Tapeless Methods

Hey,
I was looking on the web at tapeless methods I could use with my camcorder, I ran across Adobe OnLocation which takes care of metadata and obviously captures the video automatically therefore bypassing the long wait of capturing numerous MiniDV tapes. Now without thinking, I thought to myself, borrow a laptop and use my own external hard drive to capture the footage, but most laptops can't last nearly long enough for the time I'm going to need. I'm going to be recording all around at an event for 2 days. Can someone help me with a tapeless method?

i used to use the firestore fs4 instead of minidv tape, just plug it into the computer and copy the files over, or even edit them directly off of it, if you are feeling brave.

i think that it'll do three(?) hours of recording on the 40gig drive, but you can put in a bigger hard drive, and record for longer than that.

I was looking at prices, these babies go for a lot. Any other cheaper alternatives?

Get two laptops if you can borrow or rent them so that one can be charging while the other is in use. Assuming you can get a powered area, which I usually insist on.

Hi Mark,

You have to make the hard decision first,

The cheapest option is what i'm after
or
This, is the solution for for my needs.

then you can move forward. Firestore or Nnovia have on camera HDD solutions, but if they don't suit your budget, then look elsewhere from there.

I'm 18 still in highschool. If I worked full time maybe. But a grocery store salary working part time makes it hard for me to do this. :( Should I just stick to MiniDV tapes?

Based on everything posted here, I'd advise you to just use the tapes. Yes.

Double that. If you try to stuff around with alternatives that just arent 100%, your shots will suffer at the hand of your nerves due to the system just being a pain in the arse.

I believe most of us "old guys" began on Tape, a good point to start in this industry, You can even get some real nice S/hand tape gear very cheap.

Cheers and good luck.
