7D Tester13 and 7D

With all this talk of Tester 13 and the GH1 I was wondering if anyone new if something like this is possible or might happen in the future with the 7D. I know Trammel was trying to with the magic lantern hack but that kind of seems dead in the water right now. So i was wondering if there is a Tester13 out there working on the 7D.

It seems like an obvious thing to do, but I'm sure donations would help! If I knew for sure I was going to get a piece of firmware that unlocks the 7D in a similar way to the GH1, I'd definitely donate.

I would donate to Tester 13 for sure. If everyone on this board donate 20 bucks or so, that would easily buy him a 7D and 550D probably.

I suppose someone like Tester 13 would be the best candidate since he has a track record. Does anyone on the 7D side know him and has contact with him? If so, ask him.

would definitely donate at least 100 if he dedicated time to it. Well worth it if the final product is comparable to the GH1 hack

The Gh1 hack put a bandaid on a codec that was crippled by a number of factors by increasing the bitrate. It also removed artificial limitations like language, region, and artificially imposed timelimit on PAL cameras. It also solved things like the pulldown issue.

What are the problems with the 7D that you would like to see improved that are similar? A firmware update can't fix fundamental things like line-skipping and moiré, it can't give you an electronic viewfinder or an articulating LCD, and it can't solve overheating and the 12 minute limit. New interface elements haven't been added to the GH1.

What things do you think could be improved on the 7D?

Are you sure it cannot fix the Aliasing? The GH1 hack fixed the rolling shutter on that camera. I saw a clip of very fast panning and no rolling shutter after the firmware update. So it seems that Aliasing might be fixable if the rolling shutter can be.

The 7D does need not need much fixing. But this would be nice

1) No rolling shutter.
2) Aliasing in 720
3) Maybe a higher bit rate which might help the low light shots from breaking up
4) RAW - but that's probably just dreaming.

And yes, I would also gladly donate $100 to Tester13

Why? There's nothing wrong with the compression as is.

There WAS plenty wrong with the GH1 compression.

All of a sudden the 7D isn't adequate?

The only thing I could see improved would be the bitrate, unless there is a limitation by the internal memory that it records to first. If we could get higher bit rates, or perhaps 4:2:2 color subsampling, then we get better keying. But that's highly unlikely in my opinion.

I would think that what people would really want from the 7D are the kind of things that Magic Lantern added to the 5D: zebras, manual audio control, and audio level meters.

But those aren't the kind of things that Vitaliy is doing for the GH1, and presumably wouldn't be able to do for the 7D either.

this dslr forum feels like kindegarten sometimes because of threads like this ,"mom i want that tooooooo!!"

Why would you not try and improve it?
Is the 7D good as it is? Yes
but to sit here and not try I think would be
an extremely passive way to look at things.
So in the end why not?
What's the worst that happens? You can't
increase the bitrate? oh well im sure we will
know a lot more about the camera from doing so.

I understand that Magic Lantern has hacked this firmware
and opened it up but it seems to have been halted for
quite a while with the 7D and a fresh set of eyes could
be what it needs.

Amen Brockraum. That was well said. It is a great camera, but like everything it could be better.

Gh1 folks are claiming 80mbps. Is that possible? isn't the Gh1 default 17mbps. An increase like that would be incredible. In all honesty, it's a bit hard to tell what's really happening in all the Vimeo videos because they're so small.

Are the performance increases like that possible?

There's an entire subforum dedicated to the hack. If you're that interested you should go and research...

AVCHD is originally 17(ish) VBR. It's now far beyond that, but not 80.

MJPEG on the other hand IS topping out at 80 thanks to Michael Pappas' dedicated testing. And that's far beyond what either of the Canon's are doing... and that's just SDHC card and controller. It's not that hard to tell, even in a small vimeo box: the AVCHD is startlingly clear, and at 60+ inches of high def real estate looks the part.

It's a DIFFERENT look than the MJPEG and what comes out of the Canons, for sure. MJPEG looks more like, and so far a bit better than, Canon footage at high bitrates.

Manual audio is the only thing I want for the 7D for the times when I operate as a one-man-band. Already has everything I need besides that.

Ps. I just did a shoot all day yesterday with an Ikan 19" monitor with HDMI in, and it was a dream operating the 7D with that monitor all day. We also had a 5D and a T2i on set, and the 7D blows both out of the water when operating from an HD monitor.

I would like an HD option for Live Record with the T2i. Also since the t2i can use SDXC cards I would love for something really cool to be done with that added space.

Would love to by pass h.264 compression in favor of something else.

Overall though I'm really happy with the t2i, I just hate the moire that happens sometimes and the camera overheating.
