FEATURE: Survival - The Feature, based on our Timefest Entry...

What about backing away from the investor route and trying to take a crowd source route? Obviously you won't raise the same level of money that way, but well-organized feature projects raise $50K or so all the time on the sites now. Sure, you'd have to scale back and probably lose any names you were hoping to attach to the project, but you get back in control.

We can't really do that right now. It is a great way to get funding, and we had considered it at one point, but really we have too many obligations for that to be a viable path anymore. We are still in control creatively, which is what is most important to us. We are not in control of the production timeline, at least not until we have locked in our investors. But the benefits of this approach were weighed against the benefits of doing it on our own, and as a group we decided to try it out. If we completely fail. at least we still own the movie and we can try again with crowd sourcing, smaller budget, etc. That's the worst-case-scenario/back-up plan.

Good news: The film brief will be available for wide release to potential investors starting tomorrow. Our ducks are now officially in a row (legal has given the okay).

Now we just sit back and wait for the money to roll in :-Laugh(DBG):

Anyone interested in investing (or if you know a likely candidate, we are offering a small finder's fee)? PM me for a copy of the Film Brief.

We are seeking investments between $15,000 and the full $3M.

I'd highly recommend you run the "finder fee" idea through your legal team, and if you don't have one, consult with an entertainment attorney who specializes in film funding. Offering finder fees is illegal under most circumstances and opens up the the production company to litigation from investors should they ever grow unhappy with how your spending their money. Sure, lots of people do it, but that doesn't make it legal or the right way to do things.

Well, that's what was holding us up for so long, that is, the legal team going over everything with a fine-toothed comb.

I'm pretty sure if it was illegal in Nevada, they would have mentioned it. Finder's fees in Real Estate can be illegal when given to a non-licensed realtor, but I don't think that applies to any/every other business, and the laws vary from state to state.

According to the ever trustworthy Wikipedia:

In the United States, a finder's fee is the compensation given to an intermediary in a business transaction. Usually, there is a causal relationship between the one party and the intermediary (the finder), another relationship between the finder and the second party, and the two parties of the transaction would not have met if it weren't for the work of the finder. Such compensation is common in business and is regulated by contractual agreements and law in the United States. A finder's fee can also be a gift from one party of the transaction, who feel morally obligated that the profits of the transaction be shared with the finder for making that transaction possible.

Thanks for lookin' out for us, though

One of our previous investor contacts has led to an interesting opportunity. We have to put Survival on hold for a maximum of three weeks or so in order to take advantage of it, however it could make raising the funds for Survival as simple as such things are capable of being...

Just sent out the six treatments we've been working on :) They will be reviewed by a fairly prestigious agency, that for now will remain unnamed. If they approve, there is funding in place to go forward with a very influential producing team behind it. They liked Survival a lot (which is why they asked us to submit), however it was the wrong genre for the project they had in mind. This could be cool!

If they go forward with us, it will make the funding for Survival happen pretty much instantaneously. We'll keep you posted.
