Talk Me In To Buying a C100

Thanks Philip.

Why would Canon make a camera that's able to be used so discreetly, then not include built-in mics. Sure quality would be lacking, but at least you could record sound.

I shoot with a GH2 here in Guatemala. If I pull out my camera on the street or on a bus, I want as low a profile as possible. Having camera that doesn't look like it takes video can be a big plus.

That said, thanks for the feedback Gary.

You can easily throw a small DSLR microphone on the hot shoe of the camera, if needed. A Rode VideoMic or Sennheiser MKE-400 are still fairly small, and will connect to the 3.5mm jack on the camera.

I'm not saying this will give you great audio, but if you have to have on-camera audio…

Does the OP have the lenses needed for the C100? Because getting some good "L" glass is a much better investment than the C100 body, and will have a better impact on the quality of your video.

Thanks Stephen. Apart from this small gripe it sounds like the camera I've been waiting for.

Is anyone actually having problems with this though? I never had any issue when I shot with my HPX-170. I mean, it's not like an Arri Alexa or anything. The only difference with having a "low profile" camera has only meant that people pose for me when I'm shooting video because they think I'm taking a picture.

Gary - for me it can be beneficial looking like a tourist and not drawing too much attention. Here in Central America an HPX-170 looks pretty flash, and would be worth 2x what many people earn over a year. Pretty tempting to try to steal it - high reward for the risk.

I'm renting the camera next week for seven days. I have two shoots on Wednesday and Thursday and the camera will be here on Monday. This gives me some testing time before and after. Looking forward to giving it a go.

Thanks Philip.

An onboard mic would pick up on the internal fan noise and be mostly useless anyway. Its not like a DSLR that has only passive cooling.

There is an option to put the fan in automatic mode, which keeps it off unless the camera starts overheating. So you can definitely run silently in many circumstances.

You can still add a small mic like the RODE video mic pro as the camera has a mic input.

does the side grip "rotate" positions like the grip on the sony EX1 or is it a fixed position like i see in their promo photos?

thanks

The side grip can be rotated, but you have to unscrew where the base of the grip connects to the camera body to rotate it.
