The BIGGEST question of all....HVX200A

Hello,

Ok, I am thinking of buying the HVX200, but I would buy it without the P2 cards for now. I want to wait until the cards grow in size (not physical :cheesy: more capacity) and it's expensive!

Now I'm thinking, if I buy the camera now and wait for the bigger cards will there be a HVX200A by the time the cards can hold more, say 32GB or 64GB?

And then I will have wasted my time shooting SD with my HVX200 waiting for the P2 cards to hold more

What to do....what to do!

Don't forget the FireStore -- you can be shooting with the HVX and recording full high-def without needing any P2 cards at all.

Will there be an HVX200A? Probably, if the DVX is any measure to judge by. The big question is when -- probably at least a year, probably more. There was a full year from the DVX100 to the DVX100A, and almost two years between the DVX100A and the DVX100B. So don't expect to see an HVX200A anytime soon, I'd guess it'd be late 2007, maybe 2008 before there's an HVX200A.

Regarding the idea of not getting any cards: I think that if you want to know how it's actually going to happen, I think those who get the HVX200 with no plans to get P2 cards are going to find themselves inexorably drawn to get at least one 2gb card, because the 2gb will be cheap enough that they can justify it... and from there, they'll be drawn into high-def and won't be able to go back! Once you start working with P2, you won't want to ever see a tape again. And once you start shooting DV50 and high-def, you'll probably not want to shoot on just DV. It'll be like potato chips -- you'll get just the one 2gb card, but just like potato chips, you won't be able to stop at just one!

Actually I think your right!

I was thinking about the Firestore as a cheap replacement for the P2, but I don't really like the idea of moving parts?! Any idea on the price for the Firestore?

I didn't know there would be a 2GB P2 card?

Amen!

I'm not looking back.

The firestore is an option that should be available next Spring.

Althought I plan on initially buying at least one 8GB P2 card, I do
plan on buying the firestore drive. My long term plan is going to
be strictly P2 when the storage medium increases and the price
is reasonable. It will happen! Man, I remember paying $600.00
for 16MB or RAM. I though I was king ****. LOL

For those who are concerned about the cash (we all are of course),
an 80GB firewire drive will be close to what the 8GB P2 card is currently
speculated to cost.

It sounds like the 8 GB card will be in the ballpark of less than 1K street value once this puppy is released. This is based on rumours I've been reading about on this site and dvinfo.net, but at less than 1K, I could afford that and just use the 8 giger for a year - I agree with everyone that Panny should lower p2 prices initially just to get it out there, I think a lot of ppl, including myself will be turned off from spending 1700 on one p2, but then again, thats msrp we're talking about...

And on a side note, I really hope Panny offers a few different packages to choose from,

HVX + one 4 GB card
HVX + two 4 GB cards
HVX + one 8 GB card
HVX + two 8 GB cards

and

HVX + nachos

I haven't heard that. Jan said <$1K for the 4GB (about $700). And possibly something somewhat less than $2K for the 8GB P2 by Xmas.

Nachos are not reccomended LOL. I've trashed a couple faders on my mixer eating Cheetos at the console. Fortunately, I was able to spray them clean..

This might stem form some info that was read on dvinfo.net.

As of yet, this info has not been substantiated.

Yea its just a rumor right now. But hot damn, I hope it is true... Actually, $700 doesn't seem that bad for a 4 GB card when I think about it, it's an assload of money but then again, no more tapes and hot hot hot HD

While there is always room for improvement in any model, I have to wonder whether there will be an HVX200A. When the DVX100 was released, nothing about it was novel except for the 24p capability. DV was already mature. But even though DVCProHD is relatively mature, the capabilities of the HVX at its price point and form factor are not. It's revolutionary, and there are potentially many more developments in the prosumer HD frontier (presented here in no particular order): more economical larger chips; better CMOS imagers; more economical lens interchangeability; better and cheaper prosumer HD lens designs and manufacturing; 10-bit sampling; better compression codecs; cheaper, higher-capacity storage. As designs are based increasingly on computer-industry components, the so-called IT approach will only accelerate the rate of improvements. This is a long-winded way of saying that I think the HVX200's successor probably may be so vastly improved that it won't much resemble the HVX and hence will be given a totally new designation.

I'm sure there will be an hvx200a a year or so after the launch. Look at it this way, you can always sell it months before the launch of the a model and purchase the new one whens its out. In those few months you wait, just rent an hvx in the meantime. Not really a big deal.
P.S. I'd love to see an all black hvx200a :cheesy:

Jesus Christo, we're already talking about the 200a and the 200 hasn't even been released yet. The evolution of the camcorder, all I hope is that Panasonic implements every change that they've implemented into the DVX100B so we are all up to par, after all is said in done, I don't think we'll be needing an 200a anytime soon, granted the 200 will blow the f--king roof off.

While it's true that new technology will lead to a significantly different camera in the future, the development cycle would probably take several years. This can be a long time in the IT world, so manufacturers often like to make some small improvements in the current model and introduce it as a mid-life kicker.

The price should be around $2,000 for the Firestore. Also, the 2GB P2 card isn't really a useful solution; its transfer rates are lower and if I'm not mistaken, its not even capable of recording HD material.

The 4GB cards will be well under $1,000 by the HVX launch and the street price of an 8GB card should be around $1,600. Like you, I'd rather shoot P2 than use a Firestore with moving parts, but some people may need the longer recording times. Don't forget, however, that if you use the Firestore, you lose all of your metadata and ability to search for clips on the LCD... which is half the point of shooting P2 in the first place. If you're just doing narrative work and don't require hour-long takes (like event work does), then I would still recommend going the P2 route over Firestore. Not to mention, the Firestore won't be available until months after the HVX launch (and my guess is you're probably going to want to be able to use your camera during that time). Just a hunch. :)

Sorry, I was responding to Barry Green's estimate for a 2007-2008 timeframe. I would expect that even within 2 years, developments would be significant. Before that time I would expect to see improvements mostly in storage costs and capacities.

The 2gb card can handle HD, it just has slower transfer rates. But, since it's only 2gb, the transfer rate question shouldn't be that big of an issue. If it was really, really cheap, the 2gb might be handy for those who just want to do some effects shots or something like that.

The 4gb card is already under $900, I expect it to be lower still by the time the camera comes out.

As to how the FireStore interacts -- I don't know that that's decided yet, is it? I mean, for all we know it may not even use the firewire port -- maybe it'll connect through the PCMCIA slot, in which case it may actually provide similar functionality? If it connects through the firewire port, then I suspect Haakon is correct, you'd lose all metadata and ability to play back clips etc. But if they approach it with the idea of making it as P2-like as possible, and make it connect through a card interface, I can't think of why it wouldn't function like a big P2 card...
