GH4 Taking the GH4 to the next level…………….10bit 422 with A Ninja Assassin

Nice! That was the only important feature tipping in Atomos favor.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't the Ninja Assassin do 1080p 10bit at up to 120fps? That would make the GH4 slo-motion look kinda awesome! If that is true, the scales have tipped back to the Assassin for me...

Vfr modes on gh4 is only good up to 60fps. Vfr rates from 72 to 96 will give you resolution worse than 720p. I dont think the assasin can improve it by much.

Yes, the Assassin can do 1080p at 120fps, but the GH4 can't output 120fps.

I did shoot at 96 with the GH4 (and Sigma 18-35) and I was quite surprise by the result.

Does the video device Pix-E5 allows the lut to pass through to an external monitor?

I started out thinking that the Atomos Shogun/Assassin 4K Recorders would be the way to go, but then came along the Video Devices PIX-E5 and I really like the smaller form factor and build quality. So far there aren’t many reviews out on the PIX-E5 but this is a link to one, https://www.cinema5d.com/video-devices-pix-e5-review/ and the author had this comment.

“Operating the PIX-E5 is easy and intuitive, so that’s another big plus. The only thing to criticize here is that some of the overlays appear pixelated and have a stuttering motion to them, which makes the whole experience less smooth.”

Hopefully this will be solved with firmware, when it is this might be a better fit for our GH4-4K cameras. Let’s face it, 10 bit 422 is taking the GH4 to the next level.

The disadvantage of the PIX-E5 and the assasin that it does not support anamorphic desqueeze. Which is the main reason I would use a monitor(besides recording 10bit prores). So for me so far the cheapest is the shogun.

Having used the Odyssey and the PIX-E5H, it seems to me that the Odyssey has more computing hardware inside it (as, frankly, it should, at twice the price). The waveform monitor and vectorscope are breathtakingly gorgeous on the Odyssey. On the PIX-E, they're functional, but they don't respond as quickly as the Odyssey does. They're not as pristinely detailed as the Odyssey's. They work and they do the job, but it looks like the Odyssey has more to work with.

There is a lot more difference between those two products; I mean, one's a 5" monitor at $1100-ish that uses two batteries and one drive, the other's a 7" monitor at $2300 that uses one battery and two drives. One has only an HDMI in and HDMI out, the other has multiple SDIs in and out, plus HDMI in/out, and timecode in/out. One seems to be about 3x larger than the other; I'll have to actually measure them to know the size difference for sure.

I don't know if the PIX-E could be updated to have a quicker, higher-res waveform or vectorscope. I do know that that wouldn't slow me down half a second in buying one, as -- while the Odyssey's are certainly better, the PIX-E's are certainly usable.

Hopefully this will be solved with firmware, when it is this might be a better fit for our GH4-4K cameras. Let’s face it, 10 bit 422 is taking the GH4 to the next level.[/QUOTE]

FWIW -

Atomos Assassin and Shogun are 196 x 110 x 47 mm, Shogun is 460 grams (645 with batteries and HDD)

Q7+ - 200 x 155 x 25, 560 grams.

PIX E-5 -- 137 x 86 x 41, 454 grams.

And, since I don't have either the measuring tape or scales - to say nothing of the recorders in question - this is off B&H's official specs.

I went with the Odyssey. It was more money - but it came with 2x256Gb cards - and it's built like a tank. The monitor is so accurate and the scopes so well done - I also use it with my editing system. Nothing like a monitor that can do triple duty.

Another thing to consider is sound- the Assasin is just 3.5mm I believe, the Shogun has XLR via breakout cables, and the Pix-E has 3.5mm but has an optional $300 XLR module. So really, with recording sound, the Pix-E5 with SDI is about the same price as the Shogun, since the Shogun's price came down. The Sound Devices module supposedly will sound the best though.

I wrote Video Devices/Sound Devices about a problem noted in an early review of their PIX E5 and am waiting for confirmation that the problem has been solved. The reviewer described the problem this way. That some of the overlays appear pixelated and have a stuttering motion to them. If I get confirmation that the problem is solved I’ll post it.

I believe it does. I asked this the other day at a presentation for it :)

Note though, the HDMI output and SDI output are limited to 1080p - it's not a direct 4K passthrough.

HTH.

Cheers,

Paul :)
