Technicolor Cinestyle preset for the 5D Mark II (for GH-x)?

Hello!

I've been looking at the Technicolor Cinestyle preset for the 5D Mark II. Not really understanding how these are made. Can someone replicate the curves for our GH cameras? Or is it more complicated?

Max

The curve is a grading corrective measure to balance the shot from the super-flat native-look, to a more finished contrasty appearance. I don't think the profile will be easily remade for other cameras... it is essentially just a flat or neutral picture profile that allows for more image control in post.

Good luck!

The technicolor profile is really cool but unfortunately we won't be seeing anything similar to for our gh cameras. the 5d for better or worse is leaps and bounds more popular and respected than the GH, that's the reason why technicolor made it. If the GH popularity exploded, we'd be seeing more of these goodies but unfortunately I don't see that happening .

The technicolor profile is a very useful tool and its also brilliant marketing. Well done Canon.

Maybe if Panasonic teamed up with Deluxe Laboratories we could get a name brand picture profile. They could even save some bucks and give us a generic supper flat profile without a name brand.

Hmmm maybe we should start asking them for that.

But surely couldn't you achieve an extremely good technicolor look by grading (and CCing) the footage in post. I've always figured that your raw footage should be as flat and consistent as possible so that the final aesthetic decisions are yours to make. I'm with bitcrusher, give us something really flat.

The whole point is to get the flat look and more importantly an accurate logarithmic curve in camera, before post, not to CC in post to achieve the flat. Log footage is actually quite ugly until you CC it.

Surely possible to push out some more range from these sensors. But even if you would squeeze an equal amount of pixels onto a m4/3 chip, it would still be smaller, it would still capture less light, it would still have less range. Picture profiles or not. Actually, i would assume that the Canons benefit even further with recording the video through upscaled resolution, thus giving more light between those pixels (even on the asp-c chips).

....4 or 14 stops though, don't forget the content... :2vrolijk_08:

This isn't about comparing the Canons to the GH-x's.. It's about getting the maximum amount of range from the camera we are using ...which here is the GH-X's.

Honestly...there's nothing spectacular about this Technicolor gimmick. Shoot flat and you're good. It's liken to a placebo effect if you ask me. This certainly doesn't convince me to go back to my 7D. They'd have to fix the other pressing issues of those cameras.

Actually, don't we just have the ability to lower saturation and contrast -2 or so? We don't have the ability to set a proper curve with soft highlight clipping like Canon's picture profiles?

Other than lowering the saturation and contrast we don't have the ability (like in the Canons) to apply a soft curve for soft highlight clipping. That's the one and only thing I miss about my Canon 7D.

We do have the ability to use different film modes, however, which all have radically differing gamma curves. I've heard before that Smooth with contrast -2 is the flattest available, but if someone could run some tests, that would be great. I'd love to run those tests, but I couldn't get to it until about 2 weeks from now.

Agreed.

Panasonic just doesn't seem to have any idea how to market this cam. Canon puts out these fantastic shorts made by respected film makers, Panny puts out "tourist filming water for 10 minutes". Hell, even Nikon's Chase Jarvis vid was head and shoulders above Panny's.

Doing something like partnering with a name brand for a profile is light years ahead of where they are at, unfortunately.

CinemaMode

CinemaMode

That's what CineGamma Mode(Cinema Mode) is in the GH2!

if you place all the settings to [-2,-2,-2,-2]

you get the exact same highlight curves in the GH2 footage.

Canon is playing catchup, come on people.

Also, the GH2 gives you Highlight clipping marks & Histogram during filming in addition to the Cinema Mode.

You dont have Highlight clipping marks and Histogram on the Canon's AT ALL!!!!!!!

Wake up and smell the marketing.

Panasonic Cinema color is already a "brand name" color profile as far as I am concerned. Well known in the industry for being excellent.

no longer true with the latest magic lantern firmware! i wish my GH1 could be hacked with half of the features that a T2i can now have.

Ah, yes, use hacks to fix a manufacturer's as delivered firmware lacks...

Some people may find hacks beneficial... I tend to not go for them... mileage may vary... but the point is, to compare GH2 as delivered, with a Canon product as delivered...
