 8GB, well 16GB of footage you shoot....well where do I put it?

I am still saving for the HVX and I sure can't afford a big raid system, I don't want to go back to tape and loose my HD quality....so how do I archive my 720p HD?

Blu-ray or HD DVD discs....when will they be priced low enough that normal people can afford them?

MLCinema

Blu-ray is coming out 1st or 2nd quarter next year and will offer 50GB dual layer disks. I'm not sure of the starting price for the disks, but it should be less than buying a load of hard drives.

HDs are good, but they still have moving parts! I would like a backup device like Blu-ray which of course has no moving parts....I just hope the price is right!

The disks don't... but the burner most definitely does.

Blu-Ray or HD-DVD seem like the ideal achiving solution for HVX footage. Once it's on a disk, it stays there, ready to be accessed again at a later date.

Hard disks are just a good solution until Blu-Ray becomes widely available.

I have a feeling that in a few months there won't be any issues with archiving HVX footage at all.
