T2i - no HDMI out during take?

the t2i can not monitor in HD while recording. Via HDMI once i hit record, my marshall flashes blue, than shows the input source change to 480 and its a streched SD image, just like the 5D. I have a 7D and it does not do that, when i hit record on the 7D the image stays the same and all that happens is the red dot pop ups.

Which Canon camera does HD output during recording?

NONE!!!

They all output SD over HDMI during recording

Not directed at you at all, just in response to Vince's frustration at seeing me post the same stock answer YET AGAIN.

Thing is, these cameras are fanning incredible interest among many people so we're seeing lots and lots of new users coming on board, and they are asking some very simple/new-user questions. So there are some simple concepts that it would help if we could get established right at the beginning, and one of them is that you can't expect a less-expensive product to do everything as well as a more-expensive product does.

Understood. Maybe the poster was right, a stickied 'READ ME FIRST - FAQ' type post may make the forum more valuable, not clogging it up with the same questions hundreds of times.

This conflicts with the reports I have heard. Many sources have said that the 7D is not quite HD out via HDMI (or even in camera, but we won't go there), but higher than SD.

Just a general question, but how does the improved resolution on the T2i's LCD weigh in on this entire "no HD during playback" debate? I always thought the 7D was 'just ok' for getting focus, and with the LCD being better on the T2i, this might make the focusing issues a little friendlier. Although there are obviously other reasons you want HD during playback than just focus.

I have not used HDMI monitoring....but if it's anything like what it looks like during USB connection...then you are right...it does not change when you hit record. Matter of fact I've recorded over USB many times and what comes out is a picture bigger than SD but not quite 1080. It seems slightly larger than 720p.

The point is.....it does not drop in resolution at all during recording. I believe there is a thread from many months back talking about its exact size. Trammel Hudson talked about exploiting that...when he is able to hack it.

what i've heard is that when recording the 7D does 800 lines of resolution. this would make sense as to why when on my 800 lines of resolution marshall monitor, the input does not change

it's talked about in this video:

I'm wondering if you could add Magic Lantern's firmware to T2i like the 5d to output 1080i? Guessing they would have the same program just disabling certain parameters within each camera.

Almost as happy as I am to have someone ask the question "why doesn't my $800 product do everything someone else's $1700 product does" for the 10,000th time.

This is incorrect. 7D outputs a HD signal during recording. However the image is slightly scaled down from FullHD resolution to 1620x910. The online / vfx facility 'Syndicate' here in Sweden has built a whole workflow around this capturing that output with a Matrox MXO2 Mini.

with a app to improve the colour resolution that they sell.

However the green-purple moire artifacts from the camera's rescaling method remains in the image even with this process.

this is what I get on my 30" monitor when I record out the HDMI on my 7D....

On DVInfo they were saying that yes there is monitoring, but only in standard-def. The HDMI port was said to be 1080i during non-recording, but when going into record mode it blanks out the screen for a second or two and then comes back on, but in a reduced-res 480p version.

I don't know, haven't used one, but that's what I read on DVInfo from Kaku Ito.

480p is considered an "HD monitor" yes? Enough to pull focus on a T2i I would assume.

I just got my Mini-HDMI cable today and tested this out on the T2i. For playback, it's great, looks like it plays back in full 1080, 16:9.

However in recording mode, before I've hit record, the image looks like it might be 1080, but on my monitor its shown at 4:3. When I hit record, the monitor goes blank, the record light flashes 2 times and shuts off. Nothing is recorded! I can not record with the HDMI cable plugged in. Really lame. Not sure what's going on.

Well my monitor is an Acer 23" and I just read a post at dvinfo.net where someone said there's an issue with that particular monitor. Weird.

Confirmed. I just tested my friends T2I - connected it to my LCD (PC) monitor via HDMI, and my monitor kept flashing black, then blue when I hit record (doesn't do this with 7D). I can only assume that it's doing this because it doesn't support the low resolution output of T2I (when recording). So under that assumption, I connected it to my SmallHD monitor - it worked, but at a very low resolution.

What happens if you're sending out of the composite video connection?
Does anything change then when you hit record?

Just got my Lilliput 7" and mini-HDMI cable. Hooked them up to my T2i while shooting 1080/24p.

Ugh. I knew it would be lower resolution than the LCD screen, but I wasn't anticipating aspect ratio problems.

When the Lilliput is in HDMI input mode, and there's camera setting info on the screen (ISO, aperture, etc.) the image appears to be squeezed into a 4x3 size. When I hit the T2i's Display button until the camera settings disappear, leaving only the video on screen, the image appears stretched horizontally on the Lilliput. Whether I display the settings info or not, when I press record in HDMI input mode, the screen goes black for a couple of seconds and reappears stretched horizontally.

When I switch to DVI input mode on the Lilliput, the image also appears stretched horizontally. It appears this way whether the camera settings are on screen or not. The difference is that the screen doesn't go black when I hit record (and there's no sound on playback).

Also, the video appears stretched horizontally on playback whether the Lilliput is in HDMI or DVI input mode. To me, DVI input mode appears to be the lesser of two evils. And, in case anyone's wondering, the image is stretched horizontally when running composite out to the monitor, and the image is not as sharp.

I would have been fine with lower resolution monitoring on the T2i, but dealing with a squeezed or a stretched image is a real bummer.

EDIT: The above was with the Lilliput set to 16x9 mode. When I switched it to 4x3, using DVI input mode (still using HDMI cable), I was able to get the correct aspect ratio while composing, recording, and playing the footage back, with no delay after hitting record. Unfortunately, there's an inch on both sides of the screen that's unused. However, this appears to be the best option with the T2i and possibly the 7D.

480p is still pretty good. I have an 8" HDMI 800x480 monitor and it was good enough for the 5D...stuff was never out of focus...Z-Finder not so much.

Any of you tried the eos utility yet? You get a very useable sd picture that will just about fill your laptop screen, which stays the same resolution and size when you record WITHOUT robbing the lcd on the camera as well. Enough res for critical focus, I would say.
