T2i the right choice?

Hi,

I currently use an XH-A1 as my primary camera. This works for most events ( Commercials Weddings, Concerts ect..) however in most situations, I am forced to borrow or rent other cameras like the hvx for different angles. I now have some money saved up and thinking about the t2i.

At first, I was thinking about the Vixia S20 but after seeing the footage the t2i displayed, I thought it would be a much smarter purchase.

The main thing I'm worried about is the lens. I know I'm going to need a faster lens that would allow to zoom in enough and let enough light in. Does anyone have any Idea what lens i could get? I don't want to spend more than $300 on that.

Also what are some other disadvantages of the camera.

I really want to buy it, but if it's going to be to difficult to use. I may have to consider the S20 again.

Thanks

Lens: a used Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8 (~$350).

Some disadvantages: 4GB file limit (~12min footage). some reports of overheating (for long recordings). focusing for a live event might be an issue with the camera unattended on a tripod and wide-open aperture.

if you've ever used an DSLR, it's pretty easy to use.

yeah it wasn't the VC version. i either saw it here, ebay, or http://photography-on-the.net/forum/ market place. $350 is the lowest i've seen it (used). there's this guy out of hong kong that's selling a new canon mount for $380 he's got 100% feedback, though YMMV.

edit: there's one on POTN for $325 (you can't access the market place unless you have so many posts(

I'm in a very similar position... I had the Panasonic HMC150 as my primary and only camera. And the HMC150 is a great camera. I love mine, especially after I got a DoF adapter for it... but I really needed a second camera.

I was thinking about a 7D, but didn't know if I'd like shooting on DSLR. After watching the review from orange comparing the 7D and T2i, I decided to spring for the T2i (and because I great deal on one), just to see if I like it.

Well, jury is in... I LOVE it! Totally different animal from my HMC150. And it won't replace my primary camera, but it's a really nice compliment to my primary camera.

So... long story short, I received the camera last Monday and after playing around with it for two days, shot a commercial with it on Wednesday as my 2nd camera with my nikon lenses.

It far exceeded my expectations, even with a few operator errors (not visible to client, as I had those kind of errors ironed out before doing the shoot) I had getting used to the new camera still.

It was simple to match the cameras too using magic bullet.

Take a look and call out which shots are HMC150 and which are T2i (that sounds like a drinking game).

There's a couple of accessories that I sorely need. A viewfinder is one. A follow focus is another (my Dfocus got stolen recently! So, now I have to replace it. ARGH!).

But this camera is really a solid shooter. It's not ready for A cam... really... I mean, I do a lot of documentaries right now and the 12 min limit doesn't work for that... and neither does the lack of sound support the camera has. But as a B cam for me, BEAUTIFUL!

You should check out the thread about vintage lenes. If you are on a tight lens budget, $300 will not buy you much in the way of new glass, but if you buy vintage glass, you can get some really nice lenses with your $300 budget.

You can get a 70-210 f/3.5 for $50-100, add about $15-20 for an adapter. Need some fast glass? How about a 50mm f/1.4 for $50-100. I have chosen the vitage lens route and have several lenses and saved thousands of dollars over new glass.

Interested? Here's the link to the post here on DVXUser.

Cuz the quality looks the same as may A1...

I think it looks a little more grainy too...

i hope you do not mean the canon xh a1, because the GH1 footage is MUCH clearer than my XH A1 cams, and the GH13 hack makes them much more tempting.

right now for DSLR's i would rank, for general use...

GH1-by a generous margin.
5DMkII
7D
T2i
Olympus PEN EP-1/EP-2 etc
Sony NEX-3/5
D300s
D90

I wouldnt even bother with anything by Nikon out at the moment.

Hi,

thinking about the t2i.

Great camera for the money. I'm looking forward to adding a 5D next.

Does overheat if you leave it on too long. I have no personal experience with the GH1 but they don't seen to overheat if that will be an issue for you.

The Tamron 17-50 2.8 non VC may be the closest to your budget and pretty sharp. the VC version is soft wide open at 50mm.

You will NOT be able to zoom during the shot however. I personally never do but there are some here on the forum who zoom while shooting. Any of these still lenses will not be able to zoom smoothly so keep that in mind.

The zooming would just be to get closer when I the Videographer can not. Not tackily moving in and out.
