T4i- affordable Digic 5 DSLR?

The G series cams have never had even second tier video capability. The G9 only had 640x480 video. I don't think we can even begin to judge the future of Canon's direction off this one camera.

On the flip side of the coin, I went to a C300 hands on presentation today. Pretty incredible IQ on the big screen. The top guy Tim Smith said something I found incredible. That the future is cinema cams and not DSLR's. Everyone in the room snickered, but upon further thought, it may have been a very telling statement. It appears that one of the higher ups in the EOS Cinema arena believes DSLR video is on the way out for Canon. Just my take when reading between the lines at their premiere product introduction today.

Cheers,
Pete

Perhaps that is the way Canon is, indeed going. If so, all the more reason to go invest in m4/3rds gear. :)

I think you're reading too much into this G1X thing

I just posted it here because it proves that digic 5 is not enough to get clean images

my theory is that it all boils down to how fast the sensor is: if read-out time is 30ms or less, you can read it all and downsample; if it's above that, you have to read only some lines, and aliasing/moire will appear; small sensors seem to be faster in general; on big sensors (m43 and above) you need to design it with read-out speed in mind, otherwise they're slow

the next generation of canon APS-C sensors could go either way - if it keeps the line-skipping, I'll be switching to Sony (or Nikon?)

I'm sorry, but that's a proof: if digic 5 was enough for clean images, G1X would have them; if it has digic 5 and still images are not clean, it means something else is needed; what I can't say, and there are many theories possible here, is what that missing bit is (faster read-out sensor, canon not purposedly crippling the camera, whatever)

See my previous explanation. The code driving the Digic chip is not necessarily the same on P/S cameras as it is on DSLRs. All are valid theories at this point.
