Re: .Tape stock choice

I remember reading somewhere on this forum that it is some coating put on the heads in the factory and that it should go away quickly within the first bit of use...

???

Guys, come on. I don't want to get snippy, but Panasonic MQ master-series tapes, the best tape made and the stock that is recommended for this camera, cost $5.75 each. Order them from this site's sponsor evsonline.com and you can get 'em for $5.75 each. How is that "very expensive"? It's cheaper than those crappy Maxell's in a 3-pack from Wal-Mart! Cheaper than the Panasonic consumer-grade tapes from Wal-Mart.

There really is simply no excuse to be using anything less than Panasonic MQ's in a $3400 camcorder.

Re: .Tape stock choice

I'm still a little confused. I shoot DVCAM in my DSR300 and MINIDV in my DVX100. Then I play both of them on my DSR25 deck. So what would be the best tape for me to use in my DVX100 since I will be mixing them in my DSR25?

Re: .Tape stock choice

I am in the same situation like Joe. Should we be using Sony tapes then since our playback machines are Sony Decks and our main camera is the SOny DSR300? I need to make a decision soon since my DVX100A should be arriving on Friday.

Thank you!

Re: .Tape stock choice

Nobody offered an answer so I'm going to use Sony MiniDV in my new DVX100a. (you will love yours by the way). I guess DVCAM 40min would be better but they are so overpriced.

Re: .Tape stock choice

I used dvxcam tapes in my DVX for the first 3 or 4 months... had more dropouts than I did with the MQ... I think the DVX just doesnt like wet based tapes.

Re: .Tape stock choice

So what is your recomendation? Considering the fact I must play DVCAM tapes in my deck?

Re: .Tape stock choice

I had been told my my salesman that Fuji is the maker of the Panasonic tape, they just put it in Pany packaging. I was also told that PQ and MQ is from the same tape stock, the difference is where it is taken from the master spool. One is taken from the outer part of the spool, and one is taken from the interior of the spool.......tension on the master spool is the difference in quality. Can anyone verify this?? I have been using the Fuji since camera acquisition, and no drop-outs yet.......knock on wood.

Re: .Tape stock choice

Since I experienced a similar problems (audio dropouts and playback picture degradation) during my first 50min shooting, can anyone tell me if PQ is dry lubricated or not since I already purchased a dozen?

Also, I just read that Panasonic puts some special coating on heads (in the fabric) and that this may be the cause of dropouts (which apparently dissapears by using a second tape), I am just wandering can you get rid of it by running the cleaning tape? (I just did and seems that problems dissapeared).

Thanks

Thanks

Re: .Tape stock choice

[glow=red,2,300][/glow] Now, I know I am a new user and all that, but it's funny how if I start or reply to a certain topic - it just becomes dead (only 1 reply)! >:( :-X

I will get to the point because I think it is also important for all DVX100 user out there and I haven't found ANYTHING regarding this ANYWHERE online.

I experienced a few audio dropouts and playback banding combined with "cylinder head dirty" sygnal and was a bit supprised because camera was new (30-40 min shot) and I was using a recommended AY-DVM63PQ Panasonic tapes.

After reading thru similar issues/causes on: www.adamwilt.com (thanks Adam) and trying to remember how I used/misused my camera, I figured that: THE "CYLINDER HEAD DIRTY" WARNING, AUDIO DROPOUTS AND PLAYBACK BANDING OCCURED ONLY AFTER MY BATTERY RUNNED DOWN (CAMERA TURNED OFF) IN THE MIDDLE OF SHOOTING (RECORDING)!
I remember that when I turned the camera back on and continued with shooting for about 5 minutes, it showed me that annoying "cylinder head dirty" sygnal for the first time.

Is it possible that: after the camera lost power in the middle of shooting, the cylinder head is left in contact with the tape but is not rotating (no power) so the debris from the tape is stuck to the head and needs to be cleaned???

Thanks,

Benjamin

Re: .Tape stock choice

Is there a loss in quality in recording over MQ tapes? In the type of filming I'm doing, often 20 mins of footage would be complete garbage that I know I wouldn't want to use. Is it not recommended that I just rewind and rerecord over?

Re: .Tape stock choice

if it works ok there would be no loss in quality, since its digital, and not analog, but its your own funeral for risking digital dropuots doing that for any critical shooting.

Re: .Tape stock choice

I've been using the Professional Quality Panasonic tapes and have never had a problem. Will it really hurt me using these tapes?

Re: .Tape stock choice

speters, I was also told by the company that i got my DVX from that the only difference between the PQ tapes and the MQ tapes is durability(due to tension) He said the MQ tapes are more ideal if you are going to be doing alot of rewinding and FForwarding, but neither one will hurt your camera. Would somone please put the nail in this discussion already! What's the dang difference?(wet, dry, tension) By the looks of thes posts, no camera behaves the same way. It seems everyone is saying different things, is there a site spicificaly stating the differences between Panasonic AY-DVM63PQ tapes and AY-DVM63PQ tapes. Thank you
