Re: .Tape stock choice

I love gay/brown/purple/white/red/straight people; I use gay as a play on the dictionary definition rather than the slang of orientation.

I also use words like **** and **** everyday, thats just the way I talk, and as I don't censor other people's vocabulary here, I expect members and non members to give me the same.

I created this forum so people with or interested in the DVX100 could come and talk to each other in a social environment without needing to worry about political restrictions or uptight moderators being assholes and watchdogs.

Oh, and you said you are a member in your rant, but you are logged in as a Guest, which isnt a problem, but I thought I would just let you know.

Jarred, can you elaborate on your "La Cie" solution? Is it portable? Does it have it's own powersource (batteries)? How much recording do you get? Compared to the Quickstream soln: which is more bang for the buck?

thanks

Re: .Tape stock choice

sorry.. I meant Citi Disk.. which is the same as the quickstream just without armour.

Re: .Tape stock choice

I have a bunch of standard, 60 minute Fuji tapes. Has anybody used them on the DVX, and if so, will I run into problems using them? I shot a film (with a different camera, mind you) last year, on those same tapes, and they were fine, but I was wondering if there would be any difference because of the DVX in particular.

Thanks,

Re: .Tape stock choice

I used Fuji tapes until recently where on a production they gave me 100 or so left over MQ's.. so I switched.

I never had any problems with the fuji tapes, just dont mix them with any other brands. Fuji still remains to be the highest scoring MiniDV spec manufacturer, and some stores around here only sell Fuji stock.

"I never had any problems with the fuji tapes, just dont mix them with any other brands."

That's good to hear! Now, you said that you switched brands after using Fuji for a long time...if you make the switch *once*, after having run a head cleaning tape through it, should everything be okay?
(I'm just wondering if I should eventually switch after my current project).

Thanks!

Re: .Tape stock choice

I did the head cleaner before the switch.. and the first MQ tape had a ton of droupouts, but after that I have had no problems.

Re: .Tape stock choice

jarred, you mentioned the citidisk...how does it compare to the quickstream? by the way, i just picked up my 2 drives today...can't wait to play w/ them...

Re: .Tape stock choice

where is the best place to get the mq tapes, did i miss it earlier?

Re: .Tape stock choice

some guy said he found a place that sold 100 for 3 bucks each.. most places though are around 5 bucks.

Re: .Tape stock choice

If I remember the old days of Betacam, I alaways fast-forward and rewind tapes at first use.

Re: .Tape stock choice

So who is a reputable tape dealer, i need to get about 10 or so tapes for a client.

Re: .Tape stock choice

I'm happy to see this thread as I've just gone through the painful experience of having a camera melt down after using TDK's. I sent the camera in for warranty work and all it needed was a good cleaning. I have a few questions:

1) I just bought the MQ tapes, but out of emergency, I had to use one TDK before I expelled these nasty things from my life. I didn't think it would be a problem as I had shot about fifty hours of TDK's previously before I had a problem with the camera...I see now from the threads that I was mistaken. What should I do to prevent any problems before I shoot on the MQ's?

2)Who is the dealer that's selling the MQ tapes for $3 at 100 bulk?
The cheapest I've found is $5.25 for 100.

3)Regarding flaking with my old tapes, is there some sort of time frame in which this happens? Should I convert all my old footage to MQ tapes to ensure they don't flake?

Thanks

Re: .Tape stock choice

Hello folks,
I just got my dvx100a last night and i'm eager to start testing it out. All this talk about tape stock has me worried about my camera's playhead. I have a bunch of Sony DVM60PRQ tapes that I plan to use soon. I have no idea if they are "Wet" tapes or "Dry" tapes. I've been using the same tape stock for the past 3 years on my Canon GL1 with no problems.
Anyways - where can I find the best deals on MQ tape stock for the Panasonic DVX100a? Is there a website where they sell MQ tapes for cheap?

Thanks!

Re: .Tape stock choice

What is the best deal out there on the Master Quality (AY-DVM63MQ) tapes for the AG-DVX100? Any chance we could get a membership group buy going to help fund DVXUSER.com? I'd kick in a few bucks to help support the website if we could find a wholesale deal on tape stock.

Re: .Tape stock choice

I do have a wholesaler to get us great deals, but you gotta buy 50 of them at a time so I didnt think it was very realistic.

Re: .Tape stock choice

Hey Jarred,

I'll be buying 100+ MQ tapes soon. Who's your wholesaler? If the price is really good, I'd be glad to give him/her some business!

Thanks....

Re: .Tape stock choice

As an owner of several cameras and decks, I too recommend sticking (excuse the pun) with one brand of tape/formulation. As a user of Sony equipment, I had always used Sony tape in both my cams and my Panasonic DV2000 deck. A couple of years ago, I bought a Panasonic DVC200 cam and decided I would start using the then brand new MQ series tapes in it. Well the first 3 tapes used in this cam (276MQ) all had dropouts like crazy. After evaluating the situation, I realized my deck was not at all happy with me mixing Sony Wet and Panasonic Dry tapes. So I immediately ran a cleaning tape through my DVC200 and switched to Sony DVCAM tape stock (even though this cam only records in DV mode). I have had nearly 2 years of good luck since.

Moral of story: Don't forget about your decks. If you use one brand of tape in other cams, it's probably best to use the same in your new DVX100...

Personally, I buy all my tape stock from TapeResources.com

Re: .Tape stock choice

>:(
Just used my first tape in my DVX100A and guess what - yes, serious drop outs all over. OK, I used a Fuji-tape and not a very expensive Panasonic tape, but since I read earlier in this thread about users who hadn't experienced any problems with Fuji I thought it would work.
It seems a bit strange that the heads are clogged up after not even one hour of shooting!!
I don't really want to go straight to the cleaning tape rutine ( because of the head wear issue ) and think I've read something about people who just tried to run a second tape through the DVX ( without using cleaning tape ) and actually gotten rid of drop outs.
Useful hints anyone?
Thanx!
