GH4 Surprise for GH4 owners

The DVX100 had a certain "mojo" to it.

...It was one of the first ENG prosumer cameras that could shoot 23.97 progressive (24p), which was a really big deal at the time.

I think we've all become jaded by having so many great low cost options available today, that it's hard to impress anybody.

Hahahahahahahaha......

Sorry, but this is all just too funny.

That said, I did hear a rumor that there will be a BIG announcement by Panasonic next year at NAB relating to video. Stay tuned!

someday soon, people will no longer care about looking at 100 year old technology versions of film making, climb free of that rut, and enjoy newer, more detailed motion pictures.

Sorry I disagree. While it looks good, it doesn't render motion like an Alexa or like 8mm, 16mm or 35mm film. It lacks that suspension of disblief that I'm still convinced has to do with the way that subject motion is rendered in the frame. Now I admit I coud totally be wrong about motion being the key factor, but I have yet to see DSLR/mirrorless video that captures that same characteristic no matter how the image is reframed for 2.4:1 or color graded or slid slowly on a dolly/slider.

Edge details and sharpness. This is a huge killer to 24p cadence. Film has no such thing as sharpness or edge enhancement. In order for motion blur between frames to be believable you have to minimize the edge detail. Lower sharpness as much as possible. Yes you get a softer overall image but it is more natural. That is also the advantage of shooting 4k. Other RAW cameras tend to shoot, well RAW which has no sharpness or edge enhancement added and thats why their motion can look a bit smoother. Forget about sharpened detail, shoot 4k and enhance in post or keep it natural looking.

Also, look at the concept of "penumbral sweep" that Adam Wilt describes in this article. Basically, it's the fade-in/fade-out effect that you get in each frame of film that is shot with a mechanical spinning shutter: http://provideocoalition.com/awilt/story/cine_gear_expo_la_2011/

Haha. The definition of rumor: a rumor reflects what one perceives as a desire, want or need that one does not currently possess. A rumor often ends in a great let down, followed by anger or disillusionment and a sense of dashed hopes and dreams. There are no known cures for these symptoms of rumors.

You were the closest to the actual announcement. "Instagram photo styles" :D

Maybe I should, meantime where's your GH4 internal raw?

Maybe reading my other posting here would have told you that I thought there would be some enhancement and bugfixes but that I doubted the RAW rumor and hoped for somehting else - like 4K 50 fps. I happen to believe that only seldom a formula one engine gets packed into a middle class coupe and especially not by the original manufacturer..... :-)

And: Rumors are rumors. Apart from that, Panasonic proved to stick to their rather conservative upgrade history.

A little hint (or not?) that there will be another firmware announcement some time after Photokina now regarding video is the fact that there was no mention of fixing that audio latency bug. Of course they could just keep quiet and talk about features not bug fixes, but it's nice to still hope for something bigger ;)

Raw images could be taken from footage that would be recorded in some sort of raw motion codec (not taking raw images one by one like for example in timelapse mode). Highly unlikely but one can dream... :)
